| Posted: 23 May 2011 09:00 AM PDT Just like a cinematic trilogy, Swiss electric car maker Protoscar has introduced the third version of their Lampo concept line, called the Lampo 3. The unveiling of the third concept line comes two years after the first Lampo first made waves at the Geneva Motor Show in 2009 and a year after the Lampo 2 was introduced to us. Three concepts in three years with no production version in the horizon. Disappointing as that may sound, there’s just may be a little glimmer of hope for the Lampo 3. With the ultimate goal of producing a purpose designed premium electric sports car, Protoscar has spared no expense in developing every nook and cranny of the whole Lampo line, complete with over 30,000 kilometers of testing with the Lampo and Lampo 2. All the testing and development was then put into the Lampo 3, marking the first time in the company’s three-year development phase that word is spreading of a limited production release sometime in the future. Whether there’s truth to that or just a product of wishful thinking, one thing we know is that there’s some legitimate buzz going on about the Lampo 3. Let’s hope that this ’buzz’ leads to something a little more concrete. Details after the jump Protoscar Lampo 3 originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 23 May 2011 16:00 EST. |
| Posted: 23 May 2011 08:00 AM PDT Lexus UK took two of the company’s most powerful models, the LF-A supercar and the IS-F sports sedan and put them to race at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground track. Of course is needless to say who the winner was, but the video is a really amazing, especially the first part where it shows the LFA's speedometer. It makes you feel like you are driving in a car game. Of course you know Lexus will build only 500 LF-A supercars and the one featured in this video is the car number 16. By the numbers: the LF-A is powered by a 4.8 liter V10 that delivers a maximum output of 560 HP at 9,000 RPM and a peak torque of 354 lb-ft at 6,800 RPM, and it can sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in just 3.7 seconds. On the other hand, the IS-F sports sedan gets a 5.0-liter V8 engine rated at 416 HP at 6,600 rpm and 371 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 5,200 rpm and can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Of course the LF-A has an enormous advantage, but watching the two cars together is a real show! Video: Lexus LF-A vs. IS-F originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 23 May 2011 15:00 EST. |
| Mercedes considers Bentley Continental GT competitor Posted: 23 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT According to the British magazine Autocar, Mercedes is planning a new high-performance four-door coupe that will sit above the current CLS in both performances and price range and will target models like Bentley Continental GT. Mercedes sources have described the model as "über-CLS" ("over-CLS") and it will feature a more dramatic design language and will feature AMG engines and chassis. Of course that all this improvements will be translated into a considerably higher price. This model will be mostly offered on markets that require ultra-expensive, high-performance models, particularly in Russia and the Middle East. You should also consider this model as a response to the forthcoming extreme Porsche Panamera GT coupe that it is expected to be revealed sometime next year. Same sources confirm that is very likely to also see a Maybach version of this model taking under consideration the huge success the Xenatec 62S Coupe has on the market. However, do not expect this new model before the early 2015. Mercedes considers Bentley Continental GT competitor originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 23 May 2011 14:00 EST. |
| Mercedes-Benz Aria Concept 'Swan Wing' Posted: 23 May 2011 06:00 AM PDT So did you like the 2020 Maserati GT Garbin Concept design penned by Jaime Cervantes, Andrea Coccia, and Chetan Rajput? Well, if concept designs are your thing, student Slavche Tanecski did one better with the introduction of his Mercedes-Benz Aria Concept "Swan Wing". Tanecksi, a student at the Munich University of Applied Sciences designed this concept as part of his thesis and was even assisted by Mercedes designers. Pegging it as the future of luxury mobility in 2030, Tanecki designed the Aria Concept Swan Wing using musical instruments as his inspiration. As such, the whole theme of his study revolves around the timeless appeal of instruments, most of which lend an elegant, classy, and noble touch to the car's proportions and surface finishes. There are references to a piano, a violin, a keyboard, and strings, all of which were sculptured together to create a visceral aesthetic that not only surprises, but also follows up with a deep appreciation for a car's definition and overall character. While we certainly enjoyed the GT Garbin Concept, we found ourselves really drawn to this design study. The talent of this young man is obvious, and it should take him to places a lot of us with little to no artistic credibility can only dream of reaching. | Posted: 23 May 2011 05:00 AM PDT Stop the press! On May 21st 2011 RM Auction has featured one of the most impressive cars of all the time: a Ferrari 500 TRC Spider. The car was estimated to an impressive €2.600.000-€3.300.000 (or about $3,600,000 to $4,700,000 at the current exchange rates) and sold for a total of €2.800.000 - or about $3,990,000. This was one of the finest examples in existence with known ownership and successful racing history. The car is rarer than 250 TR and 250 GTO. The 500 TRC was one of the most aesthetically beautiful, brilliantly engineered and efficient sports racing cars offered by Ferrari. It was revealed in 1957 and in the same year it claimed an impressive victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Another 500 TRC claimed a class win at the 1958 Targa Florio. The 500 TRC was a modified version of the 500 TR (Testa Rossa) revealed in 1956 as a successor to the 500 Mondial. The car was created in order to obey the new FIA regulations that were introduced for the 1957 season. Hit the jump to read more about the Ferrari 500 TRC Spider. | Toyota and Subaru sports cars to be revealed at the Tokyo Show Posted: 23 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT The FT-86, in either Toyota or Subaru forms needs no presentation. Everyone knows how this car will look like and for sure we won’t get any surprises from either of the two companies. And we will finally see the production version of the car. Both Toyota and Subaru will bring the production version of their sports car in December at the Tokyo Auto Show. The model will go on sale in 2012 and the Toyota version will be sold as a Scion FR-S on the US market. While Toyota offered us all the design glimpse you might have needed with the launch of three different concept cars, Subaru has only revealed a a transparent concept detailing the car’s boxer engine, rear-drive architecture and suspension. And if you were hoping to see an all-wheel-drive version from Subaru, we have to bring you a sad news: Japanese sources familiar with the program say there are no plans for an AWD version. On the other hand, a good news reveals plans for a convertible version and even a compact sedan to target the BMW 1-Series. | Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Grand Edition Posted: 23 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT A year after Mercedes introduced a ’Grand Edition’ model for the ML-Class SUV, the German automaker is welcoming their second SUV that has been given the same ’Grand Edition’ badge. This, of course, is the new Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Grand Edition, an intimidating special edition SUV that has been given plenty of new exterior and interior features that emphatically promotes its exclusivity or, in Merc parlance, it’s "Grand Edition-ness". Similar to the ML-Class Grand Edition, the GL-Class version packs plenty of wonderful new features on both its exterior and interior. All these additions should make up for the fact that despite its designation, the German automaker still opted to keep the powertrains untouched. That’s a bit of a bummer, if you ask us. But if you’re prepared to let that slide, then all the aesthetic improvements given to the SUV should prove to be enough for this particular special edition GL-Class to warrant some serious attention. | Aston Martin V12 Zagato Concept Posted: 23 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT Aston Martin will be celebrating the iconic DB4GT Zagato’s 50th anniversary with a new concept car developed in collaboration with the Italian design house Zagato. The concept car made its first appearance at the Villa D'Este Concours on May 21st, 2011 and will make its racing debut at Nürburgring on May 28th. Dr. Ulrich Bez, Chief Executive said: "The DNA of both Aston Martin and Zagato has combined successfully to make some of the world's most desirable collector cars in the past and in this special anniversary year of the DB4GT Zagato it is appropriate to explore a modern collaboration. Now is the right time for a new Aston Martin Zagato and in combining our design intelligence I think we can create something fitting of the iconic DB4GT Zagato that has gone before and since established itself as one of the most famous Aston Martins of all time." The original Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato made its first appearance in 1960 at the London Motor Show. It was essentially a much lighter DB4 GT that got worked on by the Italian Coachbuilder to include a 3670 cc straight-6 DOHC engine that produced 314 HP with a top speed of 154 mph. | Mercedes Benz Teams with Eurocopter Posted: 22 May 2011 04:00 PM PDT Mercedes Benz is typically very careful with whom it develops other projects with. Being at the pinnacle of German automotive design since creating the world's first automobile is not something to take lightly. Last year, Mercedes developed an open ocean racing boat with the Cigarette Racing team. Cigarette is also world renowned and therefore made the collaboration a match made in heaven. This year Mercedes has teamed up with a high-end helicopter manufacturer to create a luxury version of their mid-size helicopter offering. The Eurocopter was created in 1992 and was crowned as the world's number 1 manufacturer in 2009. The Mercedes Advanced Design Studio in Italy was commissioned to develop a high end interior for the EC145 helicopter. Since Eurocopter provides transportation for many VIP clients, they felt it would be a great chance to build upon the success of both companies. The interior of the EC145 is large and gave the design team plenty of chances to create a unique and inviting space. Hit the jump for the full story. | Jeep Wrangler Rock Raider by Hauk Design Posted: 22 May 2011 11:00 AM PDT The Jeep Wrangler is not only one of the most capable off road vehicles ever made, but also one of the most historically significant. The first Jeep vehicle to wear the Wrangler badge actually appeared in 1987, yet its roots go back to the 1941 Willy MB Army Jeep. That quarter ton vehicle carried the United States military through conflict after conflict essentially until invention of the HUMVEE. Today, the Wrangler remains a favorite amongst the off-roading crowd and tends to be heavily modified by many. The new 2011 Jeep Wrangler body has given this classic vehicle a new lease on life, especially as far as the interior goes. These off road behemoths can now become capable on the outside and full of comfort on the inside. Hundreds of parts and accessories companies exist for the Wrangler, but the most complete and radical designs have come from a young company by the name of Hauk Designs. If you have been in the off-road marketplace then the name River Raider Off Road may come to mind and this new full service company has come out of that. We recently spoke with Kenny Hauk of Hauk Designs and talked to him about the various models that the company now builds for its customers. He mentioned that the custom designed and fabricated parts that River Raider was building became so popular that his customers were asking to have their Jeeps completely built by the company. The current business plan features three distinct models each with a myriad of options to choose from. Hit the jump for more details on the Hauk Jeep Wranglers.
