Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet concept

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Next to the Golf R Convertible Concept, Volkswagen also chose to unveil the Golf GTI Cabriolet concept at the Wörthersee Show 2011. This concept is a convertible variation of the Golf GTI, and although no details we given as to what will be found under the hood of the model, we expect to see the same 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI engine as found in the Golf GTI 35 Anniversary Edition, producing a total output of 235 HP.

Besides removing the roof in order to make the Golf GTI a convertible, this concept car also features a bespoke aero kit which includes a new front bumper, a GTI grille with red accents, a rear diffuser with a honeycomb grille and unique exhaust tail pipes on either side, a new front spoiler, extended wheel arches, and side sills. All of these features are painted in a piano black hue and offer an impressive contrast with the car’s red exterior paint. The final touch is given by a new set of five spoke alloy wheels.

Lexus LF-A II

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Japanese automakers seem to be unstoppable even after their country has been stricken by the horrendous natural disasters as of late. These ambitious companies are still plowing full steam ahead with even better versions of their vehicles. Recently, we reported on the 2013 Nissan GT-R and its impressive output of 560 HP, and now it seems as if Lexus is hard at work as well with a more powerful version of their LF-A supercar.

Rumors spinning the mill suggest that after all 500 units of the current LFA are sold, the company will bring out an even hotter variant of the existing model. It is not certain whether this will be a new generation LFA, but Japanese magazine, Best Car, is reporting it as the LF-A II. Whatever it is, the new LF-A will continue where the LF-A Nurburgring Edition left off by adding even more power and sportiness to the car. This would mean the new LFA will have more than 562 HP and will complete the 0-60 mph sprint in less than 3.7 seconds. Top speed should also exceed the Nurburgring model’s 210 mph.

BlueSport Concept sees production possibilities in Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Ever since Volkswagen unveiled the BlueSport concept at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, we’ve heard plenty "to be or not to be" rumors about a possible production version. Now we can finally confirm, without any doubts, that the Volkswagen Group will offer three different versions of this concept. Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen will each have their own version of the concept with different levels of sportiness and performance, butSkoda and Seat will be left out of the mix.

Starting with Audi, their production version will be inspired by the E-tron Spyder concept and will be offered with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-pot and 2.5-liter five-cylinder units, priced at around $45,000. The Porsche model will take its design cues from the iconic 1953 550 Spyder and will be offered with a twin-turbocharged engine with an output of about 380 HP. It is also believed that the Porsche model will be called the 550 as a tribute to the classic model. Prices will be in the $52K area. The Volkswagen model will, in fact, be the only version taking its design inspiration from the BlueSport concept. It will feature a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an output of about 170 HP. This will be the cheapest version with prices starting from around $30K.

The three models will stare the same platform, but their interiors will deliver different levels of luxury by featuring parts - such as instrument panels and dials - that are unique to each model. This type of differentiation was successful with the Q7, the Cayenne, and the Touareg SUVs so Volkswagen is sure to recreate that success with the three roadster models.

More details to come on Volkswagen’s three different production BlueSport Concepts, so stay tuned!

Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet Concept

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 06:30 AM PDT

Drop top concepts seem to be all the rage at this year’s Wörthersee Show, with a few different companies bringing their variations for all to see. Volkswagen’s contribution to the pack is their new Golf Cabriolet package, but applied to their more powerful Golf R variant. The jury’s still out on whether this concept will end up on the production line, but with an output of 266 HP, a top speed of 155 mph, and a 0 to 60 mph sprint of under 5 seconds, the Golf R Cabriolet Concept is the fastest open-top Golf ever.

The concept features the same treatment that was applied to the standard Golf R model, including a sport chassis that lowers the car’s ride by 25 mm, a 17-inch brake system with internally ventilated discs at all wheels, blue painted high-performance brake calipers, and 19" "Talladega" alloy wheels with size 235 tires. Then the vehicle gets its top ripped off to create a more wind-in-your-hair feel.

The interior gets shell seats in a dark blue carbon leather that is then combined with high-end Nappa leather in "Pure Grey." Other features include carbon fiber accents and sand-blasted aluminum door sill plates with black piano paint inlays.

Now this is a car we would like to drive on a hot summer day!

Lotus Evora

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

When Lotus announced that a production version Elan would never happen, they also announced that the next generation Evora would receive some aesthetic changes and new trim levels to align it with the rest of the "Lotus New Era" range. These things are typically better on paper then they are in practice, but a leaked image of the future model illustrates these exact predictions.

The new Evora is expected to debut in 2013 and it seems it will include no less than 150 changes compared to the current model. These changes were made in order to make the Evora a serious competitor for the Porsche models in existence. Lotus' ex-Ferrari design boss, Donato Coco, said that these changes were necessary to make up for the lack of aggression in the current model’s design. The next Evora will feature this added aggression, but will also continue the same design language that started with the Lotus 18 single-seater at the beginning of the 1960s.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for any more information on the future of the Evora so stay tuned!

Subaru FT-86

Car companies working together usually goes well. Of course, there are some instances when partnerships have gone wrong. The combination of Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz was the worse German-American partnership since Mr. Busch met Mr. Anheuser and developed that tasteless brew called Budweiser. Those keen TopGear watchers will know that’s not our joke, but it worked here anyways.

The same can be said of Daewoo and Chevrolet. Sure, they made some cheap cars, but they were just terrible. In fact, they might have set Chevrolet back a few years in Europe, due to cheapness image they still have.

We’re not sure if this is going to happen with Toyota and Subaru. Both of these companies are strong and create wonder vehicles that are fun to drive on one end and practical on the other. This combination might make for the best all-around Japanese entry-level sports car we have ever seen.

UPDATE 06/02/2011: Automotive News has unveiled new details on the Subaru FT-86 sports car set to be revealed later this year at the Tokyo Auto Show. Subaru expects a longer-than-average life cycle for the car and is looking at variant packages, including a possible STI version. However, while the usual STI models are all about being turbocharged, the FT-86 STI will keep the engine naturally aspirated. The sports car will be offered with the new generation 2.0-liter, four-cylinder boxer engine combined with manual or automatic transmission.

Porsche 911 GT3 RSR Flying Lizard

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 04:00 AM PDT

You know Le Mans season is fast approaching when teams set to compete in the legendary race are one by one introducing their 2011 racers to the public. One team that’s scheduled to participate in the 24-hour endurance race is Flying Lizard and today, the team officially unveiled a special edition livery for the No. 80 and No. 81 Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 RSR race cars that will compete in Le Mans. The livery, which was created by California-based artist Troy Lee, celebrates the rich and esteemed history of Porsche at Le Mans, highlighted by the 28 drivers that have won the world-famous endurance race while driving a Porsche.

Although the design is similar for both cars, they sport different color schemes - candy metallic orange for the No. 80 and candy metallic blue for the No. 81 - with the primary colors providing backdrop for the driver names and flags that weave throughout the design of the race car.

The 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR is powered by a 4.0-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine mated to a six-speed gearbox, producing an output of 455 horsepower at 7,800 rpm and a peak of 332 lb/ft of torque.

Ferrari FZ93 by Zagato

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Usually we get pretty excited when it comes to one-off models and this time is certainly no different. Back in 1993, Zagato unveiled the Formula Zagato ’93 (FZ93), which would be the main inspiration for the Ferrari Enzo 10 years later. The reason this information is relevant is because the Zagato is now on sale on Mobile.de for 1 million euro, or about $1,400,000 at the current exchange rates.

The Zagato FZ93 was designed by Ercole Spada, the same man who designed the legendary Aston Martin DB4 Zagato and the iconic Alfa Romeo 155. However, despite the fact that both the Alfa Romeo and the Aston Martin models featured impressive design language, the FZ93 is considered to be one of the ugliest Prancing Horses ever with its elongated and block-like nose and disproportionate rear end. The positive thing about this vehicle is its history and its flat 12 engine with an output of 428 HP at 6750 rpm and a peak torque of 362.1 lb-ft at 5500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox and sends the power to the rear wheels.

Video: Chevrolet Corvette hits 231 mph at Texas Mile

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

The quarter of a mile sprint may seem easy given the "simplicity" of driving a car flat out along a straight line, but as we’ve seen in the past at the Texas Mile event, it’s not as easy as it looks.

A few months after a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 crashed while attempting to hit 230 mph at Texas Mile, a new team called Late Model Racing brought their ridiculously tuned-up Chevrolet Corvette to the tarmac for a shot at the rarefied air of hitting that same 230 mph mark.

With a twin-turbo, 440-cubic-inch engine that produces 1,500 horsepower, LMR’s monstrous Corvette C6 nudged past its target speed, hitting 231 mph and doing it despite a 32 mph head wind.

While hitting their mark with a car that produces 1,500 horsepower seems easy on paper, we all know that it’s definitely easier said than done. Watching these guys hit 231 mph is definitely an impressive achievement, one that we feel they’ll try to break at the soonest possible time.

Porsche 911 / 991

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT

The 911 is the most successful model in Porsche’s history. It started its long history back in 1963 and since then Porsche has offered five distinct generations: 911 classic, 964 Series, 993 Series, 996 Series, and 997 Series. Moreover, the sixth one is already under intense testings and will make its official debut in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

It may be a little unorthodox for Porsche to be bringing out a new generation 911 despite the fact they just revealed a facelift version, but the requests keep changing and Porsche must answer the call of duty. Their latest target is improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The sixth generation 911, or the 998, will be a completely new vehicle, even though everyone will recognize it as a 911 model. Shortly after the launch of the 998 911, Porsche will also be releasing the Turbo, GT2, and GT3 in 2012.

UPDATE 06/01/2011: According to new details offered by Car And Driver, the next generation Porsche 911 will drop the current 6-speed manual gearbox and replace it with a seven-speed manual that will help to improve fuel-economy and reduce engine noise. The new gearbox will be derived from Porsche's seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic and will deliver the same shifting experience as the current tranny.

More details on the 2012 Porsche 998 911 after the jump.
