| Posted: 03 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT As you probably already know by now, BMW is preparing the next M5 sports sedan and they promised it would be "a brilliant car." The first concept version will be unveiled at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show, with a production version to follow at the Frankfurt Motor Show a few months later. With the new M5, BMW will focus on improving all the aspects of the car. First, the car will be built on an all-new aluminum chassis and will feature the intense use of carbon fiber. This will help reduce the car’s weight considerably. It will also produce 25% less CO2 and the new V8 engine will require less fuel. Under the hood is where it may get a bit tricky. Originally, the new M5 was to carry the same twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 engine that can be found in the BMW X6 M. This is still the case, but instead of the 555 hp found in the X6 M, the engine is said to deliver an impressive 578 HP in the M5. UPDATE 03/30/2011: BMW has unveiled a 30 minute video of the M5 sports car and has also confirmed that we will have the first details for the sports car on April 1st. No , this isn’t an April Fool’s joke - at least as far as we know. The official release of details will be followed by its public debut at the Shanghai Motor Show a few weeks later. Video after the jump. UPDATE 05/03/2011: According to the British magazine, AutoCar, BMW will offer a four-wheel-drive version of the future M5 sports sedan. According to the same source, the company has no plans to create a long-wheelbase version of the car: "The long-wheelbase platform is reserved for standard versions of the 5-series sold in the Chinese market. There are no existing plans for an M5 on this structure." Hit the jump to find out more on the future BMW M5. BMW M5 originally appeared on topspeed.com on Tuesday, 3 May 2011 14:00 EST. |
| Mercedes SLK R172 Accurian RS by Piecha Posted: 10 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT Summer is just around the corner so to prepare your vehicle for those long rides on the beach, Piecha Design is offering their new "Accurian RS" package for owners of the Mercedes SLK. It doesn’t provide any extra oomph, but it will ensure the driver is riding in style with some nice exterior updates. The new Accurian RS package combines a new front spoiler lip with lateral grids and a nifty cover that turns the grids into a three-part piece. The front of the Mercedes also gets LED daytime running lights on the right and left side before shifting the eye to the new side skirt covers and then the new rear diffuser (available in small or large versions). Still at the back of the car, the owner will receive QUADRO 4-tube mufflers on a reworked AMG styling rear apron and a classic rear spoiler lip. The car sits on black 19" wheels that are highlighted by the 25 mm lowering springs. The tuner is also offering a practical comfort top control, which allows for opening and closing of the top via the serial key. This feature will work for speeds of up to 37 mph. | Mandy Lange named Miss Tuning 2011 at Tuning World Bodensee Posted: 10 May 2011 06:00 AM PDT The votes are officially in for the title of Miss Tuning 2011 and 23-year-old hot blonde, Mandy Lange, beat out 17 other finalists to take home the crown at the recently-concluded Tuning World Bodensee. As the biggest tuning fair in Europe - it’s similar to SEMA in our neck of the woods - the Tuning World Bodensee has been one of the most popular auto events in Europe and as such, the Miss Tuning competition is considered one of the most important aspects of the show. In addition to beating out 17 other women, Lange beat out over 500 applicants for the title, earning the crown from 2010 winner Kristen Zippel and officially becoming the face and ambassador of the European tuning world. As part of her win, Lange, a fitness instructor from Brandenburg, was awarded a new Skoda Fabia RS to go with a two-month promotional contract with Pizza.de and a gig as the face of the ultra exclusive 2012 Miss Tuning Calendar. Congratulations to Mandy Lange for being named Miss Tuning 2011! It’s an honor well-deserved! | Posted: 10 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT For all intents and purpose, this full body kit for the Nissan 350Z looks pretty cool, although there might be a little confusion on the front bumper. Anyone else think it looks remarkably similar to the Mansory Porsche Panamera? We don’t know if it’s a coincidence or not, but we’re prepared to let it pass. The work on this 350Z was done by WEBER Sports, which introduced the car at the Tokyo Auto Salon earlier this year. It’s chalked loaded with a full body kit that includes the aforementioned front bumper, a new bonnet with air ducts, side sills, a rear wing, a rear bumper, an under duct center, and plenty of carbon fiber components to go around. All things considered, the whole kit looks awesome on the 350Z, arguably one of the most underrated Japanese sports cars in recent time. While there are some items that leave a lot to be desired - the front bumper being one of them - the overall treatment given by WEBER Sports on the sports car makes it an eye-catching piece of metal orange fire ball. | Ferrari drops plans of facelifted 599: will introduce new model in 2012 Posted: 10 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT Plans for a face-lifted version of the Ferrari 599 was supposed to take shape in the next 18 months, but Ferrari's latest model, the FF, has proven to be quite a hit. In fact, it’s such a hit that the Italian automaker has dropped plans of a face-lifted version of the 599 in favor of a replacement model. The soon-to-be successor of the Ferrari 599 will be derived from the FF and will boast of unquestioned performance numbers. For starters, we’re talking a 700-horsepower, V12 engine plus top-level fuel efficiency. Other details surrounding the successor to the 599 include an aluminum frame that's made up of around 20 different alloys to go with some composite panels. The supercar will also feature a multi-link rear axle with a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle, a method that Ferrari has previously implemented on some of its past models, including the California, the 458 Italia, and the aforementioned FF. In essence, the 599 successor is being prepared to be sportier, more powerful, and more track-oriented than the FF. Something tells us that this won't be the last time we're going to hear about the successor of the 599 before it makes its debut in the latter part of 2012. | It only takes $2 million to be a part of the exclusive Ferrari 599XX club Posted: 10 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT Ever wish you could race around the track in a car that was produced for Ferrari’s most loyal and demanding customers? Better yet, ever wish that car was the first ever production-derived sports car to break the 7-minute barrier, lapping the Nurburgring in 6 min 58.16 seconds? If you haven’t guessed by now, we are talking about the irresistible track day Ferrari 599XX and one of those loyal and demanding customers we were talking about earlier is giving one lucky person the opportunity to own his exclusive ride. It’s hard to believe that anyone that owns a Ferrari 599XX would so easily put his on the market, but some guy over in France has done so. For 1,315,600 euro, or about $1,907,752 at the current rates, anyone can be the owner of a black 599XX with a matching black interior. The racer only has 932 miles on the odometer and still has a V12 engine that pushes out 700 HP at a whopping 9,000 RPM. This engine is mated to the SuperFast gearbox that is able to swap cogs in a mere 60 milliseconds. Got an extra $2 million to join the party? | Posted: 10 May 2011 01:00 AM PDT Most new cars we feature are the creations from the world’s multibillion dollar automakers and are not very close to the heart. This New Stratos on the other hand is the realized dream of one man who poured his heart, soul, and a ton of his own money into the project. The labour of love involving automotive parts supplier, Michael Stoschek, has taken 24 years to materialize, all starting out from a friendship forged at a Lancia Stratos event held in Alta Badia back in 1986. Michael, a self-confessed uber fan of the original Stratos, decided to create his own new version of the classic Italian Rally superstar. The outcome of all the hard work and passion, we have to say, is utterly amazing. To prove the passion this part-time racer has for the original, he has even bought the trademark rights for the Stratos name from Lancia – which we can assure you didn't come cheap. The resemblance to the original is uncanny, yet everything has been updated and made better, without losing any of the nostalgia and old school appeal. The overall "wedge" shape is still the same and the powerplant is still from Ferrari – albeit louder and more powerful. The New Stratos shares a large amount of its underpinnings with the Ferrari F430 Scuderia – which is a brilliant car. If that's any indication of how this car will ride, handle, sound, and perform, we are in for an absolute treat of automotive euphoria. Updated 12/06/2010: We have added a new video of the new Stratos. Enjoy! UPDATE 02/14/2011: The 2010 One-Off Lancia Stratos may not be a one-off for very much longer. So far 40 potential buyers in Europe and other regions have expressed in interest in purchasing the Ferrari-based model, and plenty more are expected to climb on the bandwagon. If a small series is produced, rumors suggest that each unit will cost about €400,000, or around $545,000 at the current exchange rates. Something tells us that Michael Stoschek - the owner of the one and only 2010 Lancia Stratos so far - may not be too happy with his exclusive ride getting cloned, even if it is only for about 40 other people. UPDATE 05/10/2011: Michael Stoschek took his brand new Lancia Stratos for a spin on the race track. Hit the jump for the video. Hit the jump to continue reading. | Posted: 09 May 2011 01:00 PM PDT In addition to the Kia Soul Hamster unveiled earlier, Kia has brought another concept from the 2010 SEMA Auto Show to production form: the Soul White Tiger Concept. This new special edition will join not only the Hamster, but also the Denim, Ignition, Shadow Dragon, and Ghost Souls. It will go on sale in late May 2011 at a starting price of $20,695. The new Kia Soul White Tiger Special Edition will be distinguished by a bright white exterior with gray graphics, color-keyed bumpers, a sporty rear spoiler, 18" black alloy wheels, black fender exits, a rear bumper applique, and door alloy fuel. The interior was not left untouched as it received black leather seats, heated front seats, a leather steering wheel and shift knob, a smart key to press the start button, illuminated sill plates, automatic climate control, and front fog lamps. It seems Kia is taking the Soul’s popularity to a whole new level with as many special edition models as the public can take. Haven’t they ever heard of too much of a good thing? | Posted: 09 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT Ferrari will unveil at the Paris Auto Show the special edition SA Aperta, an open-top version of the now famous 599. The model comes to celebrate Pininfarina’s 80th anniversary and will be limited to only 80 units. The SA Aperta is powered by a V12 engine that delivers an impressive 670 HP. It features a low-slung windscreen, a redesigned chassis. Its profile arches back from the A-post to two aerodynamic fins beautifully integrating the two roll-bars which themselves cleverly mimic the outline of the seats. The interior gets sophisticated materials, trim and colors used throughout. Ferrari announced that each SA Aperta will be an unique model. In the official press release Ferrari said: "The SA APERTA is a true roadster which allows its occupants to enjoy the superlative emotions afforded by our signature front-engined V12 architecture in a completely open-top setting. In fact, it has just a light soft top designed to be resorted to only if the weather gets particularly bad." UPDATE 05/09/11: The 80-piece Ferrari 599 SA Aperta is about a rare a modern-day Ferrari can get. Introduced last year at the Paris Motor Show in line with Pininfarina’s 80th anniversary, the Italian supercar is the personification of Ferrari limited edition madness. In this new video of the car, YouTube user Marchettino takes us on an up-close look at the limited run 599. Check out the video after the jump and see what the 599 SA Aperta is all about. | Volkswagen Concept Sports Car by Steel Drake Posted: 09 May 2011 11:00 AM PDT Volkswagen may have debuted the Bluesport sports car concept back in 2009 with hopes of producing it under the VW brand, but we highly doubt that anyone really planned on seeing it live and in production form. Then after the company announced it would shelf the concept until people started buying cars again, we thought it would be left there collecting dust until it was primed and ready to be published in a book of concepts that never stood a chance. Nevertheless, plans for the BlueSport are still in the works and graphic designer, "Steel Drake," has taken the opportunity to preview Volkswagen’s future sports car. His rendition screams, "I’m the Audi R8’s forgotten younger brother," but Drake made sure to throw in his personal influence to differentiate it. Of course, that just left us with a front end that looks like it’s melting off, concave curves oddly place at the front of the doors, and the matching droopy taillights at the back. He did throw in some LED lights to try to balance the quirkiness with some normalcy, but that may have been a wasted attempt. We don’t see this concept ever making it to the Volkswagen drawing table with their stamp of approval, but it does open the doors to what changes Volkswagen could make in order for their new sports car to compete in a populated segment. Ball’s in your court, Volkswagen. Show us what you got. Volkswagen Concept Sports Car by Steel Drake originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 9 May 2011 18:00 EST. |
