| Porsche Panamera Styling Package by Kahn Design Posted: 24 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT Kahn Design has a thing for sticking to certain models until they have provided a number of solutions to the standard look. Their focus is usually on improving the overall look for the exterior and interior of the vehicle and we can’t think of a time when this British tuning firm has failed us. Earlier this year, they provided the world with their RS600 package for the Porsche Panamera that brought out the sportier and more aggressive side to the sports sedan and now a second package is rolling out of their grounds. This time, styling is the only focus with the result being a lower, longer, and wider Panamera. The overall bigger look of the Panamera begins with the wheels found on the previously mentioned RS600 package. These wheels cement the stance of the Panamera, which is then accentuated by a 10 piece wide-arch kit, rear roof spoiler, and front and rear air dams. Further styling is provided with integrated front LEDs with vents. Inside the luxury sports sedan is a customary blend of leather, carbon, and wood. In a sports sedan that already features a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 300 horsepower and 295 lb/ft of torque, it’s the small styling additions such as the ones provided by Kahn that can truly polish it off just right. | Posted: 20 May 2011 12:00 PM PDT Now, we know we have already seen two concepts- FT-86 and FT-86 II - for this vehicle, but will have to endure one more as Toyota has brought us yet another FT-86 concept. This time it has been revealed at the New York Auto Show under the Scion badge and it won't go into production until Toyota finally brings their production version later this year at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Scion FR-S Concept is a preview version of a new model coming to the Scion brand next year. "Scion is always experimenting with new things," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. "The brand is iconic with the xB, adrenalized by the tC, and groundbreaking with the iQ. The FR-S will expand the brand into yet another new dimension that I know it is truly destined for." Like with the other Toyota model, the Scion model is being inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning "8-6" in Japanese. The concept is being built on a rear-wheel-drive platform and is powered by a 2.0-liter boxer front engine that can be mated with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. UPDATE 04/28/2011: Toyota has revealed a new video showing off the Scion FR-S concept’s revving engine. The sound should be the same or very similar for all three Scion FR-S / Toyota-Subaru FT-86 cars since they will all feature the same Boxer engine and exhaust setup. Hit the jump for the video. UPDATE 05/20/2011: Testing is still underway for the Scion FR-S, and while it was circling the track, spy photographers were able to get a shot of the newly fitted and massive wing attached to the back. Seems a little exaggerated to us, but hey, we’ve waited so long to see this car in action that we will take just about anything they throw at us at this point. Check out the video after the jump. | Bentley Continental GT with Mulliner Styling Specification Posted: 24 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT Usually when a new car is released, tuning companies are just foaming at the mouth to create a tuning package that will transform the look of the vehicle. This time, Bentley has beaten the tuning firms to the punch by releasing a brand new feature created especially for the Continental GT. The "Mulliner Styling Specification" was created by Raul Pires, Head of Exterior Design at Bentley, to give customers the opportunity to fit their luxury coupe with a range of exterior styling options. "The Mulliner Styling Specification, with its sharper lines and darker, lower appearance subtly underscores the extrovert, flamboyant nature of our new Coupe. It delivers a more personalized, sportive interpretation of a luxurious, refined GT," said Raul Pires, Bentley's head of exterior design. The new Mulliner Styling Specification comes in a Classic Pack, along with a few additional design options to tweak your Bentley. Prices for the exterior modifications have yet to be announced. | Posted: 24 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT Lexus struck it big with the Royal Wedding when it was announced that Prince Albert of Monaco would be riding in an LS 600H for the royal affair. The experience must have been exquisite for the Prince because Lexus has created a Landaulet version of the hybrid for him to ride in with his future wife, Miss Charlene Wittstock, during their very own wedding. The Lexus LS 600h Landaulet will be a one-off coach built limousine equipped with a one-piece transparent polycarbonate roof. This roof took about 2,000 hours to be completed with the help of a French company that specializes in supplying similar components to the aerospace industry, such as helicopter windscreens and fighter jet canopies. The building process was extensive because a honeycomb structure and carbon fiber template was created first to validate the roof's shape and structural integrity and to ensure a perfect fit with tolerances of less than 1mm. Once the design was complete, robotic tools were used to produce the canopy and fit it to the Landaulet in a completely automated process. The final stage of the conversion, re-assembly, and finishing took a team of 10 specialists working with Lexus engineers more than two weeks to complete, to ensure the highest quality levels were achieved. The final product is a roof that is just 57 lbs and is fixed to the body through two intermediary parts which allow for a perfect view in and out of the car. Check out the Lexus Landaulet and the second royal wedding this year on July 2nd! Lexus LS 600h Landaulet originally appeared on topspeed.com on Friday, 24 June 2011 14:00 EST. |
| Car Infographics: The Pikes Peak Course Posted: 24 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT The 89th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is just around the corner and we couldn’t think of a better to prepare for the race than to read up on the racers ready to take on the challenge and take a close look at the Pikes Peak course. The annual ’Race to the Clouds’ challenges automobiles and motorcycles alike to navigate their way up Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This course is about 12.42 miles long with 156 turns for drivers to brave during their ascent on grades averaging 7%. The race begins at 9,390 feet and ends at the mountain's 14,110-foot summit above Colorado Springs for a total climb of 4,720 ft. This year, 194 racers from ten different countries will test their driving skills on the dirt and paved roads of Pikes Peak with the hopes of getting top billing in their respective classes. The most anticipated race will be that of the Unlimited Class where there are no restrictions and some of the fastest machines on the planet are put to the test to see which one can go up the mountain faster. Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima, Rhys Millen, and Paul Dallenbach are just a few of the racers in this class that are prepared to go balls to the wall to break the 10-minute barrier and the standing record of 10:01.408 achieved by Tajima back in 2007. Will they succeed? Only time will tell, but prepare yourself for the race by taking a look at the course in detail. Who knows, maybe it’ll inspire a trip to Colorado to watch the action live. | Posted: 24 Jun 2011 04:15 AM PDT Jeep isn’t exactly famous for building motorcycles. In fact, we don’t think we have ever heard of a Jeep motorcycle, but what if the rugged off-road SUV maker decided to go against the grain? Kyle Robie tried to answer this question with the Jeep Cross Bike - a motorcycle designed for both on and off-road use in 2025. The Jeep Cross Bike features a hydroelectric powertrain, with the electric motor acting like a compressor for the accompanying hydraulic pump. This system will inject enough fluid to both the wheels, delivering the rider more of an adrenaline rush. The battery pack is easily accessible in the storage compartment under the seat and features 7 bars placed on the side: three on the side of the battery and four on the seat. Its location makes for a quick exchange when a new, fully charged battery is needed. The headlights feature indicator lights on the front, while turn signals come embedded in the front mirrors. The swing arms were designed to bump out just a bit to maintain a good balance. The design of the motorcycle is a little unorthodox, but just adds to the splendor of the bike, making it a real head turner. | Audi TT GT Coupe by Kahn Design Posted: 24 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT It was only a month ago that Kahn Design unveiled the TR8 - an Audi TT inspired by the R8 sports car. Now the tuner is releasing another package called the TT GT that promises a more powerful driving experience. It still involves an Audi TT dressed up like an R8, but this time the tuner focused on replicating the R8 GT. The Audi TT was redone with new front and back vented bumpers with mesh inserts and a new front grille that mirror the ones found on the R8. The R8 style side blades and billet steel finish door mirrors that are instantly recognizable on the R8 were also put in to transform the TT, as were the rear spoiler and stainless steel quad exhaust system. The modifications continue on the interior with a Kahn Speedo, rev counter, and ivory quilted leather interior with red stitching. So far this tuning kit has followed the same pattern as Kahn’s previous package, but they did promise a better driving experience so more was definitely added. The Audi TT GT was hooked up with sports lowered suspension springs, a front lower bumper lip in billet steel finish, and a new set of 20 -inch RSV alloy wheels. So, if you have an Audi TT and are thinking of upgrading, an R8 look-a-like would most certainly be the way to go. For an extra £19,875 - or about $31,750 at the current exchange rates - you too could be driving an R8. Well, sort of. | Posted: 24 Jun 2011 02:15 AM PDT Erick Buell was once a bigwig at Harley Davidson, having served the role of head engineer and designer of Buell Motorcycles. But when Harley decided to part ways with the sub-brand, Buell likewise left as well, opting to run his namesake brand on his own. For those wondering how Buell would fare without the financial muscle of Harley Davidson behind him, those questions have been answered with the launch of the company’s new superbike, the unconscionably gorgeous 1190RS. Defying all the naysayers that said that it couldn’t be done, the 1190RS is a living testament not only to Buell’s fortitude, but also the fact that the company could produce a stunning and technologically advanced superbike on their own. The 1190RS was designed while drawing inspiration from their other previous work - the 1125R - except that the former clearly stands on its own as a superbike serving notice. The frame casting of the bike is all-new while the airbox on the bike is twice the size of the previous version. Other important elements of the bike, including the wheels, suspension, brakes, body, structural components, and controls are all new and stand-alone from anything else Buell Racing has produced in the past. More details on the Buell Racing 1190RS SUperbike after the jump. Buell Racing 1190RS Superbike originally appeared on topspeed.com on Friday, 24 June 2011 09:15 EST. |
| Porsche Panamera P680 by Switzer Performance Posted: 24 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT Ohio-based tuning specialist, Switzer Performance, is fast making a name for itself in the aftermarket industry, having created a growing number of projects that include the Nissan GT-R E900 and the Porsche 911 GT2. Their latest program is for the Porsche Panamera Turbo and as you can expect, Switzer gave it a robust tuning upgrade. They added their newly developed P680 hardware on the German luxury saloon’s 4.4-liter V8 engine and its resulting output from the standard 500 horsepower and 516 lb/ft of torque to a mouth-watering 680 horsepower and right about 700 lb/ft of torque. In addition to the P680 hardware, the added boost in output was also aided by the addition of a new intercooler system and the company’s own Siemens ECU upgrade. All in all, the Switzer-tuned Panamera Turbo is now capable of hitting 0-60 mph in a little over three seconds with a top speed of 215 mph. The whole package is now available for a base price of $22,000, which may sound like a fortune, except for the fact that it does give the Panamera enough boost to become a gnarly monster. For that price tag, it’s good enough for us. Porsche Panamera P680 by Switzer Performance originally appeared on topspeed.com on Friday, 24 June 2011 09:00 EST. |
