BMW 1-Series M Coupe

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 05:00 AM PDT

BMW has just released some new information about the long awaited 1-Series M Coupe, including engine information, release dates, and the toys it will carry.

Under the hood will be the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 340 horsepower. That motor will be connected to six-speed manual transmission. There will no automatic option with this vehicle. That motor should be more than enough to haul around the car’s 3,307-pound weight.

The M1 will feature a chassis, braking system, and rear differential similar to the M3. In total, that power and these tweaks have made the M1 faster than the E46 M3 around the Nordschleife.

UPDATE 03/10/2011: BMW has placed an online configurator for the 1-Series M Coupe, the perfect opportunity to play a bit with the options offered for this amazing car. From this configurator, we were also able to get the pricing on all of the options offered. Hit the jump to check them out in our price section.

UPDATE 04/26/2011: When BMW unveiled the 1-Series M Coupe, there were some people that suggested a small car like this could never deliver the same performance numbers as the BMW M3. German sports car magazine, Sport Auto, took that as a challenge and took the coupe to Hockenheim where it clocked a lap time of 1:14.1. This final number is slightly better than the 1:14.2 time obtained by the BMW M3, but not as good as Porsche Cayman R’s PDK time of 1:12.4 or the BMW E46 M3 CSL’s 1:13.5. Still, not bad for a small car, eh?

McLaren MP4-12C - fastest at the Top Gear track

Posted: 16 May 2011 08:00 AM PDT

A super car can be be given that title through definition itself, but any true super car will need to test its worth on two different tracks: the Nurburgring and the Top Gear test track. Now it seems the latter has found itself a new record holder in the McLaren MP4-12C.

Up until now, the record for the fastest lap time around the Dunsfold track was held by the Ariel Atom V8 500’s time of 1:15.1. Now, a McLaren dealer in London is foaming at the mouth with information that the MP4-12C has smashed that record with a lap time of 1:14.118 when equipped with standard tires. Take it a bit further and this same dealer reports that, when the vehicle was loaded with the "Light weight package" and some Corsa tires, it managed to lap the circuit in 1:12.915. Oh, and it gets even better. The McLaren MP4-12C GTR is predicted to make that same lap in a blissful 1:09.

None of these times have been made official by McLaren just yet, but just the thought of them being true is enough for us to be left speechless.

Porsche 911 / 991

Posted: 16 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT

The 911 is the most successful model in Porsche’s history. It started its long history back in 1963 and since then Porsche has offered five distinct generations: 911 classic, 964 Series, 993 Series, 996 Series, and 997 Series. Moreover, the sixth one is already under intense testings and will make its official debut in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

It may be a little unorthodox for Porsche to be bringing out a new generation 911 despite the fact they just revealed a facelift version, but the requests keep changing and Porsche must answer the call of duty. Their latest target is improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The sixth generation 911, or the 998, will be a completely new vehicle, even though everyone will recognize it as a 911 model. Shortly after the launch of the 998 911, Porsche will also be releasing the Turbo, GT2, and GT3 in 2012.

UPDATE 03/5/2011: Recent spy shots have revealed that the next generation 911 might also be offered as a hybrid. The prototype caught testing featured extra devices attached to the brakes, most likely placed there in order to measure regenerative effects. The rear hood was enlarged and vented, and the side vent was just a stick-on decal.

UPDATE 05/16/2011: Autoblog reports that all the models in the next generation Porsche 911 line-up will be offered with the Kinetic Energy Recovery System. Until now, this system has been used in the Formula 1 vehicles and, most recently, added to Ferrari models.

More details on the 2012 Porsche 998 911 after the jump.

Saab 9-3 SRT10 MegaPower

Posted: 16 May 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Saab may be on the short stick – again - as far as their future is concerned, but some of their models still find a way to make the news and try to move the spotlight away from their tumultuous future into something a little more optimistic.

In this case, the question has to be posed: who knew that you could take a Saab 9-3, strip it down to its bare essentials, build the whole puzzle back together, and fit in an 8.4-liter V10 engine that comes courtesy of a Dodge Viper SRT10?

You read that whole paragraph right, folks. The word's 'Saab' and 'SRT' are coming together for a very revealing customer project. The final model, which is being called the '9-3 SRT10 MegaPower', came from the mind of one Zaccho Pelle, who wanted nothing more than to turn his Saab 9-3 Estate from an otherwise mundane wagon into a Viper SRT10-powered, 600-horsepower piece of automotive madness.

Any tuning kits for the Chevrolet Camaro typically take advantage of the muscle car’s coupe form, but Revolution Styling PR have gone a different route by capitalizing on the convertible version of this hot ride. With extensive modifications, including their own patent pending forward tilt hood, the tuning company has developed the world’s first Turbocharged Camaro Spyder. The model will be based on the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro and will be limited to 20 units per year. Speeding Sucks When You Get the Bill: Here's a Breakdown

Posted: 16 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT

It’s happened to all of us at some point in time. You’re driving along with the windows down and the wind whipping around, just enjoying your day, or maybe you left your house just a few minutes too late and the boss has been on your case lately about your "tardiness." Either way, those flashing blue and red lights look the same and you spend the next 30 minutes of your time trying to talk yourself out of the ticket and waiting in your car until the police officer finishes whatever they do for the eternity they spend sitting in their cruiser.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gathers all kinds of information over a few years to get a good idea of the number of tickets issued and what that translates into when it comes to money. Every year roughly 41,000,000 Americans receive a speeding ticket, translating into one ticket for every second of every day that ticks by, and the average ticket is about $150. Okay Mathematicians, that’s about $6.15 Billion for speeding fines alone. $6.15 Billion. And that doesn’t include the money raked in by insurance companies when those little tickets hit their systems. The average person’s insurance goes up by about $900 for one speeding ticket received in a span of three years.

So, how do we avoid getting speeding tickets? Okay, the only real answer is to not speed, but if you must then you should probably move to a place where the fine is a little tamer than others. In Tennessee and Connecticut, the first violation of speed will only get you a fine of $50, while Pennsylvania will only charge you $42 for your first. The lowest speeding ticket assigned for the first violation is awarded to North Dakota, who only dishes out a $20 ticket.

Live in New York? That’s a whopping $600 fine for your first offense. Utah gets even worse at $750. Want to get a killer speeding ticket for your first offense? Bog down in Illinois, Nevada, or New Hampshire to receive a $1,000 speeding ticket, and that’s only for your first time.

The moral of the story is to be safe and not speed. Of course, if that’s not enough to convince you, then check out more of the specifics in the images provided.

Ford Taurus

Posted: 16 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT

Long relegated as a mid-tier, mid-size sedan, the Ford Taurus was one of those cars that needed a refreshed styling, especially considering the growing number of competitors coming out on the market these days.

Fortunately, the people at Ford seem to have taken the challenge to task by introducing a refreshed and much-improved 2013 Taurus at the New York Auto Show.

Suffice to say, it was a tough task for Ford to shed some of the negative stereotypes given to the Taurus. A lot of people said it was chubby while some had pointed words on the car’s overall design.

For the 2013 model, Ford seems to have addressed a lot of these connotations, giving the car a more appealing look to quiet down its naysayers. While the styling refresh certainly gave the Taurus a more palatable appearance, its the addition of a new engine - a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo engine - that seems to have given the Taurus the right kind of buzz.

Details on the Ford Taurus after the jump.

Ferrari 458 Italia by Specialty Car Craft

Posted: 16 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Amongst the many European tuners taking a crack at modifying the Ferrari 458 Italia, only a minuscule number of US tuners exist. For whatever reason, Americans tend to want to leave the Ferrari alone and bide their time making over our hometown muscle cars. That being said, Specialty Car Craft has done what only very few have by preparing a small tuning package for the Italian thoroughbred. Don’t expect any modifications to be found under the hood because, well, SCC just isn’t that crazy.

What you will find is a number of small exterior modifications that alter the look of the vehicle just enough to call it complete. Covering the full outside of the car is a black exterior paint job that spreads even to the pieces that were originally chrome; they are now covered in black chrome. The sportier wheels are now painted in a gunmetal gray and are highlighted with newly painted yellow brake calipers.

This particular 458 Italia was created upon request from a customer, proving that the man has fine taste when it comes to his automobiles. The sports car is powered by the standard 4,499 cc V8 engine that delivers a total of 570 HP at 9,000 rpm and a peak torque of 398 lb-ft at 6000 rpm. This power, plus the exquisite exterior modifications, results in a car that will make every American fall for an Italian.

Video: DIRT 3 teases Ken Block and Tanner Foust drifting Gymkhana-style

Posted: 16 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT

As avid video gamers that have a preference for whatever form of high-octane, four-wheeled racing action, we still have a soft spot for the down-and-smoky world of DiRT 3. The latest installment of the game isn’t scheduled to hit stores until May 24, 2011, but we’re already getting some good preview videos of what to expect when the time comes for us to part ways with our hard-earned money.

You certainly won’t confuse this game for the posh and shiny world of Gran Turismo 5, but what you do get is plenty of smoke, burning tires, and off-the-rails action. To give us an idea of what to expect in the game, resident drifters Ken Block and Tanner Foust - or at least their virtual likeness - slide their drift-ready Ford Fiestas through a make-shift course.

Interested in shredding your tires while performing burnouts for hours? DiRT 3 will give you all that and more when the game drops next week. For now, you can check out the video of Block and Foust doing what they do best.
