| Girard-Perregaux R&D 01 Watch Posted: 09 May 2011 09:00 AM PDT Luxury timepiece-maker Girard Perregaux needs no introduction when it comes to creating some of the most lust-worthy watches in the world. Just like a lot of other luxury timepieces, the company has close ties to auto racing, probably even more than most considering that since 1992 until 2010, the Swiss company has had the late Luigi Macaluso as its president. The 1972 European Rally Champion and later president of both the Italian Motorsport Federation and the International Karting Federation, Luigi Macaluso had oil and petroleum running through his veins. As one of the most influential figures in auto racing before his passing last year, Macaluso was also fond of high-end driver's watches, none more so than the products of Girard-Perregaux. The Swiss watchmaker's latest creation, the R&D 01, is a chronograph that features inverted push-buttons, dials styled after a car's gauges, a tough rotating internal bezel, and a crown field that takes the look of a Formula One air intake. The watch actually took more than a few years to build with lengthy time given to research, development, and feedback given by Formula 1 drivers. In the end, the R&D 01 is exactly what Luigi Macaluso wanted for the perfect driver's watch: sporty, classy, and functional with a touch of subtle luxury. | Posted: 09 May 2011 08:00 AM PDT At the end of 2010, Ford ran an interesting poll to find a name for their 2012 Mustang V6 Performance Package. After 1.4 million fans took the opportunity to make their suggestions known on the company’s Mustang Facebook page, Ford has decided to call the package Mayhem. "We saw great enthusiasm from fans, with tons of creative, unique names coming in," said Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. "The contest was twofold – it let us engage with fans by letting them have a say, and it helped build awareness for the package." The man behind the name came from Charlotte, N.C. and as his prize, Ford has provided him with a three year lease on a 2012 Mustang equipped with the Mayhem Mustang Package. The new Mayhem package will be offered with the same all-aluminum Ti-VCT V6 engine producing 305 HP as found in the standard model, but will benefit from a few extras. A unique electronic stability control calibration with sport mode for performance driving has been added to boost the driving experience and Mustang GT front and rear brake calipers with performance friction pads do their job by providing greater stopping force. The upgraded Mustang will also receive Mustang GT coupe front and rear stabilizer bars, Mustang GT front struts and rear shocks/springs, a Shelby GT500 rear lower control arm, and a strut tower brace for increased body rigidity. There will also be unique 19-inch wheels wrapped around Pirelli performance tires, some unique badging, and a 3.31 rear axle ratio for quicker off-the-line acceleration. | Porsche Panamera by Platinum Motorsport Posted: 09 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT It’s always interesting when one tuning firm completes a project and that same project gets another once-over from a different company. We’ve just seen this scenario with the Mercedes-Benz G 55 AMG Hamann Typhoon and Specialty Car Craft’s own interpretation of the vehicle, and now Platinum Motorsport is doing the same thing with a Porsche Panamera tuned by Mansory. The Panamera started its day with the Mansory kit which includes a new front skirt with adapted LED daytime running lights, a striking bonnet made of carbon fiber, an enormous carbon diffuser, centrally located double end pipes, and 21-inch rims on Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The 4.8L engine was already pumped up with an ECU upgrade, larger turbo chargers, and a stainless steel sports exhaust system that increased the output from 500 HP to 690 HP. With the new output, the sprint from 0 to 60 mph is made in less than 4 seconds, while top speed goes of 204 mph. Yes, that kit does seem to be complete already, but Platinum Motorsport thought it better to provide the sports sedan with a new set of 22" Agetro M140 painted in black and a sleek black exterior paint job. They say that sometimes by giving a little, you get a lot; we think these minor modifications illustrate that point. | Ferrari 458 Italia Zeus by SR Auto Group Posted: 09 May 2011 06:00 AM PDT We’re getting used to seeing all kinds of names for the many different tuning projects completed by SR Auto Group and each one gets more promising with its powerful and aggressive title. The latest kit to come out of the Vancouver based firm is for the Ferrari 458 Italia and is called "Zeus." Since it’s named after the "Father of Gods and Men" himself, we fully expected a god-like package and SR Auto delivers with a vehicle that "roams the town with its thunderous roar that claims the concrete pavement as its home." That "thunderous roar" they are talking about escapes the 458 Italia’s 570 HP 4,499 cc V8 engine from the new Akrapovic exhaust system. In addition to the added growl, the sports car also gets a stronger look supplied by a gloss black roof combined with a Novitec Aero kit The aero kit includes a front lip spoiler, side skirts, rear skirts, and a rear lip spoiler. Its stance was intensified with a new set of lowering springs. Finishing off the look is a new set of Forgiato Aguzzo wheels, 21" at front and 22" at the rear. We may not ever get the chance to roam this world as a God, but at least now SR Auto Group has given us the opportunity to drive around in one. | Posted: 09 May 2011 05:00 AM PDT Kia’s highly popular ’Hamster’ campaign drew some rave reviews from a lot of people when it began airing a couple of years ago. It’s become so popular that Kia actually developed a special edition Soul late last year, which it previewed at SEMA last October. What we didn’t know and what the Korean automaker recently announced is that they’re in the process of releasing a special edition Kia Soul called the ’Hamster Edition’ in the very near future. Details behind the special edition model have yet to be announced, but there have been whispers saying that the Hamster Edition will come with black exterior graphics, a rear spoiler, and a set of 18" alloy wheels outside while its interior will boast of a push-button ignition, automatic climate control, black leather seats, and special edition floor mats commemorating the car’s exclusivity. It’s very rare that a commercial can be so popular that it leads to a special edition car being built to celebrate it. Kia’s "This or That" ads paved the way for the Soul Hamster Edition, proving that the auto industry won’t hesitate on riding a popular campaign and milking it for all its worth. | Dartz Prombron Nagel by Gray Design Posted: 09 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT If there ever were two off-the-wall companies that we wanted to get to work together, it would be the people from Dartz and Gray Design. Known for their peculiarities as much as for their penchant for unbridled luxury, both Dartz and Gray Design have become favorites of ours in their own uproarious way. So imagine our surprise when we found out that the two have announced the release of the Dartz Prombron Nagel, the world's first armored sportback SUV that is capable of pulling yachts. The Nagel is actually named after one Andrey Nagel who, together with Vadim Mikhaloff, drove a C24/55 Monaco RussoBalt sports car at the Monte Carlo Rally back in 1911. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the Prombron Nagel was named after the legendary racer on the 100th anniversary of his Monte Carlo Rally victory. The car was designed by Gray Design's very own Eduard Gray who used the platform of the Dartz Prombron and, with the help of the world's safest KAPSULA technology, made it up to 15 meters in length and capable of pulling as much as five tons. In terms of design, it's everything we thought it would look like if Dartz and Gray Design teamed up for a project, which means that it looks completely out-of-the-ordinary with odd angles, strange contours, and plenty of bulletproofing to go around. Performance numbers aren't out yet, but word has it that underneath that hood, the Nagel will pack 2,000 horsepower with a projected top speed of 155 mph. Top speed seems kind of low so hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised when the figures are released. From the minds of two companies that are far from conventional, the Dartz Prombron Nagel is the personification of an armor-carrying, 2,000-horsepower monster. Heck, it even looks the part. | Pontiac "6T9 Goat" by Trans Am Depot Posted: 09 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT A little over a year ago at the 2009 SEMA show, Trans Am Depot introduced a conversion kit for the Chevrolet Camaro, affectionately turning it from modern-day Bumblebee muscle to an iteration of what a Pontiac Firebird would look like. They even had a name for it: the Phoenix Trans Am. Fast forward about 20 months and Trans Am Depot has returned for their next Camaro-based Pontiac conversion kit. The car of choice this time is the 1969 GTO Judge, although you certainly wouldn't mistake this one for the real deal. In any case, Trans Am Depot's work is called the "6T9 Goat" and looking at the renderings sent over by TAD, the new conversion kit comes with plenty of styling elements, including a bespoke front end with its own split grille. There's also a revised hood with air scoops, a new tail lamp, a restyled 'old-school' trunk with a small rear wing, quad tail pipes, and a new set of alloy wheels. "The 6T9 Goat concept was created by designer Kevin Morgan to capture the look and feel of the classic ’69 GTO Judge," Grand Am Depot said in a statement. "The 1969 GTO is considered by many to be one of the top ten muscle cars of all time. Available this fall, this modern day version incorporates the look of yesteryear with the modern convenience and technology of today." Hardened fans of the classic GTO Judge – and the Camaro, for that matter – will probably snicker at the thought of driving a kit version of the old classic, but as the market has shown in recent years, there are some people that will still pay for conversion kits, even if it isn't the real thing. If you're one of these folks, here's your chance to own a modern-day iteration of an all-time classic. Just make sure you don't promote it as an original. | Bugatti Veyron Sang Bleu Yacht Concept by Ben Walsh Posted: 09 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT Fresh off the concept design of the Audi Trimaran comes another superfluous yacht concept that completely blew our minds. Courtesy of Ben Walsh, a graduate of the Royal College of Art and the man responsible for the interior of the Cadillac Converj concept, is this Bugatti Veyron-inspired superyacht concept design. Walsh, now a part of the interior design team of PSA Peugeot Citroen, designed his superyacht concept by taking cues from an exclusive version of the Bugatti Veyron: the Sang Bleu Edition. A ton of props definitely goes to Ben Walsh for the stunning design of the concept yacht. The carbon fiber and aluminum construction of the boat and the two-tone finish that’s reminiscent of the Veyron Sang Bleu gives this futuristic hydroride a classy, sporty, and luxurious look, sort of like the equivalent of driving a Veyron Sang Bleu on asphalt. Except with this yacht concept, you’re laying waste to the waters of the world. Unfortunately, there’s very little chance of seeing this concept yacht come to life. Nonetheless, it’s still a pretty awesome addition to our wish list. Bugatti Veyron Sang Bleu Yacht Concept by Ben Walsh originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 9 May 2011 09:00 EST. |
| Audi Trimaran concept by Stefanie Behringer Posted: 08 May 2011 11:00 AM PDT If Audi can make themselves a cool little bicycle, why not throw in a boat while they are at it? That’s the opinion of German grad student, Stefanie Behringer, which is why she designed a trimaran yacht as her graduate project under the supervision of the AUDI concept design group in Munich, Germany. The new trimaran boat integrates two jet skis within a motorboat, but its basis is pure trimaran. A trimaran is a boat with multiple hulls that features a main center hull. This center hull is supported by two smaller outrigger hulls on either side of the boat. The Audi trimaran is 15m long and only 6.40m wide. The deck has enough room for 12 people, but more space is available in the form of four berths. Audi’s part in the project involves two efficient and lightweight Audi TDI (turbo-charged injection) diesel engines that develop about 500 HP each. For speeds of up to eight knots, the boat will use the 100 HP electric engines that are used to drive the jet skis, but at higher speeds (of up to 30 knots), the boat will use the two engines alternatively. With a total output of about 1200 HP, the boat is rumored to hit a top speed of 40 knots. Automakers sure don’t make what they used to. Hit the jump for the technical details on the Audi Trimaran.
