Video: BMW 1-Series M Coupe vs. walls

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 03:11 PM PDT

3.

BMW made us the pleasure to reveal a new video of their latest 1-Series M Coupe. This time putting the sports coupe versus a series of concrete walls. Oh, do not worry, it will not try to smash them! But with some pretty cool drift, a professional driver behind the wheel and tons of talent, the images in this video are breathtaking.

We will not ruin the surprise and tell you what the car really does in this video, but we promise you, every second of this video will be a real challenge for you. A little advice though: do not try this at home under no circumstances. Remember that behind the wheel there is a guy that did this all his life.

And just as a reminder, the 1-Series M Coupe is powered by a twin-turbocharged, all-aluminum, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine that delivers an impressive 335 HP at 5,900 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm.

Video: Nissan Leaf Nismo RC test session

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 03:02 PM PDT

A few days ago Nissan announced that the Leaf Nismo RC will make two demonstration runs at the Le Mans series: the first at 21:15 on Thursday, June 9th and the second at 12:10 on Saturday, June 11th local time. And, as to prepare the event, on June 6 the EV racing car has been put to a test session at Sodegaura Forest Raceway. And it did it quite impressive we might add. In the video you will see an on-board camera shot, but also the driver’s testing impression.

The Leaf Nismo RC is powered by a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor that delivers a total of 107 HP and a peak torque of 207 lbs-ft. At the first testings, the Nismo RC concept made the 0 to 62 mph sprint in 6.85 seconds and hit a top speed of 93 mph. In racing condition, it has an autonomy of 20 minutes.

Video: 57-car hooning fest holds record for simultaneously performing donuts

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

While the rest of the world enjoys a different kind of donut - one that involves a lot of glazed sugar - us gearheads only care about the kind of donut that results in burnt tires and lots of smoke.

So when we chanced upon this video of 57 cars doing a simultaneous donut in Australia, we couldn’t help but wonder whether this was some kind of world record. After carefully digging through the archives of the Guinness Book of World Records, we found out that this 57-strong exhibition of smoke-filled donut madness is in fact the record-holder for the most cars performing the same stunt simultaneously.

This public demonstration broke the previous record of 29 cars, which was set in Rendlesham, UK a little over two years ago on March 1, 2009. Less than a year later - January 23, 2010 - this 57-car simultaneous donut broke the record at the Queensland Raceway in Willowbank, Australia.

Actually, the original number for this whole meet was supposed to be 66 cars, but nine cars were left out from the final tally because they couldn’t perform donuts for the required time of 10 seconds.

Either way, a record’s a record at the end of the day. And even if 66 wasn’t the final number, 57 is still a pretty awesome sight to behold.

Check out the 29-car simultaneous donut in the UK after the jump.

Video: Jon Olsson teaches his Lamborghini Murcielago not to fear the water

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 11:00 PM PDT

Teaching kids how to swim is hard enough as it is, but when you try to teach the same thing to a Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV, people will automatically assume you’ve lost any semblance of sanity.

Undaunted, Jon Olsson took the proverbial book and threw it out the window at the recent Gumball 3000 run from London to Istanbul. On his way back to his home in Stockholm, Olsson encountered a few obstacles in the way for his prized supercar, none more daunting than a river crossing that required his Murcielago to brave the deep and dirty waters. With nothing in the way of losing all his marbles, Olsson decided that the best way home was going full steam ahead, which is exactly what he did with the Murcielago, driving it straight into the water for what seemed like a wet eternity.

Fortunately, it only lasted a few seconds and the Murcielago LP670-4 was back in dry land in no time. Even better, Olsson managed to make the 3,000-mile drive back to Stockholm with nothing less than clear roads.

We admire his cojones for taking his Murcielago out for a dip in the water, but we seriously advise anybody who’s thinking of doing the same to, well, not. The reward isn’t as great as the potential risk.

Chopard LUC Engine One Tourbillon "Only Watch" Special Edition

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT

Swiss luxury timepiece maker Chopard is celebrating their 150th anniversary and as a tribute to this momentous occasion, the company has released a motorsports-inspired special edition watch that should have its fans drooling profusely.

The limited edition L.U.C. Engine One Tourbillon was unveiled at the recent Only Watch Charity Auction to benefit research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dressed in a black and yellow-toned version of the Engine One Tourbillon model, the Only Watch limited edition is powered by an L.U.C Calibre 1TRM 'motor'. It features a look similar to an engine block and is mounted on silent-blocks with a mechanical hand-wound tourbillon movement that was exclusively designed, developed, and built by Chopard. The mechanical hand-wound tourbillon movement beats at a cadence of 28,800 vibrations per hour while driving displays of the hours, minutes, seconds. It also has a power reserve that lasts for about 60 hours.

Staying true to the motorsports inspiration, the engine block on the face of the watch features the Chopard signature while the DLC titanium case features alternating matte and polished finishes and has been designed to be water-resistant of up to 50 meters. Even the watch's dial bears inspiration from the motoring universe, as does the hand-sewn black alligator leather strap that comes with four reinforced inserts bearing inspiration from car seats found on classic racing cars. The slightly curved lugs that have been screwed into the case carry the effect of streamlined car wings to provide a snug and perfect fit on the wearer.

No word yet on how much the watch fetched at the Only Watch Charity Auction, but judging by the look and painstaking detail in developing the piece and the use of a plethora of expensive items, we wouldn't be surprised in the least bit if this fine piece of craftsmanship fetches a price north of six digits.

Video: A Supercharged Chevrolet Corvette Z06 takes on a Koenigseg CCXR: Shock Ensues

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

A standard Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is powered by a 7.0-liter LS7 V8 that delivers a total of 505 HP, which isn’t bad at all. Of course, supercharging this bad boy to an impressive 700 HP makes the American sports coupe jump a few levels to possibly match wits with Sweden's Koenigsegg CCXR and its 1024 HP 4.7 L twin-supercharged V8 engine.

Place these two cars side by side in a one mile drag race and more than likely, onlookers would place their bets on the CCXR. Before that happens, however, it’s important to know that typically the Koenigsegg does the 1/4 mile in less than 11 seconds and in this video, it only managed to do it in 12.4 seconds. Will the driver factor affect the outcome of the race? Watch the video to find out!

Tag Heuer Monaco V4 Titanium Chronograph

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

The Tag Heuer Monaco V4 range of watches is by all accounts, one of the most sought-after Tag Heuer watches we've seen in a while. First introduced in 2009 with the release of the Platinum Edition, the Monaco V4 range sprang another version a year later called the New Generation Rose Gold Edition". And now that it's 2011, the Swiss timepiece maker has decided to introduce the latest addition to the line: the Titanium Limited Edition.

Sporting the same 41mm "New Generation" V4 case, the Titanium edition differentiates itself by the use – and plenty of it – of titanium on a number of its parts, including the case, the hour markers, the hands, the crown, and the folding buckle. On top of that, the watch also features a mix of Ruthenium and Ceramic with the former used as the black coating on the ridged dial of the watch while the latter runs along the side of the watch.

As a special edition watch that's limited to only 200 units, the Tag Heuer Monaco V4 Titanium Edition won't come cheap. Prices have yet to be announced, but it is looking to fetch a price tag of about $120,000. The watch is set to become available in October, which means that anybody with any remote interest in buying this watch will have about four months to save up for the purchase.

Mini Electric Hummer Golf Cart minimizes the Hummer's greatest faults

Posted: 11 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

It’s been over a year since the last Hummer rolled off the production line, ending the gas-guzzling era of the oversized and intimidating vehicle. Now, in a production more ironic than Congressman Anthony Weiner actually showing off his wiener, General Motors has unveiled an electric golf cart version of a Hummer for all of those men in plaid pants that want to display their machismo on the course. The MEV Hummer HX is now on sale for a bargain price - when compared to a full size Hummer - of $16,000.

The MEV Hummer HX electric golf cart was named after the HX concept revealed by GM in 2008. It is powered by a 3.75hp electric motor, but a $1,475 5.5hp electric motor is also available as an upgrade.

The model comes standard with upholstery embroidered with the H2 name, a custom floor kit, polished chrome wheels, side rails, a rear license plate, a painted front grille, H2 logos on the sides and rear, a HUMMER stamped rear bumper, and an H2 body kit licensed by General Motors. The HX MEV can also be ordered in a 6 passenger limo version for $3,874 or an 8 passenger version for $4,974.

Hit the jump for a video of the Mini Electric Hummer in action.

Hublot BB Watch

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 11:00 PM PDT

We’ve seen a lot of expensive timepieces in these pages, some more audacious while others literally scream "bling." However, stop us if you think that you’ve seen anything remotely close to what Hublot’s new BB Watch is bringing to the table. More importantly, do you have €2 million ($2.9 million) to spare?

The watch is, without question, one of the most expensive watches we’ve ever laid our peepers on. Rightfully so too, considering that the watch is made from 18 karat white gold and comes with over 140 karats of diamonds made from 637 individual-cut ’baguette’ diamonds that have been placed piece-by-piece together without any spaces in between.

Take a few seconds to look at that watch and just study how all those pieces are actually diamonds. Crazy, indeed.

According to Hublot, the watch took over 2,000 man hours to finish with 45 gem-cutters working on it. On top of all the bling that makes up the entire piece, this €2 million financial torpedo comes with a tourbillion movement and an offset hour and minute indicator.

And to justify just how exclusive this timepiece is, it’s the only one of its kind with F1 czar Bernie Ecclestone showing off the watch at the recent Monaco Grand Prix. The whole Hublot and Formula 1 partnership is yielding tremendous press for both parties and if you happen to have €2 million lying around, you can make a run for this exclusive watch at Zegg & Cerlati's premier suite in Place de Casino, Monaco.
