| Ferrari Style Motorcycle Helmet by Newmax Posted: 28 May 2011 05:00 AM PDT If you had any more skepticism as to how far Ferrari has expanded its merchandising arm, look no further than this special edition Ferrari helmet courtesy of Newmax. Truth be told, the helmet isn't actually for racing purposes, but more so for safety while riding two-wheeled vehicles. Yep, you read that right. Ferrari is getting involved in the dirty and grimy world of scooters, bicycles, and motorcycles by introducing a special edition Ferrari Style helmet designed by no less than fashion icon Newmax. Ironically speaking, this particular helmet was designed as a tribute to Ferrari's historic Maranello tradition. Among the elements that make up this helmet include satin-finish aluminum and metalized thermoplastic details. The helmet has been dressed in a genuine leather trim with an embossed Ferrari logo providing the perfect finishing touch. Its outer shell is made from advanced thermoplastic polymer with a high gloss scratch-resistant finish while the visor is manufactured using injection molded scratch-resistant polycarbonate and offers excellent visibility in all conditions. Likewise, the helmet also comes lined with an anti-allergic and antistatic two-tone Dupont technical fabric just in case you might need it. The whole point of this Ferrari Style Helmet by Newmax is to give consumers the feeling of Italian stallion leather on their body without actually having to buy an actual car. Together with Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, the Italian automaker has produced countless of merchandising items, some more fit to their stature than others. When it comes to safety, though, Ferrari doesn't take a backseat to anybody, even if it means charging a price tag of €299, or about $420, for a motorcycle helmet. | Ferrari FXX crashes at Laguna Seca Posted: 27 May 2011 11:00 PM PDT The 2011 edition of the Ferrari Racing Days at Laguna Seca was supposed to be a fun day of merry-making amongst owners of the Prancing Horse. The weekend-long event featured a number of races involving cars from the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli, including that of the new 458 Italia, as well as the FXX and the 599 XX. Unfortunately, one owner of a rare Ferrari FXX didn’t have as good a weekend as his contemporaries after crashing his supercar out on the infamous ’Corkscrew’ section of the racetrack. While the damage doesn’t appear to be as serious as it should have been - FXX models are not meant for collisions - the dings and scratches are still noticeable enough to leave a pretty big dent in the owner’s wallet. He could probably still afford paying for the damage done to his street-illegal sports car, but for a vehicle that could fetch millions of dollars in the market, the owner of this FXX should probably take good care of his prized stallion the next time he takes it out on the race track. | Save Gas on Memorial Day Weekend Posted: 27 May 2011 01:00 PM PDT Many families choose to take road trips over long weekends, and with Memorial Day being this weekend, more people than ever will take to the open road. This can be quite the scary notion for two distinct reasons. For starters, gasoline is spiking at $4.00 per gallon which makes travel expensive even just across town. The second reason is that more and more drivers on the road seem to be getting their drivers license without having taken the test. I drive roughly 20 minutes each way to and from work in Southern California and to be honest, I fear for my life nearly every time. Between cell phones, eating, passengers, and plenty of other distractions, it is a very dangerous world. Hopefully these tips can help keep you be safe and thrifty over the holiday weekend. One way to temporarily increase fuel economy is by coasting to a stop. If you notice a light turn red in the distance - do not speed up just to stop short at the end. By letting the car coast as if it were in neutral you can boost gas mileage and save your brakes. The brakes on your car will ultimately bring you to a halt and keep your car from moving, but up until they are needed all they do is waste kinetic energy. Allowing your car to coast in stop and go traffic situations will allow the engine to work less, the brakes to work less, and will most likely cut down on those irritating false starts. | Has the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe been revealed? Posted: 27 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT Last year, at the Beijing Auto Show, BMW unveiled the Gran Coupe concept, an elegant 4-door vehicle that previewed the company's future Mercedes-Benz CLS competitor. Shortly after, the company announced it would be followed by a production version sometime in the first quarter of 2012. Now, a series of patent images have been revealed that illustrate what the production version may look like. Yes, you guessed it, it’s actually very similar to the concept. The new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe will be placed between the current 5 and 7-Series and will keep some of the features that made the concept so attractive at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year, including the frameless windows and B-pillar. We expect to see the same range of turbocharged six- and eight-cylinder engines, but an ActiveHybrid is also in the works. If these rumors are correct, we should expect a production version at the beginning of 2012, most likely at the Geneva Motor Show. | Posted: 27 May 2011 11:00 AM PDT Ford was becoming frustrated with the continuing success of Enzo Ferrari's racing machines. It came to a point that Henry Ford II was given an offer by Enzo to buy the company for an unheard of $18 million dollars. The buyout ended up falling through and Ford was left on its own to develop a racing team that could compete on the European circuits. Due to the non compete pact between American automakers, Ford knew it would have to look outside of its Dearborn, Michigan team for talent. To make a long story short, Ford took over a GT racing project from Lola, hired a prominent racing manager in John Wyer, and then designed the original GT40s to be raced in 1964. The story is much more complex than that, but the legend that would come from this humble beginning is much more important. The initial GT/101 chassis was essentially a loser and Ferrari continued to laugh while running away with victories. By 1965, Carroll Shelby was taken away from his Cobra projects and started developing the next generation of GT40 for Ford. This car gave Ford a win at Daytona in the first race of the very next year. Ford did develop several very special prototype cars including four roadster versions. Until recently, the GT/111 chassis was thought to have been destroyed long ago, but a chance find in London led to its discovery. Extensive restoration and consequential historic racing had finally brought it to the auction block at RM's Villa d'Este with a value estimated between $3,900,000-4,700,000. | BMW M3 GTRS3 Candy Cane by Vorsteiner Posted: 27 May 2011 10:00 AM PDT We have seen lots of tuning updates for the BMW M3, but this is without a doubt the sweetest interpretation of the sports car. Tuning firm, Vorsteiner, threw a little sugar on the M3 and calls it the "GTRS3 Candy Cane" because of its pure white exterior combined with striking red elements, including red side mirrors, wheels, bits of the bonnet, and the BMW logo. It’s not every day we see a red BMW logo, but we think the company will forgive the color swapping for this ride. Adding to the exterior look of the M3 is the new aerodynamic package. Vorsteiner strapped on a carbon fiber wide body conversion, a vented carbon fiber race hood, and a VRS carbon fiber boot lid. The lightweight titanium exhaust system and the new set of red V-309 Forged 5 Spoke wheels size 20" combined with Michelin PS2 Sport Tires 285/25/20 325/25/20 complete the look. A KW V3 EDC Coil over suspension system was also thrown in to absorb the bumps through CandyLand. As for the engine, Vorsteiner has created two different stages to boost power, but specifics have yet to be revealed. What we do know is that Stage II is ready to pump out up to 620 HP, which is a good 200 HP over the standard version.
