Akrapovic Morsus Custom Chopper

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:15 AM PDT

Akrapovic has always been authority on exhaust systems, whether its with cars or motorcycles. Having crafted a reputation of being one of the best in the business, the Slovenian aftermarket company always gets the nod when brands are looking for top-of-the-line systems.

The most recent company to bring in Akrapovic is Dreamachine Motorcycles and together with its Slovenian compatriot, developed the mega powerful Morsus Custom Chopper.

With an attention-grabbing design that features, among other things, teardrop mirrors, 3D triple trees, and 26" carbon wheels, the Morsus Custom Chopper is most definitely a sight that can cure sore eyes. Add that with a drivetrain that carries a 1,852 cc S&S motor with Akrapovic’s modified exhaust pipe and you have a beautiful chopper that boasts of 114 horsepower.

"This project was a big challenge for me, said Tomaz Capuder, the man heading the project for Dreamachine Motorcycles. "I admire the work of Igor Akrapovi very much and I wanted to put together two motorcycle worlds, racing and custom. I followed also an idea of special cycle chrono bike on 26 inch wheels, which was quite challenging, but I'm quite happy with the final result as the body of the bike from many angles looks like a Scorpion."

With a bike like this, it should be a hot seller in the market, right? Unfortunately, despite its awesomeness, there’s still a catch - and a pretty big one at that: it’s not for sale.

Having said that, you can still keep tabs on this custom chopper as it participates in a variety of custom-oriented events for the year. It’s not as good as owning one, but hey, it’s still something to look forward to.

Car Infographics: Obama's Cadillac One is a Tank!

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Aspiring presidential candidates are already busy gearing up for the 2012 elections with hopes of becoming the most powerful man in the U.S. It’s a dirty job, but somebody has to do it, and luckily they have a presidential limo that can withstand the job.

At first glance, the Cadillac One just looks like a modified Cadillac DTS, but General Motors did not actually assign the presidential state car a specific model name. This may be due to the fact that it carries many different components from many different GM models, including Cadillac Escalade headlights, side mirrors, and door handles; Cadillac STS sedan taillights and back up lights; and what looks to be the GMC Topkick commercial truck’s chassis and driveline. GM went through a lot of trouble building the perfect presidential vehicle, but what happens to the car after the base build is what makes it capable of keeping our president utterly and unbelievably safe.

For starters, the car’s chassis has a 5" reinforced steel plate that runs underneath the car in case a bomb finds its way there. Then the entire bodywork is a combination of dual hardness steel, aluminum, titanium, and ceramic which breaks up projectiles upon impact. The doors and gas tank are armour plated, but the gas tank also receives a specially designed foam that prevents it from exploding. The tires are Kevlar reinforced and are shred and puncture resistant. If anyone successfully tears them apart, the steel rims underneath the tires will allow them to get the Cadillac One to safety.

The Cadillac One also has a number of accessories that enable it to solve problems quicker than they come around, including night vision cameras, pump action shotguns, tear gas cannons, and blood. Yes, that’s right. The Cadillac One is equipped with bottles of the president’s blood just in case he gets hurt and needs a blood transfusion. Take that, suckers!

Check back with us soon to find more interesting tidbits as part of our Car Infographics series.

After months of research, development, testing, and even more testing, James Glickenhaus’ Ferrari P4/5 Competizione is nearing its final stages as it prepares the finishing preparations for the 24 Hours of Nurburgring.

The car, which captured our attentions late last year, has undergone what can be considered a half-year’s worth of preparations and for our part, we’ve taken to meticulous lengths to give you any and all updates the team comes out with.

But now that the 24 Hours of Nurburgring is coming up at the end of the month - its scheduled for June 25 and 26 - all the preparations are finally coming to a head. So with just over 10 days remaining, the Glickenhaus team has unveiled the latest and maybe last set of updates of the P4/5 Competizione.

It’s a set of five videos that you can watch after the jump, giving us the first behind-the-scenes look at the development and testing of the car leading up to Nurburgring. Don’t expect any heart-pounding action with these videos, just a lot of mechanics working extra hard to give the car the best possible chance of competing at the Nurburgring.

BMW M5

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Just a few months before the car’s official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW has decided it was time to reveal the official specs on the fifth generation M5 sports sedan. After seeing the first concept version at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show, now we can see the M5 in all its glory. And we sure like what we are seeing.

The M5 name was used for the first time back in 1984, but since then, the car has evolved into an impressive sedan that combines track potential with the comprehensive practicality of a luxurious business sedan. The new generation brings a high-revving 4.4-liter V8 engine with an M TwinPower Turbo package that delivers an impressive 560 hp at 6,000 – 7,000 rpm and a peak torque of 502 lb-ft from 1,500 rpm. The model will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and, when the speed limiter is removed, is capable of hitting an impressive top speed of 190 mph. Despite these impressive performance numbers, the car will deliver an estimated fuel economy of 28.5 mpg.

UPDATE 06/15/11: This review has been updated with the full details and specifications on the new BMW M5. Hit the jump to find out more.

BMW Z4 by Kelleners Motorsport

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

We’ve been having plenty of tuning programs for the BMW Z4 recently, including two projects done by Japan’s 3D Design, including the ’Z4 for North America’.

Today, the BMW Z4 is once again front-and-center in the tuning world, only this time, the program comes courtesy of Kelleners Motorsport. Unlike the works made by 3D Design, which were largely based on aerodynamic improvements, Kelleners Motorsport offers the whole gamut of upgrades, including on the powertrain.

With a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine already under the hood of the Z4, Kelleners Motorsport gave it a jolting boost, raising the sports car’s output from 335 horsepower and 332 lb/ft of torque all the way up to a mighty impressive 400 horsepower and 398 lb/ft of torque.

In addition to the engine improvements, Kelleners Motorsport also dressed up the Z4 with a set of 19" and 20" Hamburg or Berlin rims, as well as a lowered ride height by 20mm at the front and 10mm at the rear. Inside, there’s also a new three-spoke sport steering wheel, aluminum pedals, velour floor mats, and bespoke interior finishes in leather with wood trims that can be requested as a customer order.

Mercedes-Benz has its eyes set on the record for the world's longest drift

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

One thing we ought to know about world records is that at some point in time, somebody’s going to beat them. It may not happen for a while, but sooner or later, there’s going to be someone - or something - that will eclipse it.

Currently, the record for the world’s longest drift sits on the mantle of Vaughn Gittin Jr’s study. The drift champion set the record back in December 18, 2008 with a run of 1,914.15 m (6,280.01 ft) at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas. It’s said that Gittin Jr. could have done longer had the threads on his tires not gotten completely eviscerated.

Fast forward to today and word has it that Mercedes-Benz is planning on besting Gittin Jr.’s record. The man for the job is Mercedes demonstration driver, Mauro Calo, who not only wants to break the record the same way Gittin Jr. did when he broke the previous record of 4,137 feet, but wants to reach 10,000 feet, which is a little under two miles long.

While the task seems to be far easier said than done, Calo is confident that the record will be his after his attempt at Surrey, England while using either a Mercedes C63 or E63 AMG. Calo’s attempt will be made exceptionally more difficult considering that he plans to attempt it on a perimeter track that’s barely ’as wide as a car length’.

No timetable has been set on when this attempt will take place, but seeing as news of it is going around, we won’t be surprised if it takes place before the year ends.

Whatever the case may be, we’ll be sure to give updates when the day for the record-setting attempt draws near.

Mercedes C63 AMG WhiteStorm by Romeo Ferraris

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

The Mercedes C63 AMG is a car that is seemingly perfect straight from the factory, so providing it with a tuning package didn’t exactly make much sense. Then we came across this tuning package from Italian tuner, Romeo Ferraris, and our minds were changed instantly. The new Mercedes C63 AMG WhiteStorm received a number of changes covering every aspect of the vehicle, and the result is nothing short of breathtaking.

With a name like the WhiteStorm C63 AMG, anyone can surely imagine that the vehicle would come in white. In fact, it comes covered in a matte white finish with a contrasting black grille, black fog light surrounds, front spoiler side vents, and a black diffuser. The contrasting color is also added in with a new set of black wheels in a five-spoke design. The exterior package is finished by a carbon fiber roof and a trunk lid lip.

For the interior, the tuner is offering sports seats covered in red leather for that extra pop of color. The red is also present on the steering wheel, door panels, arm rest, and gear shifter. The rest of the interior is black.

Strong and vibrant colors such as the ones that were used can only be truly appreciate with some extra power under the hood. Romeo Ferraris addresses that with a revised ECU mapping for the Mercedes’ 6.2 liter V8 engine and a completely new exhaust system with metal catalysts to 200 cells and four end pipes. These changes result in an additional 79 HP for a total of 536HP and an extra 59 lb-ft of torque.

Video: Rhys Millen prepares for 2011 Pikes Peak Hill Climb

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Last year, Rhys Millen was set on breaking the 10:01.408 record set by Nobuhiro Tajima and his Suzuki XL7 Hill Climb Special in the "Race to the Clouds." Unfortunately, Millen did not succeed, but he is back again and more determined than ever to break the 10-minute barrier at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with his Red Bull-sponsored Hyundai Genesis RMR PM580. This vehicle has undergone some modifications and upgrades and, with the new tarmac portions of the course, Millen is well on his way to achieving his goal.

However, Rhys Millen isn’t the only Millen in the bunch hoping to break records. Rod Millen will also be on hand at the event, ready to break the record set by his son in the Time Attack 2WD class. Rod will actually be driving an updated version of the Red Bull Hyundai Genesis Coupe that Rhys set the class record in two years ago. Rod Millen is already a Pikes Peak pro with five overall race wins and eight class wins, but we can only imagine that having a son who currently holds a record in an event his father has dominated in the past can only bring about some healthy competition between the two.

Here’s to great success for both Millen men as they attempt to break records at this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb!

Ducati 1098 and 1198 "Kill Me Fast" Collection by Kristian van Hornsleth

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 12:15 PM PDT

Over the years, Ducati has built a pristine reputation as one of the best motorcycle manufacturers in the world. They're expensive as heck, too, but that's besides the point. The point here is that it doesn't take a lot to make a Ducati bike an eye-catcher, but if you're really trying to hit for the fences and going a tad overboard is an open option, then maybe you'll find these special edition 1098 and 1198 Ducati bikes suitable for your palette.

Designed by Danish artist, Kristian van Hornsleth, these special edition bikes have been dressed up in 10 unique – and that's saying it lightly –paint schemes, all of which fall under Hornsleth's "Kill Me Fast" series.

We don't know how appropriate the name is given that these machines are about as close to a death ride for the reckless as it can get– a 0-60 mph time of under three seconds and a top speed of 198.8 mph does that to you – but considering the meticulous detail and flashiness of the designs, there's something mysteriously alluring about these bikes.

Not that we can afford one, but hey, we can settle for everything short of actually buying one, including needlessly looking at the photos far longer than we should. Check them out and you might end up doing the same.
