| BMW 1-Series with M-Sport Package Posted: 06 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT Now that BMW released the official details for the new generation 1-Series, it was only a matter of time before news of additional perks and packages were released as well. BMW.de was at the forefront of this information with news of the M-Sport package. According to the Germans, the M-Sport package will be available starting March 2012 and will add extra sporting equipment. The most intriguing feature of the new M Sport package is the addition of Estoril Blue Metallic to the list of color options (five total). This new color will join the ranks of an Individual High-gloss Shadow Line which replaces the chrome trim and a Dark Shadow Metallic rear diffuser. New components include a separate bumper and skirts for a more dynamic look, as well as fog lights and a set of 17" M light-alloy wheels as standard, 18" optional. The interior of the 1-Series also sees a few changes with an M leather steering wheel with multi function (paddle shifters optional), an M shifter, aluminum pedals, and aluminum inserts. Sports seats are also present and can be donned in Black, Oyster, or Coral Red Nappa leather or in a combination of Hexagon Fabric / Alcantara. The new engine in the line-up is the 1.6-liter petrol engine that will be used in the BMW 116i and BMW 118i models in combination with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The different variations of this engine will range from 136 HP to 170 HP. BMW 1-Series with M-Sport Package originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 6 June 2011 16:00 EST. |
| Tesla Model S "Alpha" Posted: 06 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT The long-awaited Tesla Model S is finally itching and itching closer to production as the California-based electric car maker has released the latest batch of photos for their electric sedan. Looking more or less the same as the concept version, the newly-designed Model S "Alpha" features a restyled front bumper and new rear lights that resemble that of the Jaguar XF. Despite the minimal changes, the "new-look" Model S Alpha figures to be as close to what the production version of this model is going to look like. If and when this model does see the light of the production block, Tesla has announced that the first 1,000 models of the Model S will be given a unique special edition badging - the North American Model S Signature Series - which will come with some added aesthetic treatments, a bevy of optional upgrades, and a powertrain that features the model’s top-of-the-line lithium-ion battery pack with a 300-mile range. Details on the Tesla Model S "Alpha" after the jump. Tesla Model S "Alpha" originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 6 June 2011 15:00 EST. |
| Video: Jimmie Johnson's Anything with an Engine Posted: 06 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT
NASCAR fans everywhere know the name Jimmie Johnson rather well, but for those that don’t, Johnson is an American NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race car driver. He currently drives for Hendrick Motorsports and is preparing his Panamera Hybrid for competition. And as if that wasn’t enough, the race car driver has also taken time to develop a new kart game: "Anything with an Engine." This isn’t your usual NASCAR game, but the title is rather explicative of what the idea behind it is. The fun little kart game allows gamers to drive anything with an engine and provides an arsenal of weapons to help the racer get to the finish line. Boost, missiles, and land mines, among other things, are used to take out the other players in the best of three rounds and players can even get creative with a slew of characters and crazy colors to personalize their driving experience. Jimmie Johnson’s "Anything with an Engine" is expected to be released later in the summer of 2011 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii. We’ll pass along more details as soon as they become available. Video: Jimmie Johnson's Anything with an Engine originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 6 June 2011 14:00 EST. |
| Posted: 06 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT Only one day after BMW announced the official details on the new generation 1-Series, Mini has also joined in on the party by releasing details of their own for their much anticipated Mini Coupe . Last seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009 as a mere concept, the first two-seater in the company’s lineup will make its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show with sales to begin shortly after. Prices will be announced at a later date. The new Mini Coupe will come sporting an entire lineup of four cylinder engines ranging from the base Coupe with 121 HP up to the John Cooper Works Coupe with 208 HP. It will also be the fastest-accelerating MINI ever with the highest top speed. The JCW Coupe, for example, will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and will be capable of a top speed of 149 mph. | Posted: 06 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT It’s apparent that cars of the future receive a lot of attention from would-be auto designers and, although many of these ideas will never see a production line, the designers behind them are still out to get noticed. Our latest futuristic find is actually a car that was already in existence: the Pontiac Solstice. This cool roadster was produced from 2005-2009, but came to a quick and tragic end, much like the automaker itself. Now, Macedonian designer, Dejan Hristov, is going to battle for the Solstice with his modern design study, the Solstice Concept II. The Solstice II Concept combines the core proportions of the original model, but adds a sculptural design language. At the front, Hristov’s concept features vertical headlights and a complexly-shaped carbon spoiler, while the rear end combines sharp lines with circular tail lights and exhaust pipes. It also has a targa layout, leaving the hard top to fold out of sight by rotating behind the seats. No mention was made on what would be powering the theoretical future Soltice, but if the times are any inclination, we’d guess a hybrid or electric setup. Either way the concept looks rather aggressive and could have potential. That is, if any other automaker felt like picking it up. | Posted: 30 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT Mercedes has caused history to repeat itself as they have come out with a roadster version for one of their popular coupes. This trend was seen in the SLR McLaren and will now repeat itself with the SLS AMG coupe version. The SLS AMG Roadster will be revealed in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but right now the car is under extreme testings. In terms of design, the roadster version will remain faithful to the coupe version. However, it will drop the gullwing doors in favor of more traditional units. The SLS Roadster will be offered with Mercedes’ traditional retractable soft-top which can be opened and closed electrohydraulically while on the move up to 30 mph. The Mercedes SLS AMG roadster version will be powered by a 6.3-liter V8 engine with 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. However, being a much heavier model, it will rocket from 0 to 60mph in 4.0 seconds before topping out at approximately 192 mph. In USA, the SLS Roadster will be priced at around $200,000. | Video: Idiot fan jumps over Red Bull F1 race car Posted: 06 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT
There are a lot of things in life that can be counted as daring exploits. This, however, isn’t one of them. A nutjob fan attending a Red Bull sponsored exhibition event in Japan decided that it would be a good idea to jump over a moving Red Bull F1 car, proving that idiocy can always get you your 15 seconds of fame, albeit for all the wrong reasons. As Scuderia Toro Rosso driver, Sebastian Buemi, was driving the Red Bull showcar back to the pits at a reasonably slow 30 mph, the fan jumped from nowhere and proceeded to clear - or at least attempt to - the moving F1 car. Unfortunately, even his best high-jump impersonation was not, ahem, high enough and his legs just ended up clipping the top of Buemi’s race car. Despite his random act of lunacy, the fan suffered no serious injuries, but as the video evidently shows, his stunt will now go down in You Tube infamy as one of the dumbest things anybody could do to get some attention. | Fisker Karma has been delayed yet again for July 2011 Posted: 05 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT Is the Fisker Karma the automotive equivalent of Gran Turismo 5? Sure looks like it after the plug-in luxury sports car’s production date has been set back once again, this time until July. We’ve heard this sordid tale of run-around after run-around before and it can get pretty exhausting, especially when you consider that the Karma’s release date was supposed to happen over a year ago. According to GreenCarReports, Roger Ormisher, director of global communications for Fisker Automotive, was quoted saying that the "first dealer [demonstration vehicles] and customer cars will arrive on these shores in July." So that pretty much rules out the earlier dates of May and June, as was previously announced by the company. It’s disappointing, make no mistake about it. But considering that the company is still in its infancy, a little latitude should be exercised, if only to give these guys time to get their acts together. Then again, it probably isn’t a good business idea to keep delaying the product’s release date when you already raised it’s price before the car even hit the market. This isn’t GT5, which you can just plop down 60 bucks to take home with you. $95,000 is a lot of money for people to part with and continuing to delay the release of the car could turn a lot of people off.
