| Posted: 18 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT The fourth episode of Top Gear 17 just aired and there seems to be a little confusion as to what these guys think a good episode constitutes. There were only a couple of notable segments for the episode, highlighted by a track review of both the new Jaguar XKR-S and the Nissan GT-R as well as an entertaining interview with British comedian, Rowan Atkinson, followed by one of the best laps a celebrity has had on-board the Reasonably-Priced Car. The whole episode, however, was dominated by a rather confusing challenge between Jeremy Clarkson against James May and Richard Hammond on who could build the better automotive-pulled train. It sounds weird just thinking about it and trust us, it gets a whole lot weirder once you watch the segment. We love these guys to bits, but for all their great segments, they’re bound to have one or two that just aren’t as entertaining as we hoped. What makes it even worse was that they decided to allot a significant chunk of this week’s episode on a forgettable challenge. Check out full details of Top Gear Season 17 Episode 4 after the jump. | Video: Jay Leno reviews the Bugatti Veyron SuperSport Posted: 18 Jul 2011 08:00 AM PDT It was only a matter of time before the blue-jeaned wonder that is Jay Leno would get the chance to drive the fastest production car on the planet. Frankly, we’re surprised it took him so long to get a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport into his famous garage, but considering this is a special Veyron, donned in an exposed blue carbon fiber, it was probably worth the wait. For Leno, of course. Short reminder: The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is powered by a 16-cylinder engine with four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercoolers that have been used to boost the power to a total of 1200 HP. Just after its official launch, the car was entered into the Guinness Book of Records with an average top speed of 431 km/h (267 mph), making it the fastest car in the world. Make sure you check out the video to see what Leno thinks of the Bugatti Veyron SuperSport. Pay special attention to the end, where Leno drives the vehicle to determine if it is really worth the crazy price tag it comes with. | Ferrari testing new hybrid technology Posted: 18 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT Ever since the Vettura Laboratorio HY-KERS made its grand debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, we’ve been waiting for a solid piece of machinery that would solidify the hybrid technology’s existence in Ferrari’s future models. Ferrari hasn’t exactly been keeping the notion of highlighting hybrid technology in their models a secret, but details for such vehicles haven’t exactly been forthcoming either. Tough luck, Ferrari, because spy photographers have captured what looks to be hybrid prototype testing. This prototype just so happened to be wearing an "S" on its plates which means the car is registered in Stuttgart. This may mean nothing to some, but to us it confirms the involvement of German supply giant, Bosch, who just so happen to be helping Ferrari with the engineering and software set-up of the hybrid. The prototype is also sporting a special exhaust system with two pairs of side by side pipes which may be the biggest hint towards a hybrid powertrain. So far, Ferrari has been able to keep the details of the hybrid powertrain a secret, but rumors suggest that it will consist of a standard engine with two electric motors, one at the front wheels and one at the rear, each developing around 100 HP. As for the vehicle debuting this new powertrain, that’s still being kept under wraps. The prototype caught testing had body panels illustrating a 599 GTO, but underneath those sheets of metal looked to be a Ferrari California. The vehicle spotted also featured the California’s headlamps, wheels, chromed wheel nuts, folding metal roof shutlines, brake caliper position, and distinctive instrument binnacle. | Posted: 14 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT The battle for the title of "World’s Fastest Production car" has just heated up – again. And this time its round two of the classic David vs. Goliath encounter: diminutive Shelby Super Cars taking on the might of VW-owned Bugatti. American one man show SSC, forced the world to take them seriously after the original Ultimate Aero snatched the title away from the Veyron with a run of 256mph, recorded on a four-mile-long Texas single carriageway that featured a dogleg bend that needed to be navigated at "just" 210mph. The man at the wheel was 71 year old Chuck Bigelow who had no racing experience and refused to wear even a crash helmet. Hitting back, the Veyron Super Sport took to VW's ultra-modern, ultra-smooth and wide Ehra Lessien test track, with a pro driver at the wheel and crowd of engineers at their beck and call. The result was an impressive 267mph from the 1200HP special edition. Considering all that Bugatti have at their disposal compared to Jerod Shelby and his band of 16 engineers – that work from a garage behind his house – you begin to realize the magnitude of their accomplishments. Now they have unveiled their new creation, a 1350HP RWD beast that's yet to be officially named. For convenience, we'll just call it the Aero II. UPDATE 07/18/2011: SSC has confirmed that their future supercar will be called "Tuatara" - a name that comes from the Maori language and means ’peaks on the back’. The tuatara is a reptile endemic to New Zealand that has the fastest evolving molecular structure of any animal and the fastest evolving DNA on the planet. The company has also unveiled a first presentation video of the supercar, so enjoy! Full story after the jump. SSC Tuatara originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 14 July 2011 09:00 EST. |
| Bugatti Veyron "Chrome Red" by Dartz Posted: 18 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT Somewhere in Latvia, the minds over at Dartz are probably hunkered down in their shops looking for new ways to come out with some of the world’s most eccentric works. Regarded as an aftermarket tuning company that has produced some off-the-wall projects, including the Prombron Nagel and the Iron Diamond, Dartz is back at it with a new program specifically for one of the world’s fastest cars, the Bugatti Veyron. Without proper regard for fine taste and clear aesthetics, Dartz went out and turned this Veyron into a screaming chrome red fireball that immediately draws attention to itself, as if the Veyron doesn’t already do that on its own. We’ve seen a lot of re-styled paint finishes on the Veyron before - some gaudier than others - but never have we seen something shine in bloodshot red before. The mere fact that it comes with a quad-turbocharged W16 engine that dispenses 1,001 horsepower and a top speed of 260 mph seems to sit a little farther at the back of our minds at this point. Check out the video of the "Chrome Red" Veyron by Dartz and tell us if that screams attention just by the mere sight of it. | Video: Chevrolet Racing "Track to Street" Season 2, Episode 6 Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT
Just because we think that it would be cool to be part of a professional racing team, it doesn’t mean that we’re all cut out for the job. Lost in the attention of the glory given to the professional drivers of the Corvette racing team, a group of dedicated and tireless people work behind-the-scenes to make everything possible. In the latest episode of Corvette Racing’s "Track to Street" series, they talk about the importance of having these guys on board and doing their jobs to the fullest of their capabilities. Leading up to a race, the crew has a lot to worry about, including the car’s engine, tires, wheels, and even strategies being employed during the race. It’s a lot of work that needs plenty of attention and these guys have proven over the years that they’re up to task. And when the race finishes and everybody else heads out for some nice rest and recreation, the crew sticks around to get everything back in order. From packing their gear to running some diagnostic tests on the car, everything is done meticulously to ensure that everything is accounted for. If there’s anything that defines ’team effort,’ the pit crew of Corvette Racing fits that mold to a tee. | Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 gets a boost from Akrapovic Posted: 17 Jul 2011 04:00 PM PDT Akrapovic is widely known for attaching their exhaust systems to some of the nicest cars on the market. Vehicles such as the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Mitsubishi Evo X have all received this treatment. Now, with its 500 HP naturally aspired engine, the 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 is one of the most impressive cars available on the market, but Akrapovic have provided what we are going to call a tuning detail to further tweak its performance. Akrapovic actually has five different exhaust systems which will increase the engine’s output by up to 17 HP, depending on the version chosen. The first system is an Evolution exhaust system that will add 12 HP and 10 lb-ft. Then there is the Evolution Race which will add 17 HP and 16 lb-ft of torque. The Sports cup version will add 8 HP and 11 lbs-ft and the Slip-On exhaust system will add 4 HP and 2 lbs-ft. Finally, there is the Slip-On Race version that adds more horsepower and torque, although those numbers are not specified. All of these systems will include titanium link pipes with exhaust valves and a titanium end muffler.
