Spy Shots: Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

Posted: 26 May 2011 09:00 AM PDT

We are all primed and ready for the debut of the new generation Porsche 911 / 991 at the 2011 Frankfurt Show, but some friends of ours are still hard at work capturing images of the future sports car in all of its blacked out, camouflaged glory. Their latest sneak peek is of the future Porsche Turbo Coupe shooting down the lane, revealing new rear lights.

The next generation 911 will be about 56mm longer than the current generation, growing to about 4.49 meters. The wheelbase also hit a growth spurt giving the 911 four inches in that department. Its design will chopped up bits of the Panamera and the 918 Spyder concept with larger front wing pontoons, lightly deeper side sills, door-mounted wing mirrors, and a resculpted rear end.

The 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo will more than likely get an output that is a bit higher than the current Turbo model - which delivers 530 HP - so we’re guessing about 550 HP will be on tap. Porsche will also offer both brake regeneration and stop start systems to help reduce fuel consumption by 12%. The new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox will also be offered and with no less than seven forward gears, it combines the driving comfort of a converter automatic transmission with the dynamic gearshift of a sequential racing gearbox.

Porsche Panamera Stingray GTR by TopCar

Posted: 26 May 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Russian tuner, Topcar, has apparently been on a mission to develop the biggest and baddest tuning package for the Porsche Panamera Turbo. They started off with the creation of a 542 HP Panamera and then went to sketches of a newer 600 HP model before finalizing their package with a maximum output of a whopping 700 HP! The Porsche Panamera Stingray GTR will be limited to only 25 units, with each tuning upgrade priced at 45,000 euro, or about $63,500 at the current exchange rates. By the way, four of them have already been sold.

The engine boost was provided by the addition of a new sport air filter, intake manifold, motronik, and valved exhaust system that got the Panamera up to the 600 HP mark. With a few more add-ons requested by the customer, TopCar will get that bite up to 700 HP.

The exterior was also worked on to balance out the awesomeness of this package. TopCar modified most of the Panamera’s body, including bumpers, the bonnet, front and rare fender extenders, front and rear doors, and side skirts. The tuner then went on to add extended wings, advanced air vents, sharp outlines for the blade front bumper and bonnet, strongly-marked rear diffuser, and a spoiler on the boot lid. Each interior for the 25 units produced will be treated as an individual design project and will be modified according to the customer’s preferences.

TopCar has proven that some things just get better with age. Hey, maybe if we wait a little bit longer they’ll come out with an 800 HP version of the Porsche Panamera Stingray GTR!

Mercedes Benz E-Class

Posted: 26 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Initially unveiled for the first time back in 1977 as the W123, the Mercedes E-Class took its name from the word "Einspritzmotor", which means ’fuel injection engine’ in German. Eventually, the letter morphed into being officially designated as the E-Class - or E-Klasse - to describe Mercedes’ line of mid-size executive vehicles.

Over the course of its life, the E-Class has had many different iterations with the latest facelift coming in 1999 and the introduction of the latest model, the W212. Introduced for the first time at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 2009 E-Class’ design was inspired by the new design language Mercedes adopted at that time for the C-Class, S-Class, and CLS-Class.

With the purpose of competing in a luxury executive market that features competitors in the form of the BMW 5-Series and the Audi A6, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has become one of the staple vehicles amongst high-ranking executives and business people the world over.

Details on the 2009-2011 Mercedes E-Class after the jump.

Bugatti Lucifer Design Study

Posted: 26 May 2011 04:00 AM PDT

How do you succeed something that looks to be imminently irreplaceable?

That's a question that everyone at Bugatti will be wondering when the time comes for the Bugatti Veyron to say farewell to all of us and give way to its successor. But if they are having some trouble thinking of a design for the Veyron successor, London-based designer Timur Bozca has a few ideas, including an odd choice of a name.

Bozca, an industrial designer from Coventry University of Automotive & Transport Design, understood that designing the supercar that would ultimately replace the iconic Veyron was easier said than done. So he went about working on a car that featured plenty of hard lines coupled with a more streamlined profile than the Veyron. Add a new front grille, a more aggressive fascia profile, and a touch of deep red and black, and you have Bozca's work of art: the freakishly named Bugatti Lucifer.

Odd choice for a name notwithstanding, Bozca gave the Lucifer a powertrain that would make the Veyron proud: an 8.0-liter W16 engine that produces 1,001 horsepower and 890 lb/ft of torque mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a top speed of somewhere in the neighborhood of 220 mph.

While we don't necessarily agree with the name-of-choice, we have to give Timur Bozca some props for the craftily-designed Veyron successor because that is one mean-looking SOB.

Chevrolet Corvette

Posted: 11 May 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Many of us have been waiting for the arrival of the next-generation Corvette C7 for quite some time. It’s not so much because we are hardcore Corvette lovers or even because the next generation is getting any dramatic changes to pique our interest, but with so many changes in regulations and the growing awareness of the environment - and the effects that has on our wallets - we were just curious to see if Chevrolet would be biting the bullet and straying away from their trademark V8 engine. A few months ago we shared a video of Chevrolet chief engineer, Tadge Juechter, getting very defensive over the company’s beloved Corvette and it became clear that the next generation would still carry the V8 engine that has gotten them this far, but it would be getting some changes to move with the times.

The 2013 Chevrolet Corvette - and not 2011 as originally planned - will be utilizing a 5.5L small block V8 engine in its front engine, rear wheel drive platform and will actually get more horsepower than the typical 6.2L and 7.0L engines used in the past. The Corvette will now sport 440HP, about 5 HP up from the previous generation, and will also feature better fuel economy to boot. The engine will come with a revised combustion system and an aluminum block and heads.

The engine won’t be the only defining change, that we can be sure of. Rumors suggest that Chevrolet will finally be bumping up the quality of the materials used in the sports car - ending what seems to be generations of poor quality complaints - and will be putting in higher end seats similar to buckets seats. If they expect to keep up with the times, then we would suggest putting in a few technological advances. If the Ford Focus can get all teched out, then the Corvette should be able to dazzle us with something.

UPDATE 05/11/2011: British magazine, AutoCar, has revealed new details on the C7 Corvette set to be released in 2013. According to their sources, the new model will be "completely different" from the current C6 and will be designed to target models from Ferrari and Porsche. The new C7 will adopt a mid-engined layout, with a V6 alternative being the highest possibility. The interior will also be much more modern than the current one.

McLaren crashes MP4-12C at the Ring while attempting record lap

Posted: 26 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT

You can’t say that the people over at McLaren aren’t busting their chops in trying to achieve a record-breaking run, can you? Whether or not the Woking, England-based automaker was attempting to do a hot lap with the MP4-12C at the Nurburgiring to determine the car’s full capacity, one thing we do know is that at some point, every automaker that has had aspirations of holding the fastest lap time at the ’Ring and McLaren is no exception.

So when word came out that McLaren ended up crashing an MP4-12C at the Nurburgring as part of their ’final testing’, a lot of curious eyebrows were raised, particularly on whether this testing included an attempt in breaking the fastest lap time at the world-famous race track.

According to witnesses, the crash caused a large impact that brought about significant damage to the guard rail, as well as causing a massive amount of fuel spillage on the stretch of the race track where the accident happened. As a result of the crash, the public session that was supposed to follow the private session ended up getting delayed because of what was deemed a ’roadworks zone’ on that part of the track.

McLaren, of course, has neither confirmed or denied this report, opting to contain the situation by keeping mum on the matter. With all the witnesses and reports coming around, though, it looks as if a final prototype of the MP4-12C was indeed involved in some kind of accident. Whether it was during an attempt at the ’Ring record is another matter, but it’s still probably best for these chaps to drive their cars with proper caution next time.

Honda Chopper

Posted: 25 May 2011 02:00 PM PDT

Do you remember the Pininfarina Coupe Concept we presented just a few days ago? Its designer, Peter Norris, has developed yet another amazing concept, but this time, it’s a motorcycle and not a car. His project is called the Honda Chopper and took its inspiration from a number of sources. It features clean functional lines of medical machinery, 70’s and 80’s marker drawings and design (such as Big Trak), and a bit of manga thrown in.

The new concept is a purpose-built chopper featuring a long front suspension, feet forward seating position, and a large footprint. Powering this chopper - like most of the other concepts revealed recently - are two small electric motors, one built into each wheel hub helping lower the center of gravity, improve efficiency, and lower emissions.

The bottom line is that this is a pretty impressive concept and since the inspiration behind the design is Star Wars, we expect many people to be able to appreciate its look.
