Ferrari 458 Italia Spyder

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

If there’s anything better than a beautiful, red Ferrari 458 Italia, it’s that same beautiful, red Ferrari with its top stripped off. We received confirmation that Ferrari was planning on producing a Spyder version of one of their highly successful new models back in 2009 from none other than Luca di Montezemolo, himself and now we’ve taken out our drawing board and sketched us up a nice little image of what that car will look like.

Rumors suggest that the new 458 Italia Spyder will make good use of the same folding hardtop found on the Ferrari California. If this is true then we can expect a hard top made from aluminum panels with a cast aluminum weight-bearing structure. This structure has reduced its overall weight and the moving masses involved. The entire opening/closing cycle is completed in just 14 seconds.

It’ safe to say that we’ll find the same 4,499 cc V8 engine mated to an F1 dual-clutch gearbox under the hood of the Spyder version with the same 570 HP at 9,000 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque at 6000 rpm as the coupe. The engine delivers an outstanding power output of 127 HP/liter and 120 Nm/liter and only 307 g/km of CO2 with a fuel consumption of just 13.3 l/100 km. As with any other convertible model, the Ferrari 458 Italia Spyder will gain some weight due to the hardtop which will make performance suffer just a bit. The sprint from 0-60 mph will take a tad longer than 3.4 seconds while top speed will sit below 201 mph.

UPDATE 07/15/2011: Ferrari has officially confirmed that the future 458 Italia Spyder will indeed feature a trick folding hard-top and not a cloth roof as used in its predecessor. The roadster version will also drop the transparent engine cover. (Piston Heads)

Ford Mustang "Blue Angels" Edition

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Every year, Ford rolls out a special edition one-piece Mustang for the very purpose of auctioning it off at the EAA AirVenture in July for the benefit of the EAA Young Eagles program. These babies - as with all one-off edition cars - are exceedingly rare for the very simple reason that there’s only one of them being made.

This year, the one-off, aviation-themed Mustang GT was built to celebrate the 100th anniversary of naval aviation. It comes with a specific blue-and-yellow color scheme that takes itself from the colors of the ’Blue Angels’ fighter group with a yellow "Blue Angels" script and crest on the doors. Likewise, the crest can also be found on the interior of the car, where they are stitched into the leather Recaro seats.

On top of that, Ford also upgraded the Mustang’s powertrain, improving the output of the car’s 5.0-liter V8 engine from 412 horsepower to 500 horsepower. There’s also a Ford Racing handling package, a new performance exhaust, and race-track capable brakes.

Last year, Ford was able to auction off the Mustang SR-71 "Blackbird" for $375,000. Judging by the enthusiastic turn out for these events, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Mustang GT "Blue Angels" Edition hits that mark again, maybe even exceeding it.

If you’re interested in bidding for this one-off bad boy, you need to pre-qualify by calling Matt Miller at the EAA Development Office at 1-800-236-1025 before July 25, 2011.

In the meantime, hit the jump to check out a short preview of the one-off Mustang.

Porsche Panamera

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 10:00 AM PST

Porsche has made headlines in the industry with its Panamera 4-door sedan since it hit the market in 2009 as a 2010 model. Contrary to many of the company's other models, the Panamera had many critics. Not only did the idea of a 4-door Porsche rustle purist's feathers, but the design and styling left many scratching their heads. From some angles the car is impressive and echoes the sports car heritage that made the company famous, but when viewing the rear it’s hard to imagine exactly what the designers were thinking.

Design aside, the Panamera puts up startling performance figures in Turbo trim and made the automotive press take a step back to examine it further. Three models were offered for 2010, each with a V8 engine under the hood pushing 400hp and the Turbo at 500hp. New for 2011 will be the addition of two V6 models with the engine being designed by Porsche specifically for duty in its flagship sedan. The increased fuel economy and lower sticker price are the main reasons driving Porsche to offer this model.

With the strong performance of the 500hp Turbo model being much of the reason why enthusiasts gave the car a second look, can a V6 Porsche sedan keep up with the pack?

UPDATE 07/15/2011: Porsche recently set out to the Shanghai International Circuit with the Panamera Turbo to break the lap speed record for a four-door production car. They succeeded with a lap time of 2:29.640 minutes, but we can’t find any mention anywhere of the original record. Was the Panamera a Turbo the maiden four door vehicle? That’s what it looks like, leaving Porsche to look a little silly for the announced "achievement." Take a look at the new record in the video provided.

Hit the jump for more details on the 2011 Porsche Panamera.

K1 Evelio

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Looks like the Tesla Roadster is going to have a new rival in the race for electric sports car supremacy. Unveiled at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, the K1 Evelio is the latest in what is becoming a growing number of electric sports cars looking to enter the market to give Tesla a serious run for its money.

If the car looks familiar to you, it’s because it’s based on the Slovakian sports car, the K-1 Attack Roadster, a car that has graced our pages on numerous occasions. According to the people over at K1, the Evelio pretty much has the same body as the Attack Roadster, except that it has an electric powertrain as opposed to the 2.0-liter V6 engine found on the latter.

Details behind the car are still limited - the company’s website is still bare bones - but from what we’ve sourced, the Evelio appears to have a body that’s made out of fiberglass while the chassis comes in a tubular steel space frame. Likewise, smaller items used on the car were crafted in aluminum.

More details on the K1 Evelio after the jump.

Infiniti JX Concept

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Infiniti is preparing to enter a new market segment with the launch of the JX crossover, a 7-seater luxury model. The company hasn’t revealed many details on this concept as of yet, and apparently they are not going to until the vehicle makes its official debut at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August. A production version will be revealed in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but the vehicle won’t be going on sale until Spring 2012 as a 2013 model.

Like we said before, Infiniti hasn’t dished out any extravagant details for their new SUV model, but they have confirmed that the JX will have three rows of seats with room for seven passengers. The crossover’s exterior design will follow along the lines of the Infiniti Essence Concept revealed at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and the interior will feature the next generation of Infiniti’s telematics and infotainment technology.

"There aren't a lot of choices for luxury families today. The all-new Infiniti JX is the 7-passenger antidote to the ho-hum luxury crossovers that are out there right now," said Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas. "The Infiniti JX will have a stunning interior, while offering exceptional seating flexibility, easy access to the roomy third row, plus the latest in-vehicle technology – including next-generation telematics. A fitting addition to our line, it will challenge the status quo in its class."

UPDATE 07/07/2011: Infiniti has unveiled the first official teaser image of the JX Concept which will join the Infiniti line next Spring. The luxury crossover concept will make its official debut at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 18, 2011.

Mercedes CLS 500 MEC Design

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Following the release of its Mercedes SLS AMG program last May, MEC Design has gone ahead and introduced their latest Silver Arrow project. However, this time they are focusing their attention on the sporty and luxurious CLS 500.

Included in the styling and aerodynamic kit are new modified bumpers with LED fog lights and daylights, a new ’Extreme’ diffuser on the rear, new side skirts, a three-piece trunklid spoiler, and a rear roof spoiler. In addition to that, the CLS 500 was also given a refreshed grille, LED mirror covers, a decidedly sexy and sleek full matte black foil wrap, four stainless steel pipe tips, and a set of 20" mecxtremeIII full matte black finish alloy wheels that have been wrapped in 285/25 ZR 20 tires. Inside, the CLS 500 receives a new carbon and leather steering wheel to go with new floormats.

MEC Design’s program concentrated on the styling and aerodynamic elements of the CLS 500, opting to leave the car’s 4.6-liter V8 engine that produces an output of 402 horsepower and 443 lb/ft of torque largely untouched.

Not that it should matter because the CLS 500 is already one that has its fair share of high-powered ponies under its hood.

Porsche Cajun

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Remember when Porsche released the Cayenne? Remember all the people in their Porsche owners club shirts sitting around and telling you about how this new SUV was a disgrace to the Porsche logo and that all the company should design and produce are 911 variants?

While they might have had a point, the Cayenne sold like bottled water and like this water in plastic, it’s completely pointless. People don’t need this much power from something that will be used to haul around families. Yet, it became the automaker’s best selling model, despite its looks.

Now, to put the owners club folks in the mental home, Porsche is created a smaller SUV, the Cajun. No, it’s not intended for people in New Orleans, but it is intended for people who found the Cayenne to be a bit too large and fancied something a bit more crossover like.

Porsche officially confirmed the small SUV in an official statement detailing their hopes for the vehicle: "Under the working name "Cajun", this efficient and sporty model will further expand the world's most successful Porsche segment in the SUV sector. In addition to the new Cayenne, which has clearly consolidated its market position as the most successful sporty SUV in the premium segment, the "Cajun" will also have a very positive impact with its typical Porsche features such as light weight, ease of handling and agility. As an attractive entry model in the Porsche world, the "Cajun" will attract new and even younger customers to the premium brand along with the Boxster, the market leader in the segment of two-seater, mid-size sports cars."

UPDATE 06/07/2011: Looks like the Cajun may be getting its power from a powerful diesel engine from sister brand, Audi. According to Autocar, Porsche is planning on dropping Audi’s 3.0-liter V6 diesel producing 309 bhp and 479 lb-ft of torque into the small SUV. This news comes along with plans to build the Cajun on Audi’s Q5 platform which will end up saving a lot of money and will help bring the two brands closer together.

UPDATE 07/14/2011: AutoCar has posted today a series of images of the upcoming Cajun, that according to the British magazine are the first leaked in-house computer renderings of the upcoming baby Cayenne. As you can see from these renderings, the Cajun is likely to draw heavily on 911 design cues, while part of the interior elements will be shared with the next-generation Boxster.

More details on the Porsche Cajun after the jump.

Aston Martin DBS

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 11:00 AM PDT

The Aston Martin DBS first appeared in 1967 and remained in production until it was phased out by the Aston Martin V8 in 1972. It wasn’t until 2007 that the DBS showed its face again, and the second time around seemed to be the turning point for the grand tourer, benefiting from five successful years on the market. Now, Aston Martin is working on the new generation DB9 which will eventually give way to a refreshed DBS.

The new DBS, set to be launched in late 2012, will receive a revised front grille and bumpers, fresh body side styling, and a revised cockpit. Expect to see an exterior inspired by the One-77 supercar, with its borrowed bonnet, sides, and cooling vents. These elements will help transform the elegant DBS into a more aggressive sports car.

As for the power behind this beast, a 6.0-liter V12 engine will still find its way under the hood of the sports car, but will get tweaked to deliver about 530 HP (up 20 HP from the current model). The added power will be put to better use now that the VH platform is dropping about 10-15% of its weight, bringing it down to about 3,300 pounds.
