| Tanner Foust breaks world record for longest four-wheeled vehicle jump Posted: 30 May 2011 09:00 AM PDT Yesterday’s running of the Indianapolis 500 - the 100th anniversary of the inaugural race - will go down as one of the most dramatic auto races in the series’ long and illustrious history. 23-year old rookie J.R. Hilderbrand already had the race won until he lost control of his car and crashed at the very last turn before the checkered flag. Hilderbrand’s misfortune paved the way for Dan Wheldon to make the pass just before the caution came out, leading to a stunning win that left everybody at the Brickyard and all those watching on TV shocked and completely speechless. But that wasn’t the only notable item to happen during the weekend. Just before the start of the Indy 500, the long-awaited world-record jump attempt by Team Hot Wheels, dubbed "Fearless at the 500", finally took place. The team’s "Yellow Driver" - later revealed to be Top Gear USA’s own Tanner Foust - drove a specially prepared truck down a 90-foot ramp before blasting off into another ramp, clearing 332 feet through the air and setting the record for the longest jump of a four-wheeled vehicle in the world. For everybody who’s ever had dreams of riding a stunt like this - we know we did at one point in our lives - Foust’s record-setting jump was a surreal moment, one that probably saw a lot of kids doing their own "world record jumps" in the backyard of their homes after watching the spectacle. If you missed the whole thing, you can check out the video that Hot Wheels released of the jump in its entirety. | Posted: 30 May 2011 08:00 AM PDT Lets do some math: what can you do with $270,000? Buy a Porsche 911 GT2 RS with $245,000, put some gas and make an impressive trip in a place where you wanted to go for a very long time. Or, you can buy a watch. Yes, you read that correctly. Porsche Design store in Dubai Mall has put on sale a limited edition Porsche Design Indicator timepiece that cost AED 990,000 or about $270,000 at the current exchange rates. There will be only 50 units built. The new Porsche watch has been designed by the car maker in cooperation with the Swiss watchmaker Eterna. It includes a mix of 18-carat rose gold, natural rubber and titanium. The clasps and body are made of rose gold, with a titanium face and rubber straps that look like Porsche tires. The face includes a stop watch and second timer, and a dial turns from green to red when the watch runs low on power. The watch will get its power from the movement of your wrist. $270K Porsche Design watch originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 30 May 2011 15:00 EST. |

| BMW plans to make small car looking cool Posted: 30 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT Taking under consideration the current economical situation and all the regulations regarding CO2 emission you should expect to see car makers heading to small cars. For example BMW plans to modify the current 1-Series so that it will include a city compact, a F.A.S.T. Family Activity Sports Tourer and a Gran Turismo, while a new 2-Series model will be offered in both coupe and cabrio. Next to them the Bavarian company will also develop a Z2 and a M2 model, all of them small, but very cool sports cars. For the next generation 1-Series BMW plans to increase the wheelbase, but also to include a significant number of features that will allow luxury options normally found in high end Premium luxury cars available in the compact class. The model will also include the next generation "Efficient Dynamics" technologies that will make it the most fuel efficient car in it’s segment. The coupe and the cabrio version will no longer be sold as a 1-Series. Instead BMW will launch a new 2-Series model. It will feature a further progressive sporting interpretation with clean design lines. You should expect the new 2-Series to be launched in 2013. The decision to bring a M2 model was helped by the exceptional response to the new 1er M Coupe. According to BMW, the new model will "push the envelope" for small performance cars. But the most impressive model will of course be the Z2 which it is expected to be revealed in late 2013. | Posted: 30 May 2011 06:00 AM PDT If you are a fan of the Tron Legacy movie that aired last year you should know that it is full with dreaming of the wondrous vehicles. And is no wonder that people would try designing vehicles similar to those in the movie. For example, Timur Bozca, a young and enthusiastic designer has developed the "Tron Car" - a vehicle that seems suitable for any ride on both Earth or Grid. His car is a combination of the elements found in the movie: it combines a glossy black body with blue neon lines on either side of the car. The car sits on 20" wheels that are also highlighted by blue neon lines. The concept’s dimension are 4000 x 2000 x 1550 mm and is comes from the future it is an electronic vehicle. The car runs on four electronic Hub Motors that take their power from both battery and power units for charging and storing energy. And you will be happy to know that this is a family car: it offers interior room for four people. Tron Car by Timur Bozca originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 30 May 2011 13:00 EST. |
| Posted: 30 May 2011 05:00 AM PDT From the Land Down Under, an Australian automaker is in the process of developing the country’s first supercar. Developed by Joss Development, the JP1 is a car that’s fast taking shape in time for its debut at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne from July 1 to July 10 The car that’s expected to appear at the event is a final prototype model, leading to the first production version that’s slated to enter the market later this year or possibly at the start of 2012. The evolution of this car is a long time in the making, having made its original debut with the first prototype model seven years ago in Melbourne. "We had an amazing reception for our JT1 prototype in Melbourne [in 2004], but building a car business is very involved," explained JOSS Developments Technical Director, Matt Thomas. Over the past few years, the company has continued to work on all aspects surrounding their operations, including building investments, working with technical suppliers, and putting in place the right group of people that will see to the car’s success when it’s officially launched. Turns out, that time is fast approaching and Joss Developments is getting primed and ready to introduce to the world the first supercar to come from Australia. | Posted: 30 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT While Mercedes has finally revealed details on the SLS AMG Roadster, Vath Automobiltechnik has made some very impressive updates for the coupe version. While in its standard version the SLS AMG Coupe develops a total of 570 HP, the tuner has managed to squeeze an extra 45 HP and to reduce the 0 to 60 mph sprint time with 0.2 seconds. Also they are offering a pretty impressive updates list for both the exterior and the interior. But you will have to pay an extra 32,670 Euro or about $46,600 if this package is interesting you. In order to obtain this impressive engine update, the tuner is offering a newly programmed engine management with custom ignition and injection characteristics. The result is an output of 615 HP, a peak torque of 501 lbs-ft, a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph. | Posted: 30 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT The Italian Polizia has never been shy about introducing Lamborghinis to their fleet of police cars, having already done so in the past for the Lamborghini Gallardo Now that Lamborghini has officially introduced their new baby, the LP700-4 Aventador, we think that it’s only a matter of time before a number of these Italian supercars are dressed up in the familiar blue and white finish of the polizia. To give us an idea of what to expect if and when the car makes its first appearance safeguarding the Italian roads, Milanno Artworks, together with CarreraDesign, has created a number of renderings of what the Aventador Polizia is poised to look like. Details about the car isn’t going to be announced anytime soon, but as a special police vehicle, it is expected to carry with a number of special features, including a defibrillator, a refrigerator container for transport of organs, and police lights - probably using LED lights - under the air intakes and inside the Italian supercar. Seeing as Lamborghini and the Italian Polizia have a strong relationship buoyed by their continued collaboration, we won’t bet against seeing an Aventador Polizia down the road. | Posted: 05 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT Mercedes has caused history to repeat itself as they have come out with a roadster version for one of their popular coupes. This trend was seen in the SLR McLaren and will now repeat itself with the SLS AMG coupe version. The SLS AMG Roadster will be revealed in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but right now the car is under extreme testings. In terms of design, the roadster version will remain faithful to the coupe version. However, it will drop the gullwing doors in favor of more traditional units. The SLS Roadster will be offered with Mercedes’ traditional retractable soft-top which can be opened and closed electrohydraulically while on the move up to 30 mph. The Mercedes SLS AMG roadster version will be powered by a 6.3-liter V8 engine with 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. However, being a much heavier model, it will rocket from 0 to 60mph in 4.0 seconds before topping out at approximately 192 mph. In USA, the SLS Roadster will be priced at around $200,000.
