Kia Roadster

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

In the past few years, Kia’s success on the market has increased significantly with models like the SOUL and the Forte becoming leaders in their segment. Taking this under consideration, it’s no wonder that the Korean manufacturer is expanding their market - which as of now consists of coupes, sedans, crossovers, and SUVs - to include a small roadster. The Kia Roadster - name unknown - will set out to compete against one of the only lower end roadsters on the market: the Mazda MX-5.

The new Kia Roadster will weigh no more than 2200 lbs and will come with a rear wheel drive system. Engine specifications are not exact, but we should be getting about 200 HP out of a turbo petrol engine. About a year after the Kia debuts, we should also be seeing a Hyundai version of the same vehicle. Think along the lines of the relationship between the Toyota FT-86 and Scion FR-S.

The path has been set, but don’t expect this sporty model to show up anytime before 2013; building a model that will be "fun, dynamic and addressed to young buyers" will surely take some time.

Lamborghini Gallardo supperlegera twin turbo cruising Miami streets - without rear bumper

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 08:24 AM PDT

When we caught this Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera driving in Miami without rear bumper, we felt for the poor owner and his damaged toy. But as we were getting closer, we realized that the missing rear bumper was in fact a pretty cool way to show off its bi-turbo chromed internals.

The car was pretty driving slowly and we soon realized that it was on its way to a car show, but still pretty cool way to show of your Gallardo turbos.

Check the video for a taste of the turbocharged engine.

The History of Drifting

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Just like everything else, the history of drifting has spurned many different versions, some more likely than the other. Pinpointing exactly where it began is as easy as finding a needle in a haystack, especially when you consider that, technically, the technique of drifting has been around since about the mid-1950s.

What we do know about its origin is that the Japanese played a very important role in ushering the technique’s popularity, so much so that it has become one of the most popular forms of automotive competition. Unlike other forms of ’racing’, drifting is different in that it’s not so much about who comes in first as it is about who can smoke their tires the most.

In a drifting competition, the most important things are line, angle, speed, and show factor. For the uninitiated, the line is pre-determined by judges before a competition with the drifters scoring points based on whether they take the correct line. The angle is the angle a car takes during a drift. The speed is determined by the speed of the car as it enters a turn, the speed through a turn, and the speed exiting the turn. Needless to say, as with any other competition involving high-powered cars, the faster a car goes around a turn, the rosier he smells in front of the judges. Then there’s the show factor, which, in essence, is arguably the most important part of drifting. This involves, among other things, the amount of smoke the tires burn, how a car navigates around a track in the most daredevil of ways, and how the crowd reacts to the driver’s performance.

That being said, from all that we know and enjoy about drifting these days, it’s equally important for us to learn about how this sport came to be. From humble beginnings in the Land of the Rising Sun to the worldwide phenomenon that it is today, drifting has become a popular sport for millions of fans who take great satisfaction in watching smoke come out of tires.

Head past the jump to find out more about the history of drifting.

Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Rumors about a Mercedes SLC-Class started awhile back and for s short period of time, it was believed that the new SLS AMG would be called the SLC. Obviously, this is not the case, but hopes for an SLC are still not lost as Mercedes will indeed offer the SLC in an unexpected package.

The SLC-Class will actually be the baby brother of the SLS and will be set to attack models like the Porsche 911. Compared to the SLS, the future SLC will be lighter and slimmer with the use of plenty of carbon fiber and aluminum. In a shocking twist of SLS insult, the SLC will be devoid of gullwing doors. As for the engine, the future Mercedes SLC will come with two different options. The first will be a twin turbo V6 producing 350 HP and the second will be a V8 engine with an output of 500 HP.

The less dramatic specifications of the Mercedes SLC have also given way to a cheaper price tag compared to that of its brother. Expect to pay somewhere under 100,000 Euro, or about $145,000 at the current exchange rates.

As a reminder, the SLC name was first used as a market name for the Mercedes C107 from 1971 to 1981. These vehicles were sold in three different versions - 280, 380 and 500 SLC - and were powered by either an inline-6 engine or a V8 for the top versions. The name, SLC, is expected to be revived sometime in 2014.

Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C: The world's largest engine

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

In a world where cars are held in high regard depending on how powerful their engines are, we sometimes lose perspective on the strength and might of these bad boys. A Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, considered the fastest car on the planet, carries an 8.0-liter W-16 engine that produces 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 lb/ft of torque with a world record top speed of 268 mph.

Put that against the Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C, however, and the supposedly almighty Veyron’s powertrain is reduced to nothing more than a go-kart engine. You see, the Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C carries the distinction of being the world’s largest engine. How large is ’large’, you ask? For starters, each of the 14 cylinders it carries has a displacement of 111,143 cubic inches, which is about 1,820 liters, producing 7,780 horsepower. And that’s just one.

Add up all 14 cylinders and you have a total displacement of 1,556,002 cubic inches - that’s 25,480 liters - with a maximum power of 108,920 horsepower at 102 rpm and a peak torque of 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102 rpm.

More details after the jump.

Mini JCW Eagle by AC Schnitzer

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

The mad car tuning scientists over at AC Schnitzer in Germany have apparently been working on a secret project based on the Mini Cooper John Cooper Works that transforms the cute little car into the fastest Mini JCW ever. Apparently, in the company’s latest testing, the racing Frankenstein pulled off a sensational lap time of 1:13.341 min. around the Hockenheim Circuit. Okay, so it still can’t beat the KTM X-Bow, the BMW M3 Kompressor, the Mercedes AMG, or the Caterham models, but the power boost was enough to bump it into the next class and leave its class rivals behind.

The AC Schnitzer Eagle, or "little rocket," is able to up its performance from a standard 211 HP to 260 HP with the use of a new turbocharger and intercooler, a new sports clutch, a limited slip differential, a lightweight ion battery, and AC Schnitzer’s Motronic program. Then a stainless steel exhaust system with racing catalyst, a new racing suspension, and a ’Short Shift’ transmission were thrown in to round off the technical specifications. The power modifications allow the Mini Cooper JCW to sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds (down from 6.5) with a top speed of 155mph (up from 148mph).

Aesthetically speaking, the Mini Cooper JCW had to be made meaner with the use of anti-roll bars, a carbon fiber body kit, a carbon bonnet, carbon wings and doors, and a new set of 18" wheels.

AC Schnitzer has valued to Eagle at EUR62,000, or about $88,600 at the current rates, but don’t whip out those wallets just yet; this car isn’t for sale.

The $500,000 Cars-In-Your-Garage Game

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Here at Topspeed, we love to keep our readers as involved in our pieces as possible and we figured there was no better way to do that than by engaging in a good ’ol hypothetical game of "Car-In-Your-Garage." Okay, so the game is completely made up, but it’s still something that gets us in the mood to think of five cars we’d love to have in our garages. As with any other game of this magnitude, though, there are some rules that we need to follow:

First, the price total of all five cars combined should not exceed $500,000. Second, at most you can only pick up to two supercars. Third, you need to have FIVE cars on your list in the interest of variety and back-and-forth discussion. Fourth, you don’t have to hit the $500,000 limit exactly. If you’re happy with $300,000 worth, then that’s your call. You’ll be wasting $200 grand in fake money, but who’s really counting, right?

Once you’ve figured out your list, indulge all of us and put it down in the comments section below. If you feel the need to explain why you picked the car, feel free to elaborate.

Happy fake car shopping everyone!

Check out my list after the jump.

Porsche Vorsteiner 997 Turbo Project 650 HP by Autodynamica

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of tuning projects circling the automotive industry at any given time. Some are extensive, offering a complete package to transform the vehicle into a new and improved model, and others only offer minor adjustments to slightly tweak the car’s look. The latter group are the ones that can always benefit from some additional attention. Turns out, American tuner, AutoDynamica, share our sentiments as they have taken the Porsche 997 Turbo by Vorsteiner and added certain elements to complete its package.

Vorsteiner started off the 997 Turbo’s transformation with dry carbon fiber vacuum technology. This technology allows for a stronger and stiffer bodykit that is also 40% lighter than the components used in the standard model. The newly redesigned front bumper cover is made of carbon fiber composite (CFRP) and there are also an add-on carbon fiber chin spoiler and larger duct openings. The back of the Porsche gets a new rear bumper and a 997.2 tail light conversion.

And then there’s the power. A standardPorsche 997 Turbo is one of the most powerful models on the market. With 500 HP and a top speed of 194 mph, the 997 Turbo certainly sets the stage for the competition, but AutoDynamic’s AWE 650S performance package takes it to the next level. This package adds an AWE exhaust system, AWE headers in stainless steel, AWE upgraded intercoolers and proprietary GIAC tuning software which bumps up the power output to 650 HP! Throw in a new set of performance wheels with a race inspired look and a new set of PSS10 Coilovers from Bilstein to lower the car’s ride, and you now have that complete package we discussed earlier.
