BMW 1-Series M Coupe "Clockwork Orange"

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

BMW’s M-Series certainly needs no introduction as far as being one of the most popular performance divisions of any automotive brand in the world today.

With a long list of high-powered Beamers under it’s belt, it’s no secret that the M-Series has becoming a tuning favorite, including their most recent member of the family, the 2012 1-Series M Coupe. This particular project, the first for a 1-Series M Coupe, was commissioned by a "Flex///M", a member of the 1addicts forum. As the name of the site suggests, these people are about as close to 1-Series aficionados as you can get and Flex///M’s project called "Clockwork Orange" is living proof of that.

For this particular model, the modifications include a steady mix of aerodynamic and performance improvements, including plenty of carbon fiber used on both the exterior and interior of the car. There’s a Starck Performance carbon fiber ’1m Vision’ hood and a Starck Performance carbon fiber ’1m Vision’ trunk both in Valencia Orange, Icarbon matte kidney grilles, Icarbon carbon fiber seatbacks, a United BMW performance steering wheel, and a set of Morr Wheels Vs8.2 forged carbon wheels.

As for the performance improvements, the 1-Series M Coupe still retains its 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six engine with 335 horsepower at 5,900 rpm and 369 lb/ft of torque with overboost. Despite that, there are still plenty of upgrades to go around, including a new KW suspension, Starck Performance 1M downpipes, a Starck Performance 1M intercooler, a new Afe cold air intake, and a 1M-specific ESS tuning.

All told, this project is a one-off exclusively made for Flex///M. Kind of wish there’s more of this to go around because you can’t have enough tuned-up 2012 BMW 1-Series M Coupes running around our streets.

Seat Leon Supercopa

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Seat showed up to the Wörthersee meeting in Austria with six particularly fiery versions of their Ibiza and Leon models. One of these eccentric creations is the Leon Supercopa, a model that has been inspired by its siblings from the WTCC models.

The Supercopa is powered by the same engine as found in the Leon Cupra R - a 2.0 liter TSI engine - but its output has been increased to 301 HP with a peak torque of 250 lbs-ft. All of this power is sent through a six-speed DSG transmission and a mechanical locking differential to the front wheels. The steel disc brakes with six pistons per unit have diameters of 360 mm (front) and 256 mm (rear). The car features a pretty impressive exterior aerodynamic package along with a lowered ride for a more sporty impression. The cockpit is "the drivers" workstation for the single-brand series that has been running in Germany since 2004."

All races in the 2011 German SEAT Leon Supercopa will once again be run as part of the DTM program.

Mercedes Benz 540K Cabriolet "A"

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

The automotive factories of today utilize computers and robots in order to produce different combinations of cars in short order. The buyer is able to choose different options, colors, and accessories that can all be changed at a moment's notice on the assembly line. Some may consider this customization, but having a specially ordered car in the 1930s was a much different scenario.

In 1936, Mercedes Benz introduced its new 540K model at the Paris Motor Show. Subsequent years would see this car be called on as the most striking Mercedes model ever built. When it came out, this car was not simply sitting on dealers lots to be test driven and sold to the first person with enough money. It was specially ordered and built once the customer had made payment. Recently, one of the rarest models came to auction at RM's Villa d'Este event.

The Cabriolet A model was built for the 14th Maharajah of Indore whom was an avid car collector. More recently, the car was fully restored and has won its fare share of concours events across the country. The rare and beautiful 540K Cabriolet was auctioned for the price of $2,013,000 to one lucky bidder that will undoubtedly be satisfied with his purchase.

Chrysler PT Cruiser with Viper RT/10 engine

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

The Chrysler PT Cruiser is – or should we say, was – a car that you would never mistake for being a powerhouse. Retro-looking, sure. Snorting horsepower? Hardly.

The only way you could give the PT Cruiser some street rep is to take out its four-cylinder mechanical guts and place something akin to a Dodge Viper's powerhouse V10 in it, which, fortunately, is exactly what someone did to their beloved, little hatch. The result is a vehicle that epitomizes substance over style. On the outside, the first thing you'll notice is the fact that this PT Cruiser was turned into a pick-up, which is weird enough on its own considering the retro hatch's unmistakable profile. So without the rear doors and a hatch that has since been replaced with a pick-up bed, the PT Cruiser's new profile lends itself a curious look.

That is until you pop open the hood.

Where a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine that produces 150 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque once resided is now an old 8.0-liter V10 engine that produces 500 horsepower to go with the Viper's six-speed transmission, rear suspension, and steering rack. The car is said to have been built some years back, but given it's uniqueness and downright peculiarity – not to mention the insane power under its hood – it's still something that will catch your attention.

Now is it enough to warrant a bid on eBay for more than the $13,100 price tag currently on display? We say absolutely only because something this weird with that much horsepower is bound to make anyone stand out in a crowd.

Top Gear Season 17 moved to June 26?

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Looks like we may have to wait a couple more weeks to get our Top Gear fix.

Earlier rumored to debut on June 12, everybody’s favorite automotive show is now reportedly set to begin its 17th season on June 26, 2011. The Applause Store - the company that handles tickets for Top Gear - has posted the filming dates for this summer's season of Top Gear with the first episode scheduled for June 22. Since episodes are filmed the Wednesday before they air, we can therefore deduce that the first episode will air on June 26th. That's just 19 days away! Five more episodes will then air each Sunday after that until July 27, which means that the season finale will be aired on July 31. ending on July 31st.

While BBC2 has yet to confirm the season schedule, this timeline looks to be far more legitimate than the earlier date of June 12. So if you’re getting excited about this Sunday, you might have to hold off your expectations for another two weeks.

Hyundai Elantra Coupe

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:30 AM PDT

Last year, Hyundai unveiled the new generation Elantra sedan - a model that featured a pretty impressive exterior design language and a new 1.8-liter inline-four that produces 148 HP and 131 pound-feet of torque. That sedan version will now be followed by a coupe version later this year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which Hyundai is hoping will be a competitor for the Honda Civic Coupe model.

As with the sedan version, the coupe model will be powered by the same 1.8 liter engine, but there will also be a R-Spec version that will be powered by the same 208-hp turbocharged engine that was confirmed for the turbocharged Veloster. The R-Spec version will take on models like the Civic Si.

The Elantra Coupe is expected to be offered in the same trim levels as the sedan: GLS and Limited. Prices for the coupe will be a little higher than the sedan model which starts at $15,195.

Nissan S15 Silvia Lightning Strikes Racing Edition by JUM Lightning

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

The 2011 Toyko Auto Salon was held back in January and somehow this doozy of a car slipped through the cracks. Built off of a 2000 Nissan Silvia, the Lightning Strikes Racing Edition gets taken to a much better place with a bright blue exterior paint job, a monstrous power upgrade, and a spectacular widebody kit.

The original Nissan Silvia was powered by an SR20DET engine prepped with an output of 250 HP. Once JUM Lightning popped the hood and worked their magic, that same engine was able to produce 180 HP more, leaving the grand total at 430 HP at 7000 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque at 5800 rpm! Finishing the engine work is a 6speed gearbox from Nismo GT-LSD.

As for the exterior, JUM Lightning matched the aggressiveness of the engine with a full on widebody kit and an Aragosta Suspension System that was specifically tuned for the FUJI Speedway. The kit is made from dry carbon fiber to support large forces and includes a front bumper, side bumper, a flow rate mounted on the bonnet, and a new set of wheels. Final touches comes as a full titan exhaust manifold, Sparco seats, and Brembo brakes.

Video: Official Forza 4 trailer released at E3 2011

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Gran Turismo, you have been served notice. Forza Motorsport, the long-held bridesmaid of the auto racing game universe, is trying to usurp Gran Turismo’s standing as the king of the hill with the release of their latest iteration to the Microsoft gaming franchise.

The game is Forza 4 and, by God, it’s looking more and more like the fireball of awesomeness it was propped to be, one that should have Sony and Polyphony execs quaking in their boots.

Featuring new technology that has never been adapted to the racing genre, Forza 4 is breaking ground with the Kinect interactive controller technology that will be available in the game for the very first time. If you missed our prior feature regarding the Kinect demonstration done during the recently-concluded Electronic Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas, we don’t know what you’re waiting for.

If you’ve seen it, though, and your appetites have been duly whetted with anticipation, we must tell you that the game isn’t just about the new Kinect capability. It’s got more cars than ever from 80 different automakers. It’s got a couple of new gameplay modes, including one that features Top Gear, and it also has all our favorite circuits on the planet ready to host our video gaming marathons.

The only downside is that the game isn’t scheduled to be released until the fall, testing our patience in the process. But hey, it’s not like we haven’t gone through that whole merry-go-round with GT5 in the past. For now, you can have your names listed for pre-order until the game arrives, and if you’re itching for more videos to watch, the official trailer for the game has now been released.

Hit play and try to keep from drooling.

Porsche Cajun

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Remember when Porsche released the Cayenne? Remember all the people in their Porsche owners club shirts sitting around and telling you about how this new SUV was a disgrace to the Porsche logo and that all the company should design and produce are 911 variants?

While they might have had a point, the Cayenne sold like bottled water and like this water in plastic, it’s completely pointless. People don’t need this much power from something that will be used to haul around families. Yet, it became the automaker’s best selling model, despite its looks.

Now, to put the owners club folks in the mental home, Porsche is created a smaller SUV, the Cajun. No, it’s not intended for people in New Orleans, but it is intended for people who found the Cayenne to be a bit too large and fancied something a bit more crossover like.

Porsche officially confirmed the small SUV in an official statement detailing their hopes for the vehicle: "Under the working name "Cajun", this efficient and sporty model will further expand the world's most successful Porsche segment in the SUV sector. In addition to the new Cayenne, which has clearly consolidated its market position as the most successful sporty SUV in the premium segment, the "Cajun" will also have a very positive impact with its typical Porsche features such as light weight, ease of handling and agility. As an attractive entry model in the Porsche world, the "Cajun" will attract new and even younger customers to the premium brand along with the Boxster, the market leader in the segment of two-seater, mid-size sports cars."

UPDATE 06/07/2011: Looks like the Cajun may be getting its power from a powerful diesel engine from sister brand, Audi. According to Autocar, Porsche is planning on dropping Audi’s 3.0-liter V6 diesel producing 309 bhp and 479 lb-ft of torque into the small SUV. This news comes along with plans to build the Cajun on Audi’s Q5 platform which will end up saving a lot of money and will help bring the two brands closer together.

More details on the Porsche Cajun after the jump.

Largest Recalls in History: Who made #1?

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

Toyota got a lot of crap last year for the millions of vehicles that were recalled due to problems with unintended acceleration, but where would the company fall in a list of the top automotive recalls? Our next piece in the Car Infographics series answers that very question with the largest recalls in our automotive history.

It happens more often than we would like, but recalls are just a part of the automotive business that we all have to become accustomed to. After all, these machines are man-made and as we all know, people can very easily make mistakes. So who tops the list?

Let’s step back to Toyota for a moment. In 2010, the company had to recall 5.3 million vehicles due to reports of the driver side floor mats getting wedged underneath the gas pedal, causing unintended acceleration. Models involved in this recall included the likes of the Camry and Prius, as well as other models ranging from 2004-2010. 5.3 million is a large number, but Toyota only captures the #4 spot.

Hit the jump for the top three position fillers.
