Triango Revelation Supercar Concept is a Geometrical Oddity

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

With the growing number of supercars coming out of the woodwork from a plethora of different countries, supercar makers and wannabes alike are trying to find new and different ways to make their vehicles stand out. We’ll let you decide which category Jasuka - a Hungarian designer - falls in with the release of the first images of the Triango Revelation. This future supercar has been in the works for about three years and with the help of Urban Motorsport England - also a Hungarian company despite the confusing name - Jasuka is prepared to enter the production stage of his new model.

Its name - Triango - was inspired by its triangular exterior design which we can’t decide whether we think is interesting enough to be cool or out-of-this-world enough to just be ugly. We imagine this is what a supercar would look like if it started a fight with a giant can opener, so we guess that answers that question. On the up side, the interior is a lot cleaner with silver trim and walnut-colored leather, making the triangular motif a bit easier to swallow.

Of course, making this a car that anyone would want to have in their garage is the customized V8 twin turbo Hayabusa engine that delivers an impressive 1000 HP at 10,000 rpm. This dynamic engine is mated to a customized transmission system with an F1 shifter system, automatic start, a race computer, and a full rear wheel direction.

The Triango Revelation is currently in the final development stages and is preparing for its official debut. Jasuka plans to build the super car in a limited run of 12 units and order books are now open if anyone is interested.

Lotus Esprit

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

The legend is back! Lotus has unveiled today the new Esprit sports car. Described as the "ultimate Lotus," the new Esprit will go into production at the end of 2012, with first deliveries beginning in late 2013, early 2014. Lotus announced an estimated price of £110,000 ($175,000 at the current rates).

The 2013 Esprit will be powered by a 5.0 liter V8 engine that delivers an impressive 620 HP and 720 NM of torque. With a weight of 1450 kilos, the new Esprit will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3,4 seconds and will hit a top speed of 205 mph.

"One has to be very careful when taking on the challenge of reinventing such an iconic classic as the Esprit – everyone has an opinion. There's a fine balance between acknowledging the greatness of the past whilst at the same time rapidly leaping forward to the future and ensuring that this car not only does the name Esprit justice but also the Lotus brand. I think we've managed to find the balance and in doing so created a new icon, a car people will find hard to resist."

UPDATE 06/13/2011: During the recent unveiling of the Evora S model in San Jose, Lotus Cars USA PR boss, Kevin Smith, has confirmed that the Esprit supercar will indeed be put into production, but not before late 2013 or even early 2014. Lotus is going to need that extra time to drop in their an in-house V8 engine and to ensure that the vehicle has both a manual and a dual-clutch transmission.

As previously reported, Lotus’ in-house V8 engine will will deliver between 550 - 570 HP and will be used for both the Esprit and, as Smith confirmed, an even more exotic Elite. (AutoGuide)

Press release after the jump.

Lamborghini Gallardo SE Twin-Turbo Project by Bradan

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Even if a 2006 Lamborghini Gallardo SE is considered an old horse when compared to its newer brethren, it’s still one of the fastest and most powerful Lamborghinis you’ll ever find. With a 5.0-liter engine that produces 520 horsepower, the Gallardo SE has performances numbers that shouldn’t be laughed at, but as far as some customers are concerned, 500 ponies just doesn’t cut it anymore. One such owner of a 2006 Gallardo SE apparently isn’t too thrilled that his Italian supercar only has 500 horsepower under its hood, so he decided to enlist the services of American tuner, Bradan, to turn his supercar into an 800-horsepower beast.

To make this goal a reality, Bradan is rebuilding the engine while reinforcing it to handle the increased boost pressure that comes with it. On top of that, the US tuner will also design, develop, and build a new turbo system to increase the car’s power similar to how an OEM power curve does it.

There’s plenty of laborious work and tedious research involved in such a build and there’s plenty more work to do before the car is officially ready for its maiden run at the race track. For now, the tuning company has released some photos of the work being done on the car, including a video of the Gallardo SE undergoing a baseline test.

We’’ll be sure to update you on any further developments from Bradan.

Mazda to develop future rotary sports car with Audi?

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

The fact that Mazda is well into their plans to terminate the current RX-8 sports car is common knowledge at this point. However, if eliminating their only rotary-powered vehicle is in the works, why is the company still working on their Wankel engine?

There are whispers fluttering around that Mazda may be working on a new sports car model with the help of none other than Audi. Audi just released their A1 hatchback-based e-tron concept, which features a 254cc Wankel range-extender located beneath the trunk floor, so these latest rumors suggest that the two will be getting into bed together on a new rotary sports car featuring similar technology.

Mazda’s next sports car was originally thought to be the RX-9, but recent news has gotten people thinking that Mazda may be working on a successor to the RX-7 instead. Whichever model they choose to roll with, Inside Line is reporting that Mazda’s next rotary sports car will hopefully achieve just 130 g/km of CO2 compared to the 299 g/km of the current RX-8. Other features of the new sports car may include micro-hybrid technology, auto stop/start, lightweight materials, and laser ignition - which eliminates the use of spark plugs, ultimately making it easier to seal the Wankel’s trochoidal combustion chamber for improved efficiency and reduced hydrocarbon emissions.

Honda CR-Z by Mugen

Posted: 18 May 2011 06:00 AM PDT

The hybrid craze has gone to new levels and everyone wants in on the action. Unlucky for those that are late in joining the game, Mugen has come around with yet another version of the Honda CRZ, promising to transform the vehicle into one "hot hybrid hatch." Their newest package comes with a killer supercharger that takes the CRZ to a greater level of performance, and possibly a better fuel economy as well.

The Honda CRZ Mugen will still come with its standard 1.5L four cylinder engine, but will get the boost in power from a new supercharger. Standard outputs for the CRZ come in at 113 HP and 107 lb-ft of torque for just the engine, while adding the standard hybrid package will get those outputs up to 122 HP and 128 lb-ft of torque. Mugen has taken their upgrade a step further by developing their own electronic package that, together with the supercharged engine, will deliver a total of 197 HP and 181 lb-ft of torque. Just like there’s no sex in the champagne room, there’s no slacking over at Mugen’s place either.

Mugen takes their package a step further by adding induction and exhaust upgrades that they hope will improve the hatch’s current stats of 38mpg and 117g/km CO2. They have also added front and rear five-stage adjustable dampers, bigger brakes, and lightweight 17in forged Mugen GP alloys. Aesthetically, the CRZ will get Mugen-spec front and rear bumpers, a large rear wing, and side skirts. The company has also promised a "large reduction in overall weight."

The Honda CRZ Mugen will make its first grand appearance at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. As of right now, it is just a one-off prototype, but Mugen says they are willing to offer it in a limited number production if there is enough interest. At the very least, we should be able to order some of the parts used as aftermarket supplies.

UPDATE 05/18/2011: Mugen has unveiled the first official images of the CR-Z Mugen before the car’s official debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. While the tuner has yet to say anything about the official specifications, Colin Whittamore from MUGEN Euro said: "We’ve retained the three driving modes from the standard car and economyranges from 50+mpg in ’eco’ mode to mid-30 mpg when tapping into the supercharged power in a special ’MUGEN’ mode."

Bentley Continental GT Speed

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 04:00 AM PDT

It’s been about six months since Bentley’s debut of their facelifted Continental GT luxury coupe so it seems only natural that the company would now be hard at work testing the Speed version of the vehicle. Another seemingly natural fact would be that spy photographers were on hand to catch the speedier GT before its world debut later this year, most likely at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The prototype caught testing features a redesigned front bumper that makes it look sportier and even more aggressive. There also seems to be some changes in the exhaust system that clearly indicate a greater output. The current GT Speed model is powered by a twin-turbocharged W12 that develops 600 HP, so expect to see at least the same output - if not more - in the new model.

Along with some additional power, the 2012 Continental GT Speed will also benefit from a lighter body to boost fuel efficiency and a few interior upgrades including new seats and a new navigation system situated in the updated dash.

Stay tuned for more details on the 2012 Continental GT Speed!

Microsoft set to introduce the Xbox 360 Wireless Speed Wheel

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

We already know that the fourth installment of Forza Motorsport - Forza 4 - is already scheduled to hit the shelves sometime in October. Today, Microsoft is giving us even more reason to be excited for the month of Halloween to come.

In a move that is curiously close to the launch date of Forza 4, Microsoft will also be introducing its new Wireless Speed Wheel for the Xbox 360. The new device is compatible to all racing games and not just Forza 4, but it does seem like Microsoft is pegging their new device to be purchased as some sort of ’package deal’ together with the game.

Timely marketing and a stroke of genius, if you ask us.

According to Microsoft, the Wireless Speed Wheel can be controlled intuitively with precise steering, standard controller buttons and triggers, and feedback vibration when things go awry out on the track.

In a press release, Microsoft described the Wireless Speed Wheel as a new innovation that balances the realism of a wheel with the feel of a controller for greater user edge in game play.

"With trigger buttons for gas and brake, combined with a rumble feedback, the Xbox 360 Wireless Speed Wheel provides intuitive standard controller buttons that immerse the driver into the game, whether you like to white knuckle it down the race track with your hands at "10 and 2" or "9 and 3."

The new device is expected to begin shipping to retailers all over the world on September 26 at a cost of $59.99. Something tells us that the sales of this new wireless steering wheel will go hand-in-hand with the volume of sales for Forza 4.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Leaving the other debuts of the Chicago Auto Show in the dust is the brand-spanking new Camaro ZL1 - the most powerful Camaro ever. This beautiful beast is powered by a LSA 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine that produces an estimated 550 HP and 550 lb.-ft. of torque which is just enough to get our hearts racing and our fingers twitching to grab the wheel.

"Camaro ZL1 is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously," said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "It's the most technically advanced Camaro ever, so we've chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history."

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be distinguished by a new front fascia, hood with air extractors, and a signature center section constructed of carbon fiber rendered in satin black finish. Completing the look is a set of 20-inch wheels and exhaust tips with ZL1 badge on the grille, hood, and brake calipers.

UPDATE 06/13/2011: It’s been a few months after the Camaro ZL1’s official debut and Camaro5 is now offering new details on the most powerful Camaro ever. Apparently, the ZL1 will not only be offered with an automatic transmission, but also with the Performance Traction Management from the ZR1. In addition to this tidbit, it seems that the estimated "550 HP" is also not correct, as Al Oppenheiser has confirmed that the output will be higher than the 550 of the CTS-V. Production will begin in the first quarter of 2012.

Mercedes SLK55 AMG

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 01:00 AM PDT

Shortly after the release of the 2012 Mercedes SLK-Class, members of the automotive community began wondering what the AMG versions would be carrying under their bonnets. Thankfully, our spy photographers were on hand to capture the next generation SLK55 AMG and hear the thunderous sounds exiting its voluptuous engine.

It seems as if the 2012 Mercedes SLK55 AMG will be sporting a V8 engine under it hood, more than likely the 5.5L twin-turbo V8 found in the new S63, CLS63, and CL63 AMG. This engine will deliver horsepower in the area of 400-450, up from the 355 HP the Mercedes currently delivers. This engine will be mated to a 7-speed sportshift automatic.

The 2012 Mercedes SLK55 AMG will also be seeing some other changes such as an improved hood/nose shape with a new front spoiler, a new air dam with larger intake inlets, and rectangular quad-tipped tailpipes. The Mercedes will also get its usual array of large and shiny forged alloy wheels, big brakes, AMG badging, and color options.

Video: Allan McNish crashes Audi R18 TDi in horrific fashion at Le Mans

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

As a race car driver, nothing is scarier than crashing into a barrier, sending your car airborne, seemingly helpless to fight the laws of physics that take over. Ultimately, as a driver, all you can do is brace for the impact, and pray that the ensuing damage is about as minimal as it could possibly be.

During the first part of Le Mans, Audi driver, Allan McNish, was involved in a horrific accident after the Scotsman accidentally bumped his R18 TDI into a Ferrari 458 Italia. The collision caused the R18 TDI to barrel into the sand trap, crashing the barrier and sending just about every piece of the race car flying everywhere, including near a group of reporters who probably didn’t find it thrilling to see a debris of metal, carbon fiber, and tires raining down on them.

The only positive outcome from this accident - and given the circumstances, it was the best anyone could have hoped for - was that no one, including McNish, was injured from the spectacular, albeit horrific crash.

Just goes to show just how thin the line is in auto racing. One second, you’re posting flying lap after flying lap and before you know it, your race car is doing an airborne cartwheel while you sit helpless behind the wheel praying for the best outcome possible.
