| Posted: 09 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT People usually associate the name Skoda with a family sedan that focuses more on fuel economy and not so much on performance. Those people are going to get the shock of their lives as Skoda is preparing a special Octavia vRS sedan for the world famous Bonneville Speed Week on August 13-20, 2011. The Octavia vRS was built to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its iconic vRS performance flagship badge and to achieve breaking the 200 mph barrier. Skoda has done this with the Octavia’s standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI petrol engine by swapping the standard turbo with a specially designed turbocharger from respected component firm Garret. Adding this turbocharger has dramatically altered the vehicle’s output by adding a tremendous 380bhp and 170 lb-ft of torque for a total of 600 HP and 26-28 PSI of boost pressure. As if the engine updates weren’t enough, Skoda has also spiffed up the exterior of the Octavia with some aerodynamic updates. The vehicle has received a new sub-frame which houses a race prepared intercooler, a reinforced roll cage, a parachute, fire extinguishers, and a window cage. It was then lowered almost 80mm closer to the ground. Robert Hazelwood, Director for Škoda UK, said: "The 10-year relationship between the UK and the vRS badge has been extremely successful. This is a landmark anniversary and going to Bonneville is a fitting tribute." He adds, "It's an ambitious project which might surprise a few people, but Škoda is all about engineering excellence and this car is pushing that to new limits." | Posted: 09 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT After successfully building the world's fastest street-legal supercar - the Maxximus G-Force - back in 2009, partners Marlon Kirby and David McMahan are back in action. However, this time, they have gone very green with the new Maxximus LNG 2000. Not many details have been released for the LNG 2000 as of yet, but we do know that it is breaking the walls set up by petrol engines by running on compressed natural gas and liquid natural gas. That’s right supercar owners; no more getting ripped off at the pump! We still don’t know what kind of performance it will provide, but it is being pegged as the second generation G-Force which clobbered the 0-60mph sprint in 2.1 seconds. The G-Force was by no means green, though. It was powered by a 1600 hp 7.0-liter engine sourced from Chevrolet which boasted if additional performance times of 0-100 mph in 4.5 seconds and 0-100-0 mph in 8.8 seconds. Development for the LNG 2000 is still ongoing, but the company was kind enough to reveal the first image of the "green" vehicle for us to ogle. They are also currently working on another model model - dubbed the Prodigy - which will come with 2000 HP and a $1,000,000 price tag. Considering the G-Force costs $3,000,000, the Prodigy will actually be a steal! No pricing information for the LNG 2000 has been revealed as of yet. Stay tuned! We’ll be following this development of the LNG 2000 closely! Maxximus LNG 2000 originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 9 June 2011 15:00 EST. |
| TrakRok Concept Design Study by Alexei Mikhailov Posted: 09 Jun 2011 07:15 AM PDT Developing an ATV that is suitable for all season off-road mobility might be pretty challenging. However, Alexei Mikhailov - an industrial designer from Humber College in Canada - has overcome this feat with the TrakRok Concept, a hybrid ATV that was a snowmobile initially, but ended up turning into a pretty impressive off roader. The TrakRok ATV features two wheels in the front that are direct driven individually by electric motors,a s well as a direct driven independent track system used for all season applications that is also powered by high powered electric motors. The entire system is runs on sustainable renewable energy using hydrogen fuel cell technology. The fuel cells are situated in the center belly of the vehicle lowering the center of gravity and the fuel cell cluster is liquid cooled by two large radiator intakes in the front of the vehicle. Aside from menacing aesthetics, the intakes provide adequate cooling and in casing protection for the fuel cells from harsh environment. The design mimics a shell-like rib cage which looks really cool. The only problem with this design is that it has about zero chance of ever making it to production. It’s too bad because we think this would actually have a lot of appeal. TrakRok Concept Design Study by Alexei Mikhailov originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 9 June 2011 14:15 EST. |
| Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Biturbo Posted: 09 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT Spy photographers are just about everywhere nowadays, catching future vehicles baring their goodies. The latest spy shots to hit the web are of a Shelby GT500 that has been spotted testing on the Nurburgring track, insinuating that the 2014 model may actually make it on the global market for the first time. Its most notable feature is the larger cores giving way to what could be a forced induction or twin turbo setup. Whichever power pumper it is will be put in with Ford's new 5.0-liter twin-cam V8 which will improve performance, fuel consumption, and emissions making it a triple threat on the market. Other engines will also be available for the Mustang, starting from a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine and ending at the twin-turbo V8. Power for the updated muscle car has not been revealed, but expect it to carry more than the 510 figure in the current GT500. We’re guessing somewhere in the 600 HP range. As far as looks go, Ford is still keeping those changes under wraps. The model featured in the spy shots is actually carrying the Mustang’s existing body while testing the new inner workings of the vehicle. The new model will actually be built on a totally new platform with an independent rear suspension. Expect the new GT500 to be revealed sometime in 2013. | Video: Corvette ZR1 laps the Nurburgring in 7:19.63, taking six seconds off its previous run Posted: 09 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT
Back in 2008, a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 driven by General Motors development engineer, Jim Mero, ran its way around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4. Now, a 2012 ZR1 equipped with new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires has tackled that same run, eclipsing the time set in 2008 by more than six seconds. The ZR1’s new time of 7:19.63 gets that much closer to the record holding 7:18 run of the Porsche GT2 RS, but more importantly, provides the Corvette with ammo against the Dodge Viper ACR (7.19 seconds), the Nissan GTR (7:26.7), Ferrari Enzo (7:25.21), and the Pagani Zonda F Clubsport (7:24.44). For 2012, the Corvette ZR1 is powered by a 6.2 Liter LS9 aluminum block V8 engine with a total of 638 hp at 6500 rpm and 604 lb.- ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. With this output the ZR1 can hit an impressive top speed of 205 mph. | Jay Leno drives the Hennessey Camaro Convertible HPE600 by Hennessey Posted: 09 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT
In the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, the late-night talk show host/car aficionado had the pleasure of chatting with John Hennessey from Hennessey Performance about their latest package for the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible: the HPE600. The HPE600 is powered by a 6.3-liter V8 engine equipped with a TVS2300 supercharger that increases the total output to a total of 602 HP and 605 lb/ft of torque. The resulting boost translates to a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds and a quarter-mile run of 12 seconds at 118 mph. With this kind of power increase, Hennessey had to do very little else to give the car a complete package. New interior items, including special floor mats, embroidered headrests, and an individually numbered plaque were part of the mix, as were blue racing stripes, a lowered ride height, and a set of the company's 20" three-piece alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero tires. The complete package sells for $74,950. Check out the episode of Jay Leno’s Garage to see exactly what this tuned creation can do. Here’s a little spoiler: you will see some burnouts. | Subaru Impreza WRX STI breaks Isle of Man lap record Posted: 09 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT The Isle of Man's 37.75-mile, 200-turn Mountain Race Circuit is one of those tracks that test a person's endurance over a pretty long distance. It's a little more than two-and-a-half times the length of the Nurburgring so you can expect it to be as daunting as any race track in the world, even for the standards of superbikes that race in the circuit every year. That's why we found it surprising to find out that a Subaru Impreza WRX STI broke the lap record for a four-wheeled vehicle in the track after the record stood for 21 years. Driven by former British Rally champion and WRC veteran Mark Higgins, the Impreza WRX STI clocked an impressive - by its standards – time of just under 20 minutes, with an average lap speed of 113 mph, breaking the previous lap record by more than two minutes. Late rally veteran Tony Pond set the previous record back in 1990 while driving a Rover 827 Vitesse. The Subaru Impreza WRX STI was given a shot at breaking the record as part of a new agreement signed by Subaru of America to be the sponsor for the Isle of Man TT races while also becoming the official car of the yearly event. Congratulations to both Subaru and Mark Higgins for the new record and here's to hoping that we won't have to wait 21 years for this record to be broken. | The Top Ten Muscle Cars of the 60s and 70s Posted: 08 Jun 2011 02:00 PM PDT The early 60s all the way up to the 70s was a golden age for the American automotive industry if only for the simple fact that muscle cars were growing not just in number, but in overall stature. The muscle car arms race of the that time yielded plenty of options for customers looking for more power and metal-twisting torque from these vehicles. And the models only grew in popularity as more and more people began clamoring for the biggest, baddest, and most powerful machines. The general appeal these muscle cars offered to the growing American car culture of the time was the opportunity to own powerful cars that could be used for drag racing while also keeping costs at bay. At that time, a number of brands began developing their own models, including legendary names like the Ford Mustang, the Chevrolet Camaro, the Plymouth Barracuda, the Pontiac Trans-Am, and the Dodge Charger, to name a few. While the golden age of American muscle was limited to parts of these two decades, the industry has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in recent years. It’s not going to compare to the 60s or the 70s, but as proven by customer clamoring, the culture of American muscle cars is far from bearing its last legs. To pay tribute to the time where muscle was king of the road - and the drag strip - we have compiled a list of the 10 most memorable muscle cars of the golden age. Check out the list after the jump. | Pagani Zonda F Roadster Clubsport Final Edition Posted: 08 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT The release of Pagani’s new supercar - the Huayra - prompted an immediate memory loss of their previous beast, the Pagani Zonda F. However, the Zonda was not going to go down without a fight and SuperVettura Sales Ltd. in the UK is making sure of that with the new Zonda F Roadster Clubsport Final Edition - number 24 of the original 25 Zonda F Roadster models built back in 2006. The Pagani Zonda F Clubsport Roadster "Final Edition" will be distinguished by a full visible carbon fiber body dressed in black, followed by grey hide for the interior. Some of the original features of the Zonda F were retained such as the folding roof with central carbon fiber spine and the lower canvas areas. The best tool kept from the original model is the 7.3 Liter naturally aspirated AMG engine mated to a manual transmission that together deliver a total of 650 hp. If anyone is interested in purchasing this one of a kind vehicle, then they’d better break open more than just a few piggy banks. This beauty is currently selling for $2,300,000, which is well worth it considering its exclusivity.
