| Car Infographics: Formula One Broken Down By Numbers Posted: 07 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT Many people are only interested - or privy to - the end result of many different things. For example, no one really cares how the cake is made as long as it tastes delicious. The same can be said for Formula One. As fans, we root for our favorite team or driver and hope that they come across that finish line first. Most of the time, we don’t know how they got there or how much it costs to get there. Our latest installment of our Car Infographics series cracks that mystery right open with a breakdown of Formula One vehicles by numbers. For example, we discovered the engine of a F1 vehicle costs around $214,300 while the monocoque comes in at around $117,900. The tires may only cost $650 per set, but then you have to take into account how many sets the vehicle will go through in its lifetime (it’s about $291,200 worth if you’re wondering). Add the one time purchases to the accruing costs and estimates come in at about $6,868,000 for the lifetime of the F1 car. That’s definitely not chump change in our books. This infographic also sheds some light on the performance numbers of a typical Formula One car. For example, a typical F1 vehicle can sprint from 0-60 mph in just 1.7 seconds and continue on to 124 mph in just 3.8 seconds. The sprint from 0-186 mph can be achieved in 8.6 seconds. That is all done with a 2.4L V8 maximum engine size. Check out the rest of the infographic to get a more detailed breakdown of Formula One and remember to check back with us for our next installment in the Car Infographics series. | Lamborghini will drop manual transmission for future supercars Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:04 AM PDT The current Lamborghini Aventador has been unveiled with a new ISR transmission that weights only 174 lbs. And now the company announced that all the future supercar coming from S’ant Agata will drop the manual transmission in favor of a fully automated seven-speed single-clutch transmission. According to Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s R&D director, a manual transmission is "a break in the electronic chain of command that harmonizes absolutely everything that happens between engine combustion chamber and tire contact patch. The only way Lamborghini can guarantee soothing smoothness in city driving or back-thumpingly explosive acceleration on a winding road is for every system in the car to be interconnected. You can’t rely on a driver to always shift gears without glitches." Also he said that the next Gallardo (known as the Cabrera) won’t be the only new model coming from the company. In the next few months Lamborghini will make a finally decision in offering or not a production version of the Sesto Elemento supercar. | New Images of HBH's Future Supercar Released Posted: 07 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT With all of the hubbub surrounding the Aston Martin V12 Zagato, it was only a matter of time before HBH released more information on their upcoming model. Teased only a couple of months ago with one gun shy rendering, the HBH supercar has now moved to the next phase in its design, as illustrated in these new sketches. HBH’s future supercar will be based on the V12 Vantage, as was the V12 Zagato, but will also feature design aspects from the One-77 supercar. New details suggest that the vehicle will be put into limited production starting 2012 and won’t be built as a one-off model as previously suggested. HBH is a Danish coachbuilder - named after its owners Hermann, Brandt, and Hartvig - who designed the impressive Zenvo ST1 hypercar, an 1104 horsepower machine. Their newest project won’t tackle that horsepower feat again, but it will carry a V12 engine equipped with twin supercharger specially designed just for this model. The engine in standard form can be found in the V12 Vantage, but only delivering 510 HP. In the HBH supercar, this engine will be specially tweaked to deliver up to about 700 HP. Another difference will be in the placement of the engine; the V12 Vantage carries its engine in the front while the HBH model will be mounted in the middle. Stay tuned for more details on HBH’s future supercar! New Images of HBH's Future Supercar Released originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 7 July 2011 13:00 EST. |
| Posted: 21 Apr 2011 10:00 AM PDT Infiniti is preparing to enter a new market segment with the launch of the JX crossover, a 7-seater luxury model. The company hasn’t revealed many details on this concept as of yet, and apparently they are not going to until the vehicle makes its official debut at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August. A production version will be revealed in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but the vehicle won’t be going on sale until Spring 2012 as a 2013 model. Like we said before, Infiniti hasn’t dished out any extravagant details for their new SUV model, but they have confirmed that the JX will have three rows of seats with room for seven passengers. The crossover’s exterior design will follow along the lines of the Infiniti Essence Concept revealed at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and the interior will feature the next generation of Infiniti’s telematics and infotainment technology. "There aren't a lot of choices for luxury families today. The all-new Infiniti JX is the 7-passenger antidote to the ho-hum luxury crossovers that are out there right now," said Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas. "The Infiniti JX will have a stunning interior, while offering exceptional seating flexibility, easy access to the roomy third row, plus the latest in-vehicle technology – including next-generation telematics. A fitting addition to our line, it will challenge the status quo in its class." Infiniti JX Concept originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 21 April 2011 17:00 EST. |
| Terrafugia Tradition flying car gets government approval Posted: 07 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT Terrafugia has moved one step closer to bringing the world a flying "car." A future of flying cars is still probably a long ways away from happening - if it ever makes it that far - but at least there’s some baby steps taking place that are heading in that direction. Terrafugia Inc., a company responsible for the development of the Transition Roadable Aircraft, has been granted a number of testing exemptions by the Department of Transportation and has since been designated as a road-legal car. One of the more pertinent exemptions given to the Transition is the use of tires that have been duly rated for highway speeds and vehicle weight, permitting the vehicle to use the same tires it used in past drive and flight tests a few years ago. Hit the jump for more information on the Terrafugia Flying Car as well as a list of specifications. | BMW 5-Series F10 'Black Bison' by Wald International Posted: 07 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT Japanese tuners like Wald International have never been the type to have any nationalistic bias with their programs. If there’s a car that’s ripe for a project, they don’t hesitate to put their boots on and get to work. That’s no more evident than with the 2011 BMW 5-Series, codenamed ’F10’. Despite being a German brand, Wald International nonetheless prepared a pretty slick restyling program for the sports car, one that includes fresh aerodynamic pieces forged from fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Among the notable upgrades done on the 5-Series are a restyled front bumper with its own set of new air vents and LED daytime lights, a seemingly mandatory addition for just about every high-end tune-up on the market these days. Matching wits on the front end is a rear that sees its own set of fresh additions, including a complementing rear bumper, a new deck-lid, roof spoilers, side skirts, and the Japanese tuning company’s very own exhaust tailpipes. Added elements like a lowered suspension, new side skirts, a limited set of bespoke floor mats, and a set of multi-spoke alloy wheels gives the new 5-Series added cool points, making it one of the most freshly-styled 5-Series’ on the market today. These changes, plus the car’s eight-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engine with 407 horsepower, makes it worthy enough to sit in any BMW fan’s garage. | Mercedes E63 AMG with AMG Performance Studio Posted: 06 Jul 2011 01:00 PM PDT Mercedes is prepping for the onslaught of customers readying their wallets for the 2012 Mercedes E63 AMG with some AMG Performance Studio styling. After all, no one wants to see the same E63 AMG passing by over and over again, especially if you happen to be riding in one as well. As part of the new "AMG Performance 2015" model strategy, the E63 AMG will now come equipped with an AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine that delivers an output of 525 HP to 557 HP and a peak torque of 516 lbs-ft. The car will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and will be capable of a top speed of 155 mph. This is all fine and dandy, but customization issues are always a plus, and Mercedes is readying the attack AMG Performance Studio options such as a performance suspension, a ceramic high-performance composite braking system, an exterior Carbon package, and an AMG Driver's package that will include the removal of the speed limiter. | Porsche Cayenne Diesel by TechArt Posted: 06 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT TechArt’s bread and butter is clearly found on the latest models in Porsche’s lineup. This German tuner has updated a never-ending list of Porsches and the Cayenne seems to be the vehicle of choice. Their latest kit is for the diesel variant and features their old Magnum package with a power increase to boot. The star of the show is the new TechTronic power kit TA 058/D1 that will add another 40 HP and 52 lb-ft of torque to the car’s standard 240 HP and 405 lb-ft. With a new total of 280 HP and 457 lb-ft of torque, the updated Cayenne Diesel Magnum will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and to 100 mph in 18.9 seconds. Top speed has been increased to 144 mph. Exploiting this new-found power is a new sport exhaust system with twin tailpipes and an embossed TECHART logotype. This ensures that the giant Porsche’s purr gets a bit more growl. The exterior of the Cayenne Diesel is nothing new as the Magnum package first debuted at the Auto Zurich Car Show in 2010 and in many other variants throughout the years. This package puts in a front apron with two large air intakes and integrated TechArt daytime running lights, an Aero engine hood outfitted in carbon fiber with integrated air outlets, a three-part tail light trim with an integrated spoiler shape, and a new set of wheels. The interior also gets some attention with a roof mounted Entertainment Kit with an adjustable overhead monitor, a hand-made display console in leather, a 3-spoke sport steering wheel, and TechArt paddle shifters. | Posted: 06 Jul 2011 11:00 AM PDT The Porsche 911 can be considered as classic as a Rembrandt, becoming an artistic addition to the often style-less sports car category. The shape has remained constant because well, why toy with perfection? The fact that it is well know for its iconic look might explain why the 911 has only been changed three times in its 48 year history. The 2012 911, known by its codename "991", is the latest interpretation of Porsche's classic 911. This new 911 is going to undergo a bit of makeover with a 4 inch longer wheel base and wider axle tracks. However, the biggest change happens under the hood. Porsche appears to have decided to downsize the flat six engine from 3.6 liters to 3.4 liters. Motor Authority also points out that the base engine will be based on the one found on the Boxster S and Top Gear says Porsche has "fitted it with new cylinder heads to allow it to rev higher." Don't react to this with angst though because the base power plant pushes out a meaty 350 horses. The Carrera RS version (replacing the Carrera S) will have a nice 400 horsepower which is 15 more than the previous model. As the power goes up, torque goes down in the base model by 8 lbs/ft, while in the RS it goes down by 15 lbs/ft. According to Top Gear, Porsche has also been shaving away the weight (30-40kg) by using aluminum for the floor and most of the external panels. This was done by Porsche to improve fuel economy and lower emissions. Then supporting these new power plants will be a new seven speed manual or the optional double clutch automatic. Hit the jump for the full story. First Look: 2012 Porsche 911 originally appeared on topspeed.com on Wednesday, 6 July 2011 18:00 EST. |
| A Rundown of the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed Posted: 06 Jul 2011 10:00 AM PDT The 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed took place this past weekend and featured a steady stream of car shows, birthday celebrations, a Bonhams auction, and of course, the annual Goodwood Hill Climb. Eventful as it always is, this year’s installment of the Goodwood Festival of Speed saw a number of world debuts, including that of the McLaren MP4-12C and the Skoda Octavia vRS. On top of that, a couple of automakers also celebrated milestones of their own with one celebrating the 50th anniversary of its most iconic model with a sculpture in front of the Goodwood House, while the other celebrated their 100th anniversary in what can be considered as an invasion of all their UK models. Not to be outdone, Bonhams also auctioned off some of the world’s rarest and most exclusive models over the weekend, raking in millions and millions of dollars in the process. Then there’s the annual Goodwood Hill Climb, which features 50 of the fastest cars on the planet taking turns running up the 1.6-mile Goodwood driveway that leads to the front of the estate. The car that took that title? You’ll never guess if you don’t read past that jump. On that note, head over after the jump to get your 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed recap!
