RUF CTR 3

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Porsche tuning firm extraordinaire, RUF, is one of the best in the business at what it does. So much so, that they produce some of the fastest and most powerful Porsche upgrades on the planet.

The latest model of their Cayman-based CTR 3 is a perfect example of that. Already boasting two previous models, the CTR 3 is the epitome of how a Porsche Cayman should be tuned up. On its own, the German sports car is already capable of producing an output of 265 horsepower, thanks to a 2.9-liter inline-six engine, but RUF have put their talents to good use to give the Cayman the proper juicing up. This was done by completely redesigning the car’s look and replacing the existing engine with a more powerful 3.8-liter flat-six cylinder engine with a staggering output of 750 horsepower.

Just in case your math is slow, that’s more than twice the ponies the standard Cayman has. Just goes to show how these guys are one of the best at what they do.

More details on the RUF CTR 3 after the jump.

Lamborghini Estoque Convertible

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 08:00 AM PDT

A third model has always been in Lamborghini's plans and, although rumors have been circulating about an SUV or sedan dilemma, the Estoque Concept seems to be well on its way to production. In fact, its debut should be arriving sometime in 2014 and much like the Sesto Elemento Spyder we talked about earlier today, Lamborghini will also be offering a drop top version of the Estoque which will be unveiled one year after the sedan's debut.

The Lamborghini Estoque Convertible will arrive, first in concept form, in 2015 with a production version following in 2016. So far, all we have on the model is a leaked document confirming its existence, but we imagine it will follow along the same design lines previewed on the 2008 Estoque Concept, minus the solid roof. Rumors suggest that the Estoque – both sedan and convertible versions – will benefit from the same V10 engine that will debut in the Cabrera in 2013. This will be a new generation V10 engine combined with a supercharger that will deliver up to about 600 HP.

The Estoque Convertible's debut will tackle the same market segment as the Porsche Panamera Convertible which is finding its way to the market in 2012. The earlier Panamera debut will allow Porsche to upgrade the model as needed for when the Estoque Convertible shows its face in 2016.

Porsche 911 / 991

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

The 911 is the most successful model in Porsche’s history. It started its long history back in 1963 and since then Porsche has offered five distinct generations: 911 classic, 964 Series, 993 Series, 996 Series, and 997 Series. Moreover, the sixth one is already under intense testings and will make its official debut in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

It may be a little unorthodox for Porsche to be bringing out a new generation 911 despite the fact they just revealed a facelift version, but the requests keep changing and Porsche must answer the call of duty. Their latest target is improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The sixth generation 911, or the 998, will be a completely new vehicle, even though everyone will recognize it as a 911 model. Shortly after the launch of the 998 911, Porsche will also be releasing the Turbo, GT2, and GT3 in 2012.

UPDATE 06/30/2011: According to a TeamSpeed post, the guys from Car & Driver were invited to test the 991 in South Africa and they have been kind enough to share the car's official specifications.

The car has grown 2.2 inches in length and 4.0 inches at the wheelbase, but the front and rear overhangs are shorter, 1.3 and 0.5 inches respectively. The car's roofline is also lower by 0.5 inches. Apparently the change in length at the wheelbase is due to the fact that the new model will get a hybrid powertrain beginning in 2016.

The Porsche 911/991 will also feature a full-length sunroof and standard 19-inch wheels on the Carrera, 20-inch on Carrera S (20s optional on Carrera)

As for the engine modifications, the Carrera will be powered by a 3.4-liter, direct-injected flat-six engine that delivers a total of 350 HP at 6400 rpm and max torque of 280 lb-ft between 4400 and 6000 rpm. The Carrera S, on the other hand, will get a 3.8-liter flat-six with direct injection engine that delivers a total of 400 HP at 7000 rpm. Both models will be offered with either a seven-speed manual gearbox or the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic, both made by ZF and both featuring launch control. Fuel economy has been improved by 12-15%. All of these features push out a Nürburgring lap time of 8:04 for the 991, 7:50 for the 991 S. The "Best setup" can achieve a 7:37 time.

More details on the 2012 Porsche 998 911 after the jump.

Nissan GT-R Alpha 12 by AMS Performance

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT

One of Japan’s greatest sports cars, the Nissan GT-R, has been the subject of countless aftermarket programs. That being said, it shouldn’t be surprising that one more company is preparing arguably the most powerful GT-R project we’ve seen in recent time.

AMS Performance is no stranger to working with Godzilla, having most recently produced the insane Alpha 10 program that netted the GT-R with 1,100 horsepower. This time, the company’s upping the ante once again with the new Alpha 12 program that takes the GT-R’s output from 1,100 ponies all the way up 1,318 horsepower and 1,014 lb/ft of torque. Horses gone wild!

To make the car produce that much juice, AMS Performance took the GT-R’s 3.8-liter, twin-turbo engine and modified the system while also increasing its boost pressure. On top of that, AMS also went out and reinforced the block to ensure that the car’s engine could handle all the horses galloping underneath the hood.

The result is a car that can blast off from 60 mph to 130 mph in just 3.46 seconds while breaking a quarter-mile in just nine seconds at speeds in excess of 166 mph.

The full details of the car have yet to be revealed, but the company has released a couple of videos of the car hitting the track and performing some dyno tests to ensure that it makes the most out of its 1,318 horses.

Tata considering joint engine development with Jaguar Land Rover

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:00 AM PDT

It’s been about three years since Tata bought Jaguar and Land Roverfrom one of America’s big top three - Ford - and now the company is thinking of taking the last few necessary steps to completely cut ties with the former owner. A new Tata annual report has been released stating that the company is considering a joint engine-development program with its Jaguar Land Rover unit. If pushed through, the new engine could cement the two brands’ independence from Ford.

"To optimize the synergistic strengths between JLR and Tata Motors in India, an examination is also under way on a joint engine development program which would have manufacturing facilities both in the U.K. and India," Ratan Tata said in a recent interview.

These new engines will be a big step for the Indian company, who are beginning to pick up speed with models like the Range Rover Evoque and the new Jaguar XK and XF. Our concern will be for future models which will need adequate engines to obtain proper performance numbers matching that of the Ford-built engines. Whether or not Tata has the ability to pull something like this off is still up in the air.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Spyder

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT

When the Sesto Elemento Concept first debuted at the 2010 Paris Auto Show, there was plenty of discussion as to whether or not Lamborghini would send it to production. It’s been several months later and questions are still be raised to that effect, although production seems almost certain with the hits taken by some of the major automakers. How can Lamborghini not take advantage of a vehicle that has been built using a masterful complete CFRP process? In fact, how can they not build this vehicle and build a Spyder version as well?

It may seem a little far-fetched to some, but creating a concept that has drawn as much attention as the Sesto Elemento and then not building on it further with a Spyder version seems a bit ludicrous. This is especially true considering every other Lamborghini in the lineup has its drop top brethren added to the mix. If and when the Sesto Spyder is developed, it will feature the same technology as the coupe version and will be powered by a massive V10 power unit with an output of about 570 HP. While the 0 to 60 mph sprint won’t be made in the same 2.5 seconds thanks to the added weight of a convertible top, the Sesto Spyder will still be one of the most impressive roadster models offered.

As far as its debut and availability are concerned, the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Spyder should be showing its face in some way shape or form in 2013. It will more than likely follow along the lines of its Coupe version with a limited run and a hefty price tag. The future Sesto Elemento (Coupe) will be limited to just 20 units, each carrying a price tag of 1.9 million euro, or about $2.8 million at the current exchange rates.

Bluebird Team wants a crack at the land speed record for an electric car

Posted: 03 Jul 2011 11:00 AM PDT

We’ve been harping about world records on this site for a little while now. It’s not because we’ve suddenly developed a fascination for them, but because we’ve always been on the look-out for records like this.

One record that seems to continually pop up recently is the land speed record for an electric car. And just as it always comes up in conversations, somebody is trying to take a shot at beating it. The latest attempt we’ve heard about comes from the Bluebird Team, a team of engineers and drivers building a car - the Bluebird Electric - with the hopes of breaking the top speed record for an electric car. Headed by land-speed racing veteran Don Wales, the Bluebird Team is looking at breaking 500 mph in the Bluebird Electric, a notable feat considering that the current record only sits at 307 mph, which, incidentally, was set just a year ago.

Despite the lofty goals being set by the team, the work done to jump start the entire project is still in its infancy stages. The dream is there; the money, unfortunately, isn’t.

"I have a team of 30 people requiring accommodation and feeding and volunteers are needed to help as course marshals and fodders, " Wales said in a statement. "Without a principal sponsor as yet, the development of the car is taking all of what limited budget we have".

Lack of money notwithstanding, the Bluebird Team is still pushing forward with their goal. As part of their testing, the team took the car to the Pendine Sands in Wales on July 2 and 3 for some testing.

If anybody’s interested in giving these guys a hand through donations, you can do so by contacting Rebecca Nicholls on her email at rebecca@bluebirdspeedrecords.com.

Learn more about the Bluebird Team and their BlueBird Electric Car after the jump.

The Batmobile by Putsch Racing

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT

With the release of the first Dark Knight Rises trailer, it seemed appropriate to commemorate the occasion by showing you Batman’s original cinematic vehicle. Of course, this one has been pumped up to turbocharged levels.

Yes, we’re talking about the original Batmobile that appeared in Tim Burton’s Batman movies; the very same one that inspired modern-day iterations of the Caped Crusader’s all-purpose vehicle. Only this time, it doesn’t come with a prop engine like so many others. This one comes with something pretty bad ass: a turboshaft turbine engine that was sourced from a naval drone helicopter and produces an output of 385 horsepower. Pretty impressive, right?

The work comes courtesy of Casey Putsch and Putsch Racing. And in addition to adding a legitimate turbo engine, the team also dressed up the interior from its spartan-like set-up to something a little more appropriate for a car of this stature, including an Apple iPad set-up right in the middle of the car’s center console.

Needless to say, this Batmobile doesn’t come with all the heavy artillery that the Caped Crusader used Gotham City. Lack of firepower notwithstanding, the tuned-up engine still makes it one of the most formidable Batmobiles we’ve seen patrolling the streets of the world.

Spy Shots: Next generation Mercedes A-Class reveals its brand new shape

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 02:00 PM PDT

Mercedes has already previewed the next generation A-Class with the concept version, and as the concept shows, the next A-Class has nothing in common with the model it replaces. The A-Class has been called outdated, unimpressive, and even ugly, but Mercedes hopes the next generation will change all of that.

This new generation A-Class heads straight for the BMW 1-Series and the Audi A3 in terms of its compact shape which it will take directly from the concept. It will drop the current box design and will be offered in both hatchback - to be revealed first - and sedan versions. Rumors suggest that Mercedes will also bring a three door hatch, as well as a convertible version.

As for the engine line-up, it is rumored that the next A-Class will be offered with the same engines as the C-Class. This would mean an array of both petrol and diesel engines ranging from 120 to 306 HP. An AMG version will also be offered.

Expect the new A-Class to be revealed in early 2012 with sales beginning shortly thereafter.
