Get the 411 on Driving Techniques that could Save your Life

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Everyone remembers the year they got their license as a turning point in their adolescent life. From that point, there was no more waiting on relatives or older friends to take you where you needed to go because you now had the power in a little rectangular card that said you were legal. When I got my license, I remember my Driver’s Ed teacher telling me that a large percentage of teenage drivers will get into an accident within the first year of receiving their license. "Not me," I thought and went on my merry driving way. Eight months and a crashed front end later, I realized the old dude had been right.

What makes someone a good driver? For starters, one has to be completely aware of the rules and regulations governed by the law. That being said, experience and know-how play a huge part in learning techniques to be a safe driver. Getting behind that wheel and putting these into practice may ultimately save your life which is why we are showcasing an Expert Driving Techniques Infographics created by iMingle Insurance. This image (found in the gallery provided) will provide much of the information needed to stay safe on the roads starting with the four different types of drivers, such as the Novice (Hello teenager!), the Intermediate (Many men would put women in this category), the Expert (Men boost their egos by sliding themselves in here), and the Expert (Think Race Car Driver). After that, this image will deliver information to benefit drivers of any caliber on techniques of a well-prepared driver, anticipating an accident and planning on what to do if an accident occurs, steering techniques, the Roadcraft system, and controlling your vehicle.

It’s a longer read than usual, but it’s absolutely worth the time. Novice drivers may want to start at the beginning and read the whole thing, while Experts can head straight to the tips of controlling your vehicle.

Check back with us soon to find more interesting tidbits as part of our Car Infographics series.

Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

When Audi introduced seven concept versions of the A1 at the 2010 Wörthersee Tour in Austria, it marked the A1’s introduction into the world of show cars. This year, the German automaker won’t be bringing as many concepts to Austria - the site of this year’s tour - but they are bringing one that effectively blows away just about every Audi A1 we’ve ever seen before.

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro.

As a one-off show car, the A1 Clubsport Quattro is about the most powerful A1 we’ve ever laid our eyes on. Just how powerful is this vehicle? Try in excess of 500 horsepower under its hood. Yikes, indeed.

In addition to the monster engine under its hood, the A1 Clubsport Quattro was also designed as a preview model of the company’s new adhesive film decals that’s set to be released as future accessories for the A1 and all of its offspring models.

While we’d love to see this car out on the road - or the track, perhaps - in the future, it’s highly unlikely that it’s going to make it there considering its status as a one-off showpiece. But if the reaction to this car is what we expect it to be, we figure that Audi just may be tempted to get a production version out in the future. Unlikely, but hey, we can all dream, right?

UPDATE 06/03/2011: The Audi A1 ClubSport Quattro has been created officially for Need for Speed World fans and will only be available as a free in-game rental from June 1 until June 4, 2011. If you are interested in testing the car, log-in or register on Need for Speed World and go to the car dealer. Select Tier 2 and click on Audi for your 24 hour rental. Also, we have added a pretty cool video presenting the development of the car. Hit the jump to watch it.

Details on the Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro after the jump.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

It wasn’t that long ago when the first rumors for a more powerful Porsche 911 GT3 RS version began and now we have the official specifications for that model that map out a more powerful engine (duh) and improved aerodynamics. The vehicle will debut in July 2011 and prices will start at 178,596 euro including 19 per cent value added tax and country-specific equipment, or about $261,964 at the current exchange rates. Only 600 units will be made.

Details were so sketchy at first that we didn’t know if Porsche was for real, or just playing a really sick joke. Thankfully, this is as real as it gets with the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 utilizing a 4.0 liter engine producing an incredible 500 HP and 339 lb-ft of torque. This engine will be mated to a six-speed sports transmission optimized for low weight and high efficiency.

Weight is always an issue when wanting to make fast cars go faster, so Porsche made sure that was addressed with the GT3 RS 4.0. Many changes were made to the interior of the vehicle to drop weight, including the deletion of the air conditioning system and the addition of carbon fiber.

UPDATE 05/08/2011: The more powerful GT3 RS 4.0 has gotten even cooler with a new online configurator from Porsche. The new sports car gets options like carbon ceramic brakes, a front axle lifting system, lightweight headlamps, and a lithium-ion battery. Check out the configurator by clicking here.

UPDATE 06/03/2011: Porsche has unveiled a new image gallery of the coolest GT3 RS ever. Enjoy the new pics!

Electrodynamics Concept by Antonio Bruno Skips the Brand and Focuses on the Car

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Here’s another go-around into the future with yet another design study based on an electric sports car. The only difference is that this study wasn’t put together by students as a final project, but was designed by none other than Pagani interior/exterior designer, Antonio Bruno. His project, the Electrodynamics Concept, features a design made of unstructured volumes and, of course, an electric powertrain.

The Electrodynamics is much like any other sports car in that it has a very aerodynamic shape. That shape is then visually broken up by black and white exterior features and a set of futuristic wheels. When talking about the exterior design of the concept, Antonio Bruno said: "The absence of a brand reference has contributed to the free forms and is totally devoted to aerodynamic influences and perceptions typical of product design. The upper dome is formed from a tinted acrylic component that stretches up to the front bumper, where it could hide the additional headlights."

We can go on about the look of the car, but the real focus is the origin of power. The future is obviously in electric cars so this concept is destined to be powered by four permanent magnetic electric motors placed inboard and connected to the wheels via drive shafts. What these motors will do for performance times is obviously unknown at this point.

Whether we’ll actually see this independent design study out on the streets is highly doubtful. However, the redeeming factor of having designers who can come up with studies like this is that it gets everyone’s brains to churn out better and better ideas for the future and that is always a good thing.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Reifnitz

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:30 AM PDT

Volkswagen came at the GTI Treffen show in Worthersee with three impressive concept cars. But the most impressive Golf GTI in the show was one developed by Volkswagen Coaching in cooperation to APR. The model is called Golf GTI Reifnitz and develops an impressive 370 HP from the usual 2.0 TSI engine.

The model features a special paint design and an aero styling developed by the VW Coaching team. The interior is also extremely detailed, but the most impressive work was made under the hood. The team opted for an APR Stage III Turbocharger System, APR Intercooler and APR RSC Performance Exhaust. The result is an impressive 370 HP (an impressive update over the standard 215 HP) and a peak torque of 354 lbs-ft.

VW Coaching staff was available throughout the day to answer questions and when asked about power, a quick reach in the glove box brings a dynamometer certification chart of the power and torque delivered by APR's Stage III Turbocharger System.

Maserati Quattroporte by MR Car Design

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

We all know that the most important element of a tuning project hinges on whether the tuning company played around with the car's engine. Sure, aesthetic and aerodynamic modifications make for great eye candy, but for the most part, the joy still lies on what kind of powertrain upgrades are done on the car.

MR Car Design opted to go to this route with their latest upgrade for the suave and sexy Maserati Quattroporte. With a powertrain that features a 4.6-liter Ferrari V8 engine, MR Car Design gave the engine a software upgrade while also adding a new custom exhaust system, bumping up the luxury saloon's output from 400 horsepower and 339 lb/ft of torque all the way up to 430 ponies and 361 lb/ft of torque.

While the program doesn't have a whole lot of aesthetic and aerodynamic changes, the German tuner nevertheless gave it a few tweaks here and there, including tinted windows, new tail pipe designs, a set of adjustable H&R sport springs that lowered the ride height by 20 to 30mm, and a set of 22" Vossen alloy wheels wrapped in 245/30 R22 tires at the front and 295/25 R22 tires at the back.

For a car like the Maserati Quattroporte, sometimes subtle is the way to go. Of course, it's always a plus if the car's already powerful engine gets a bump up too.

Dallenbach Racing Team Pikes Peak Racer boasts of 1,307 horsepower

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

The 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is fast approaching - June 26th if you didn't know! – which means that we're going to be having plenty of time to talk about the cars that are scheduled to compete in the world famous race.

Of all the classes that are a part of the hill climb, the Unlimited Class is one of the most exciting, if only for the insane fact that it features cars that have one sole purpose in life: to break the 10-minute mark up to the top of Pikes Peak. Last year, only three racers entered the Unlimited Class, one of which being Paul Dallenbach.

This year, the Dallenbach Racing Team is – no pun intended – back for another go to break 10 minutes up the mountain, only this time they've got some help from Banks Power. Together, the two have prepared a car that now comes with a staggering 1,307 horsepower and 1,206 lb/ft of torque, a ridiculous spike in output from last year's model, which came with "only" 745 horsepower and 650 lb/ft of torque.

The insane addition of juice to Dallenbach's racer gives it as good a chance as anybody of finally breaking the sub 10-minute mark. If there's a car that can do it, we figure that it's going to be this 1,300-horsepower rocket.

Audi R8 GT Spyder

Posted: 17 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Okay, so this isn’t exactly the most surprising news of the day, but it sure ranks up there with the coolest. Audi is said to be launching a Spyder version for the R8 GT at the Frankfurt Motor Show this Fall. As with the coupe version, the Spyder will be limited to 333 units and should be priced at about $20,000 higher than the coupe, which is sold for about $196,800 in the U.S. The similarities will even extend to the number of units available in the U.S. We last heard that we were getting 90 units of the GT Coupe and we expect the same number for the Spyder version.

Under the hood, Audi will place the same 5.2 liter V10 engine that delivers a total of 560 HP and 398 lbs-ft of torque, but because of the soft-top, the future spyder version will only have a top speed of 193mph, 6mph less than the coupe. The added weight is obviously necessary, but does go away from Audi’s original weight-savings goal for the R8 GT. In order to achieve the 220 lbs weight loss for the Audi R8 GT Coupe, the company used a new carbon fiber liftback, a fixed rear wing, modified brake calipers, reduced engine-bay sound deadening, and a lighter windscreen. We expect them to provide similar treatment for the convertible version of the R8 GT.

UPDATE 06/03/2011: This review has been updated with the official details and images.
