| Lamborghini leans on Porsche to help build SUV model Posted: 23 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT Wince, Get Angry, Exhale, Shrug, Accept. These were the actions taken by many sports car lovers when their devoted automakers began falling off the wagon and building SUVs. It was only a short time ago that b>Lamborghini confirmed a production Estoque, but denied plans for building an SUV. Now, the Italian automaker is getting into bed with the brand that started it all to build an SUV of their own. According to British magazine, AutoExpress, Lamborghini is teaming up with fellow Volkswagen Group brand Porsche to develop their first SUV partly because they know it’s a market Ferrari can’t get into. "Ferrari can't follow into this market, because it has no links to SUVs at all. Lamborghini is entirely credible as an SUV maker, but it can't do it alone. And as Porsche has shown it already knows how to do it, it makes sense to work together." This means that the future Lamborghini SUV will be built on Porsche's latest GT architecture which will also be used for the new generation Bentley models. Lamborghini will also use this platform in an attempt to make the Estoque a global model. Thankfully, the company’s supercars will remain in-house developed models with no help from outsiders. Good thing they cleared that up; wouldn’t want to think they were selling out completely. | Posted: 23 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT Now that the 2011 installment of the legendary 24 Hours of Nurburgring is upon us, participating automakers are slowly coming out of the woodwork with the presentation of their endurance race cars. For their part, Volkswagen has developed a high-powered race-spec version of one of its most popular models. Called the Golf24, Volkswagen’s entry to the 24 Hours of Nurburgring will be a four-wheel drive and will carry a 2.5-liter, five-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 440 horsepower and 398 lb/ft of torque mated to a sequential six-speed transmission with paddle shifters. "With the new Golf24 we are continuing our successful commitment at the Nürburgring 24-hour race," said to Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "The event enjoys huge popularity, is one of the true classics in motorsport and, due to its extreme distance and unique race track, also represents a very big technical challenge." There’s no doubt the Volkswagen Golf24 will have its hands full at the day-long endurance race this weekend, but if there’s a brand that can steal the show at Nurburgring, we wouldn’t bet against one of the biggest auto brands in the world. The fact that they have a car that poises a threat to its competitors makes them all that more dangerous come race time. There’s another video of the Golf24 doing some test runs at the ’Ring after the jump. Volkswagen Golf24 originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 23 June 2011 15:00 EST. |
| McLaren Squares off with Lamborghini and Ferrari; 13 new models planned Posted: 23 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT McLaren is winding up for the pitch and ready to hit one out of the park against fellow rivals, Ferrari and Lamborghini. Not only is their newest supercar - the MP4-12C - sold out for the next three years, but the British manufacturer is also planning to invest as much as $1 billion in developing and marketing a range of sports cars. In a recent interview, Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive's managing director, said that the company plans to unveil 13 models and variants in the coming years. The company is also planning to open 35 dealerships worldwide this year, including nine in the U.S. This plan has already been put into place with the opening of the new Hyde Park London boutique showroom just this week. The development of the MP4-12C cost the company about $320 million and it was followed by a track version, the GT3. Next, we’ll get a Spyder version which will be launched next year and a "baby" model that will take on models like the Porsche 911. That’s a total of four models, so the other nine are still hidden in the bull pen. We’re assuming we will also see a Spyder and Racing version of the future "baby" model as well. Two more down, seven to go. McLaren Squares off with Lamborghini and Ferrari; 13 new models planned originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 23 June 2011 14:00 EST. |
| Aston Martin Cygnet & colette Limited Edition Posted: 23 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT The automotive and fashion world collide quite a bit to make some of the coolest, albeit expensive, vehicles for the uber elite. The latest collaboration between the two is Aston Martin’s "Cygnet & colette" model built in conjunction with Parisian fashion authority, colette. The special edition will only be built in a limited run of 14units, each hand-crafted via the company's ultimate personalization service. The price? A staggering €48,995 ($69,325 at the current rates) compared to the £30,995 ($43,856 at the current rates) of the standard Cygnet. Something tells us the extremely limited number was a good idea. The Cygnet and collette will be painted in a Lightning Silver paint with exclusive colette blue styling details, including a race collection inspired front bumper and bonnet livery, mirror caps, and diamond turned road wheels. The silver of the exterior is being combined with a Bitter Chocolate themed for the interior. Next to these special colors, the limited edition Cygnet will also get an onslaught of features, including stainless steel hand formed and engraved door handle badges and "Cygnet & colette" branded hand enameled boot badging manufactured by Thomas Fattorini. The city car will also receive quilted Alcantara sun visors to complement the quilted leather door and seat inserts and hand trimmed, quilted colette blue leather occasional cushions for the rear seats. Other notable features include "Cygnet & colette" branding on satellite navigation start up and a unique "Cygnet & colette" key ring machined from solid aluminum with blue enameling. | MINI John Cooper Works Coupe Endurance Posted: 23 Jun 2011 01:34 AM PDT How long has it been since MINI first unveiled the John Cooper Works Coupe? Yeah, it was only a few days ago, but that hasn’t stopped the German automaker from making a race-spec version of their latest pride and joy to compete at the "SP 3T" class of the 2011 24 Hours of Nurburgring. So, ladies and gentlemen, we’re presenting the MINI John Cooper Works Coupe Endurance Racer. Take a good look at it in all its shiny and sparkling glory because there’s a good chance that it’s going to be a little worse for wear after it attempts to run for 24 hours straight together with some of the fastest racers on the planet. Apparently, MINI has taken itself to task in entering the 24-Hour race at Nurburgring in an attempt to take the next step in auto racing after years of plying its craft in the MINI Challenge sprint race. You might also recall that MINI is also entering the World Rally Championship this year with their sand and dust challenger, the Countryman WRC. Something tells us that this won’t be the last time we’ll see MINI enter a completely new racing event that’s different from what they’re used to, but that’s getting ahead of ourselves. For now, we’re here to talk about their Nurburgring steed, the JCW Coupe Endurance. More details on the MINI John Cooper Works Coupe Endurance after the jump. | Is the Goodwood Festival of Speed headed to China? Posted: 23 Jun 2011 04:00 AM PDT China has been a boon for the auto industry recently, having established itself as the biggest market in the entire world. It seems that everyone is headed to China in varying capacities and now, there’s word going around that one of the world’s most prestigious auto events is looking on taking its annual showcase to the East. Known for being the Moving Motor Show for its propensity to have its auto displays moving out and about its grounds, the Goodwood Festival of Speed is unlike any other show in the calendar for this unconventional yet extremely fantastic approach. Now, there are whispers going about that Lord Charles Gordon-Lennox, the Earl of March, and the man behind the Festival of Speed, is looking into having the same kind of event in China. According to AutoExpress, the Earl of March himself recently paid a visit to the People’s Republic to meet with Chinese representatives with the proposal of staging a Festival of Speed type event in China. More to that, Lord Gordon-Lennox also invited a delegation of Chinese representatives to the Goodwood Festival of Speed later this month. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that these developments all point to something brewing underneath. Could it be that these will pave the way for a Chinese edition of the Festival of Speed in the near future? Given the industry’s fast-growing affinity for the most populated country in the world, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Festival of Speed finds its rolling event to the Far East in the not so distant future. | Posted: 23 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT Jaguar’s long rumored XE model is finally making its way towards production as confirmed with the newest spy shots of the small roadster. First thought to be dropped due to struggling sales, the XE project has been seen spot testing with almost zero camouflage, and we like what we see. The retractable hard top that was first thought to featured on the XE is obviously vacant, and a soft top can be found in its place. This, as well as the rest of the design language, falls in line with all of the latest Jaguar models. The Roadster will be built on the same platform as the XK, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see the same package from the XKR-S in the upcoming model. As for the engine lineup, the XE will feature a range of V6 engines, and a V8 for the top R version. Expect the new XE model to be launched sometime next year as a direct competitor for models like the Porsche 911. Jaguar XE originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 23 June 2011 10:00 EST. |
| Alfa Romeo gearing up for US invasion at the 2013 NAIAS Posted: 23 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT Alfa Romeo fans in the US have a lot to be excited about because the long-awaited return of the Italian brand in American soil is drawing closer and closer. Now, according to Autobild, the stage for Alfa’s return to America could take place at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Autobild is also reporting that Alfa Romeo is intent on bringing at least five models to the 2013 NAIAS, highlighted by the drop-dead gorgeous 4C GTA Concept. Together with the 4C GTA, other Alfa Romeo models expected to join in the US invasion include the Giulia, the Giulietta, the five-door MiTo, and a still unidentified Jeep-based crossover. We’ve all anxiously waited a long time for Alfa Romeo to return to our neck of the woods and it certainly hasn’t come with some impatience. But now that it’s beginning to look like the Italian brand is in fact US-bound after years and years of absence, that impatience and anxiety is slowly becoming excitement and eager anticipation. | Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution XI Posted: 22 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT The Evo-loving world was in shambles after Mitsubishi Global Product Director, Gayu Eusegi, announced that the company would be killing off the all-wheel-drive turbocharged Lancer Evolution. The Evo is one of the best models Mitsubishi has ever offered and fans everywhere were shocked that the company would take such extreme measures. A few back pedals later and Mitsubishi President and CEO, Osamu Masuko, calmed the waters by stating that the the Evo X would not be the last of the Evolutions. Now, Masuko has offered even more details for the future of the Evo to Japanese magazine, Best Car, stating that "Mitsubishi is fully intent on producing a high-performance car in the future, albeit green." Yeah, join the club, Masuko. The rumor has long been that the Evo XI would be a diesel-electric hybrid. Such a powertrain would allow the Evo XI to hustle to 0-60 MPH in under 5 seconds while still receiving better fuel economy than the current Evo. Now, it seems the technology that was unveiled in the PX-MiEV concept at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show is looking to fit itself into the EVO XI. This would mean a 1.6- liter gasoline engine combined with an electric motor that will take its power from a set of lithium-ion batteries. The electric motors will power the vehicle at low to middle speeds, while the engine will kick on at high speeds. The engine will also provide back up for the motors when their charge runs low. The hybrid system will be combined with Mitsubishi's S-AWC all-wheel-drive system and active yaw control, technologies that have already been used in the Evo X.
