| Volkswagen Beetle EV “Black Current” Posted: 12 May 2011 09:00 AM PDT In the high-octane, torque-twisting world of the drag strip, a paradigm shift is slowly taking shape with the most unlikely of cars leading the way. Unassuming look aside, the "Black Current" Volkswagen Beetle EV by Oliver Young is an electric vehicle that has done some serious damage on the drag strip becoming the first street-bodied EV to post a nine-second, quarter-mile time. That time looks more impressive when you take into account the fact that this little Beetle once destroyed a Tesla Roadster on a drag strip. While it's not the fastest quarter-mile time ever posted by an EV – that title belongs to the Current Eliminator, which covered the same distance in seven seconds at 160 mph – the Black Current does hold the record for being the fastest 'street-bodied' EV in the world - at least until proven otherwise. For now, though, Oliver Young can stake claim to this tremendous achievement and on a grander scale, he and his 'Black Current' Beetle EV are giving EVs the proper exposure in the world of drag racing, something that was unheard of as late as a decade ago. | Kentucky Speedway Ford Mustang Pace Car Posted: 12 May 2011 08:00 AM PDT Every racetrack these days seem to be in the spirit of one-upping the other with their own set of pace cars. The 2011 Quaker State 400 NASCAR event at the Kentucky Speedway, though, will have something a little different in mind. In collaboration with Ford, the Kentucky Speedway is set to unveil a special edition 2012 Ford Mustang GT Convertible called "the Kentucky Speedway Mustang Pace Cars". Limited to only 43 units to signify the number of entrants that will compete in the inaugural Quaker State 400, the special edition Mustang will come with a number of unique features, including a special exterior package that comes with an all-white paint finish, an "Official Pace Car" badging, a pedestal spoiler, side scoops, a decklid panel, and NASCAR and Kentucky Speedway logos. Each of the 43 Mustangs will be numbered individually for collection purposes, making each of them a true collector's piece. Talking about the partnership with Ford, Kentucky Speedway General Manager Mark Simendinger said: "It’s natural for us to work together to spotlight the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series visit to this region. Ford Racing and our regional Ford dealers are coming through once again with great programs that showcase our ’Quaker State 400’ and the outstanding Ford lineup," Those interested in buying one of the 43 limited edition models will also receive free tickets to the Quaker State 400 race on July 9, 2011, as well as an opportunity to drive their Mustang around the track during the parade lap with a Sprint Cup driver. A special edition Ford Mustang and a chance to drive around an actual NASCAR event during the parade lap? That's a pretty good deal, if you ask us. | Posted: 28 Apr 2011 06:00 AM PDT The wait is over ladies and gentlemen: Lamborghini’s next hypercar has made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, and dare we say what a hypercar it is! The new Bull God will feature an earth shattering 700hp V12 and the highest power to weight ratio of any car in its class. Yes, this is the new, long waited Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Lamborghini is really good at creating sinister super sports cars, but it is equally as talented at naming them. According to the company, "Aventador" was the name of a bull that entered into battle on October 1993 at the Saragossa Arena, earning the "Trofeo de la Peña La Madroñera" for its outstanding courage. Having the courage to go up against a new world of super sports cars will be the name of the game for the new Lamborghini flagship. Today's world is extremely high-tech and many new players have entered the arena. Lamborghini has been promoting its carbon-fiber monocoque technology and the Aventador's 2.9 second 0-62mph, but will that be enough? According to Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. "The Aventador is a jump of two generations in terms of design and technology, it's the result of an entirely new project, but at the same time it's a direct and consistent continuation of Lamborghini's brand values. It is extreme in its design and its performance, uncompromising in its standards and technology, and unmistakably Italian in its style and perfection. Overall, the dynamics and technical excellence of the Aventador LP 700-4 makes it unrivalled in the worldwide super sports car arena." UPDATE 03/04/2011: Lamborghini has placed an online configurator up for our greedy little consumption. We’d talk more about it, but we’re on our way over to build ourselves an Aventador! UPDATE 04/28/2011: Lamborghini has unveiled yet another promotional video for the Aventador LP700-4 showing the car off on the streets of Rome. Hit the jump to read more on the new Aventador. | Posted: 12 May 2011 06:00 AM PDT After the E-tron concept and the E-tron Detroit Show car, Audi has brought us the e-tron technology platform based on the R8 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. This has turned out to be more than just a publicity stunt or science experiment. Audi is serious about bringing this car to market and has taken the time to develop a completely new ideology behind this electric R8 and the normal gasoline version. Having the exterior design of the car already completed and in supercar form it was an easier job for the Audi engineers to develop an electric version than if they would have had to start from scratch. The mid-engine design of the R8 provides the perfect location to store heavy batteries without distorting the weight balance that Audi wanted to achieve. In essence, this electric version should be able to compete on the same levels as its V8 and V10 brothers, but will it be as exhilarating? That all depends on what the driver sees as excitement – The V10 version will provide an unbridled amount of power and harmonious soundtrack to go along with it, but the electric version will incorporate some of the most innovative technology available today. Being able to reach high top speeds in the least amount of time is the most important thing that a sports car can deliver, if it can do it by using batteries than we don't really see a problem. If Audi can truly create an exciting Quattro experience with its new E-Tron R8 than they will have accomplished something truly special in this emerging market. UPDATE 05/12/2011: Audi has unveiled a series of images describing the production stages of the R8 E-tron at the Neckarsulm plant's satellite site in Heilbronn-Biberach as employees begin to build the first technology platform for the electric model. The first small series of units for the electric sports car will run in late 2012. Hit the jump for more details on the Audi R8 E-Tron. | Rolls-Royce Phantom by Project Kahn Posted: 12 May 2011 05:00 AM PDT Project Kahn is one of those tuning companies that never runs out of tuning projects. A few weeks after it released the Maybach 57 Wedding Commemorative Edition, the British tuning firm headed by Afzal Kahn has another one in the oven. This time, it's an upgraded Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe that comes with plenty of aesthetic modifications. Adding on to what is already a high-brow look, Project Kahn gave the Phantom a shadow-line finish to go with clear side lights, head light surrounds, window surrounds, rear light surrounds, and under floor lighting. On top of that, the British tuner added a bullet resistant glass to fit into their high-security profile. And to round out the aesthetic goodness, Project Kahn fitted the Phantom with a new set of diamond-polished 22" Kahn Silver Mist Rolls Royce wheels. Meanwhile, the interior of the Phantom, at least according to Project Kahn, can be tailor-made depending on the customer's tastes and whims. In a statement, the company said: "Inside is a complete bespoke interior design service available to suit individual tastes. By buying a Project Kahn vehicle, you are given the opportunity to really make it your own." For those that can afford this car and all the upgrades Project Kahn offers, feel free to knock yourselves out. For the rest of us lemmings, these photos are about as good as it gets. | Posted: 12 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT The latest addition to the Porsche 911 line-up is the Carrera 4 GTS - the top end version of the Carrera models that combines the Carrera GTS technology with an all-wheel drive twin. The new model will be put on sale in July with prices for Germany starting from 111,956 euro (about $160,000 at the current rates) for the coupe and 122,071 euro (about $175,000 at the current rates) for the convertible version. Prices for the US market will be announced at a later date. The new Porsche Carrera 4 GTS is powered by a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine, which is the same engine used in the Carrera S. The only difference in the engine is that it pushes out an additional 23 HP, getting the total number up to 408 HP. With this output and with the intelligent, all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM), the new 4 GTS will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds for the coupe version and in 4.8 seconds for the cabriolet. | Posted: 12 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT The IndyCar Series will be getting its fair share of changes when the 2012 season rolls around with the most notable of which being the entry of Dallara as the official chassis manufacturer of the racing series. As early as this week, the company has presented two new concepts of what the 2012 IndyCar racer will look like. Using the same chassis but with a different design, the two concepts have differing set-ups, one being set-up for oval racing while the other being prepared for road circuits. Dallara went with this presentation to show teams the lengths of which aerodynamic modifications on the car can be done while still sticking with the current set of car regulations handed down by the series' governing body. Both concepts are still in the testing and development phase so expect some changes – whatever they may be – to come when the race car concepts are put through the paces out on the track. Above everything else, Dallara is making safety and technological performance the top priorities in the development of the 2012 IndyCar racer. For now, you can check out the two concepts and you let us know what you think about them in the comments section below. 2012 Dallara IndyCar Concepts originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 12 May 2011 09:00 EST. |
| Audi R8 V8 Challenge Extreme Edition by STaSIS Engineering Posted: 11 May 2011 01:00 PM PDT Following the success of the Audi R8 V10 Extreme Challenge Edition, Stasis Engineering has taken over the V8 model to provide it with the same advanced tuning package. With power updates and aerodynamic modifications, this newly-tuned V8 is even faster than the standard R8 V10. The standard V8 engine found in the Audi R8 has been given a not so silent partner in the Eaton/Magnusson TVS 1900 supercharger running 7.5 psi of boost. That extra power is sure to heat things up so Stasis made sure to install an independent charge cooler system to ensure consistent high power output. They then went into the high performance STaSIS ECU remap to get a total of 540 HP and 435 lb.ft of torque. This new output provides a 0-60 mph sprint time of 3.6 seconds, a tenth of a second faster than the standard R8 V10. In order to handle the power increase of 28%, the Stasis Engineering also put in a new brake system, lowering springs to improve handling and overall appearance, and a new set of 20" ultra-lightweight forged aluminum wheels wrapped around high performance low profile tires. Hit the jump for a full list of specifications for the Audi R8 V8 Challenge Extreme Edition, including a comparison chart.
