Spyker Cars becomes Swedish Automobile

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT

We knew something was going on when a Swedish newspaper reported that Volvo was looking into purchasing Saab from Spyker, but the deal didn’t exactly go down like they had stated. Volvo won’t be purchasing the Swedish automaker, but as of June 15, 2011, the Spyker/Saab pair will now be known as Swedish Automobile N.V. (SWAN) after both companies were purchased by the Chinese Pang Da Automobile (Pang Da). Pang Da gave Spyker new life by filling its veins with a €65 million investment for a 24 percent stake in the company.

In a previous statement, Victor Muller, CEO Spyker Cars and Saab Automobile, said: "Based on our discussions with Pang Da we are confident about the possibility of Pang Da obtain regulatory approvals necessary to formalize the transaction. I am very eager to create a solid company with Pang Da, first in the distribution and subsequently in the manufacture of Saab cars in China. It must be stressed that the prepayment Pang Da and sales of Saab cars imported are not subject to approval by the NDRC. The first advance of 30 million has been received by Saab on Tuesday."

Ford GT1000 Twin-Turbo by Hennessey

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Back in the 60s, automotive racing history was about to change when Henry Ford II decided that it was time for America to be well-represented at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. The European domination, most notably that of Ferrari, gave Ford the motivation to built an American race car that could take the fight to the Italian Prancing Horse. And so, the Ford GT project was born and at the 1966 Le Mans race, Ford did the unthinkable, scoring a 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans and setting off a three-year run when the American automaker reigned supreme at the 24-hour endurance race.

Fast forward to 2005 and the production version of the Ford GT - limited as they were - was born under the guise of being the company’s "Centennial Supercar". This, of course, leads us to this year and the Ford GT still holds acclaim for being the only Ford supercar to be built.

It’s omniscient looks, coupled with its standing as a true American original, has made the Ford GT a tuning favorite, particularly from US-based aftermarket companies. One such company, Hennessey Performance Engineering, recently took the task of building performance programs for the venerable supercar, including one that gives the GT a mouth-watering output of 1,000 horsepower. You’d be hard-pressed to find anything more awesome than that.

Details on the Ford GT1000 Twin-Turbo by Hennessey after the jump.

Video: Chevrolet Camaro drifts at 244 mph at Texas Mile

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Kelly Bise has a high-powered Chevrolet Camaro that just can't seem to make its luck at Texas Mile. Once, while on a quarter mile attempt, the car was flying at 220 mph when both its rear tires turned up flat. On another occasion, as his driver was attempting to become the fastest Camaro in a standing mile, the car caught fire at speeds in excess of 243 mph.

Determined to not let past foils get in the way, Bise and his driver named Josh took the high-powered Camaro to Texas Mile for one more attempt at the books. With steely determination and unnerving poise, Josh was able to finish the standing mile with the Camaro unscathed. In the process, he was able to reach a top speed of 244 mph, becoming the fastest car to run during the recently concluded Texas Mile and, in turn, also became the fastest Camaro in the world in a standing mile.

Mad props for the impressive run, buddy. The sideways drift at the end was also a nice touch to conclude the session.

RSC Predator GT

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

German automaker, Rotary Super Cars, took some flak from a lot of people for the design of the Raptor GT, claiming that it looked eerily similar to the design of the Ferrari 599XX. As it turns out, RSC took those words to heart and completely rebooted their whole project, giving their car a new styling and a new name.

The latest incarnation is the Predator GT, a car that looks nothing like a Ferrari now, but has a little of a Lamborghini essence. Some people might be nitpicking about this, but we’re completely on-board with the design of this new supercar, including the aggressive details on the front and back end of the car.

Despite the styling and naming overhauls, the RSC still plans on putting the same monster powertrain under their creation, one that features a Mazda 138 MSP-based four-rotor Wanel engine that produces a nauseating output of 1,184 horsepower. This engine is mated to a sequential 8-speed RSC R-SHIFT transmission controlled by a hydraulic shift system with shift times of 25-35 milliseconds. Given that RSC is planning to build the Predator GT to weigh in at only 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs), this future supercar is poised to have a 0-62 mph time of just under three seconds, putting it in the stratosphere of some of the fastest machines on the planet, including the venerable Bugatti Veyron and the equally irrepressible Koenigsegg Agera R.

RSC originally planned to introduce the prototype of the Raptor GT late last year, but considering all the significant changes done on the whole project, it’s a safe bet that we might have to wait a little longer for the Predator GT to bare its fangs.

Lamborghini-Callaway tie-up yields the 'Razr Hawk R11' golf club

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Back in October, news broke that two pioneering companies from vastly different industries, Lamborghini and Callaway, collaborated to develop forged composite, the lightest yet strongest material that both companies have ever used.

Fast forward to today and the results for both companies are no less inspiring as they are beautiful. Already used on the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Concept, forged composite is a lighter, stronger, and more precise version of both traditional woven carbon fiber or titanium. The material is said to be comprise more than 500,000 intertwined turbostatic fibers per inch that allow it to have a higher threshold for withstanding extreme conditions, something Lamborghini and Callaway are used to.

In the case of the latter, forged composite was used to develop their latest - and most technologically innovative - product yet: the Razr Hawk R11. Aggressively designed and polished in shape, form, and texture, the Razr Hawk R11 offers improved overall performance - its lighter, stronger, and more powerful - over the previous standard-bearer, the R11.

Tests have even showed that the Razr Hawk can hit a tee shot of up to six yards longer than what a standard R11 is capable. Six yards may not look all that impressive, but in the world of golf where every inch matters, it could spell the difference between a contender and a pretender.

Saab Nespresso Design Study

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 03:00 PM PDT

In a perfect world, Saab wouldn’t be embroiled in the mess that they’re in, having to fight for their automotive life while struggling to even hang on by a thread. Unfortunately, the real world is far more brutal than that and for the past few years, Saab has teetered the precarious line of living to sell another day and permanently closing shop.

It’s this sad reality that makes us feel bad, especially when we know the prospects of what Saab could be if they were as fit, healthy, and spry as other automakers. This particular concept study, an amalgamation between Saab and Nespresso designs, comes from the mind of student Eric Leong from Umea University. A Saab sponsored-project, Leong wanted to design a car that takes its inspiration from a non-automotive source: Nespresso, a Nestle-owned company that sells espresso machines, of all things.

The creative young student mixed the design elements and characteristics found on coupes, hatchbacks, and pick-ups while also keeping to mind Saab styling cues, including the aviation-inspired elements, the ’hockey-stick’ C-pillar, a wraparound DLO, and a roofline design that looks similar to the Saab 9-X BioHybrid Concept.

Nespresso-inspired elements on the car can be traced to the rear end with its flexible, dual storage compartment. Likewise, the car was designed with top deck panels with cushions serving as substitute materials to create an open-air, social environment. Incidentally, the same 9-X BioHybrid Concept-inspired roof is covered with solar panels that serves the quizzical purpose of powering the owner’s house when the car is parked.

While we’re not certain as to how that last part works, the whole design of the Saab Nespresso study does give us an indication of what the future would be like if the Swedish brand stood on safer ground.

Perana Z-One

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT

It took a few years in the making, but if we’ve learned anything from the automotive industry, it’s always better to be late than to never show up to the party at all.

So after making its debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, followed by a lengthy delay in its release date, the Zagato-built Perana Z-One is finally ready for its production debut.

Hailing from South Africa, the Perana Z-One is the result of a joined collaboration between Zagato and Perana Performance Group. There’s no word yet on the official release date of the South African sports car, but there have been some rumblings that we might get to see the Z-One for the first time since Geneva in 2009 at the Festival of Speed this coming July in the UK.

Now that we know that the two-seater sports car is well on its way to production, we may need to start saving our hard-earned money to be able to get a piece of one of the 999 Z-One’s scheduled to be built.

More details on the Perana Z-One after the jump.

BMW Z4 by 3D Design

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

You can’t say that the Japanese don’t know how to handle German machinery. Not when a Japanese aftermarket company can turn an already sporty BMW Z4 into a piece of tuning awesomeness.

Gnarly, aggressive, and sexy all at the same time, 3D Design’s new race-inspired body kit for the Z4 speaks volumes on the level of skill the Japanese have for giving cars a fantastic styling makeover. Check out the new duds on this Z4, including a new front splitter, side skirt extensions, a new carbon fiber rear diffuser, a trunk-mounted spoiler, a set of 19" forged wheels, and stainless steel sport exhaust system with valves that provide the added thunder to the entire makeover. Meanwhile, the interior also received a full gauge package that you can find just above the car’s gear lever.

It’s an awesome package even if BMW’s sports roadster was left with its 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and top speed of 155 mph. It now has the look to justify its powerful, workhorse of an engine.

Consider us mightily impressed.
