Ford Cobra Snakehead by Andrus Ciprian

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Some may say that Ford will have to step up its game if it’s going to compete with Chevrolet’s plans for a new Camaro model every six months. To those people we say, if the second generation GT supercar and the varying versions of the Mustang aren’t enough, then check out this proposed model from designer Andrus Ciprian. His all-new lightweight sports car - the Cobra Snakehead - could just be the high-top model needed to win over some votes from the Camaro clan.

It may not look like your typical Ford supercar, but Ciprian’s two-seater concept does carry over some of Ford's latest design language, albeit taken a bit to the extreme. This new design language is already present in the latest Fiesta and Focus models, so you’ll see a resemblance to their design on the front end of the Cobra Snakehead. Its extreme muscular stance with those huge, bubble wheel arches and kamm tail design inspired by the classic lines of the original GT40s would put even the beefy Mustang to shame. The design is even more aggressive than the proposed GT supercar.

For power, Ciprian envisions a front mounted V8 for the Ford Cobra Snakehead, so naturally we would of the aluminum 5.4 Liter supercharged V8 found in the GT500. This engine produces 550 HP and 510 lb-ft of torque, but is rather close to the hybrid powertrain speculated for the future Ford GT.

Bottomline: We think the Ford Cobra Snakehead looks amazing, but chances of it becoming a new model for Ford are slim to none. However, we would like to see some of its aggressive design carried over to the new Ford GT. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray unveils 'The Batmobile'

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Gordon Murray is an iconic designer in the auto industry because of his previous work with the equally legendary McLaren F1. As a man that has long built a reputation as one of the best designers in the industry, Murray’s latest project involves the design of a car that’s arguably more famous than even the McLaren F1: the Batmobile.

Featuring aerodynamics that were inspired by Formula One, the two-seater Batmobile was designed and built for a different purpose than what we’d hope. No, we’re not going to see this car patrol our cities from criminals, nor are we going to see it on the silver screen anytime soon. Instead, this particular Batmobile will grace the stage in the Broadway musical, BATMAN Live.

In addition to the F1-sourced aerodynamic built, this Batmobile also comes with an eco-friendly hydrogen fuel cell powertrain and, in true Caped Crusader fashion, it also has plenty of gadgets and gizmos that would make Adam West proud. Murray made all the sketches and design details of the car, but was not responsible for the actual build of the Batmobile. That task was left to a London-based independent fabrication shop.

While we were surprised to find out Gordon Murray’s involvement in such a project, we’d be the last people to ever question the master’s work, especially if it involves the Dark Knight’s ride.

Check out the Batmobile’s official unveiling in London after the jump.

'Jackass' star Ryan Dunn dies in car crash

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 04:00 AM PDT

’Jackass" star Ryan Dunn has reportedly died after being involved in a car crash in Pennsylvania earlier this morning. According to TMZ as confirmed by Bam Margera’s mom, Dunn and an unidentified person died after crashing on Route 322 and New Street in West Goshen Township around 3am in what appeared to be Dunn’s Porsche 911 GT3. It is unclear who the driver of the vehicle was, but reports are stating that the vehicle erupted into flames and was later towed away as the crumbled mess seen in the picture above.

In a disturbing twist, Dunn - most known for his stunt in the first ’Jackass’ movie where he strategically placed a Hot Wheels car inside his bum - had apparently tweeted a photo of himself with a couple of buddies a few hours earlier. The photo showed all three gentlemen engaging in what looks to be a few alcoholic beverages. There’s been no word as to whether or not alcohol was the culprit, but other sources are also claiming that the vehicle was traveling at a high speed of 110 mph when the crash occurred. Either way, we’re sure investigations are underway to determine the main factor behind this sad event.

We’ll keep you posted on this story as it develops.

TopSpeed Rendering: 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

1.

As we all sit back and eagerly await the grand debut of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, creative minds are at their desk bringing the future car’s design to light in their own renditions. As other renderings have proven to be a tad too aggressive compared to the milder changes found in the Impreza Design Concept, we’ve come up with this prediction of the future Impreza WRX STI.

The 2012 Impreza will feature a hexagonal grille with spread wings in the center and hawk eye-style headlights. The rear will get sharp-edged rear lights and a new taillamp. The STI version will also get fender flares, a top-mount intercooler, and a massive wing on the back.

The concept debuted with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated Boxer engine mated to a Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), but don’t expect to see the same for the production model. The WRX STI is expected to carry a turbocharged version of the 2.5 liter boxer engine with more than 305 HP on tap. The engine will be mated to a fully synchronized close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission.

We expect the 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX to debut in late 2011, with sales beginning in early 2012

Mauro Calo breaks the record for the longest car drift

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

We apparently couldn’t have picked a better time to get a little drifting crazy because, as of June 19, 2011, Mauro Calo has officially entered the Guinness World Book of World Records with the longest car drift. Calo and his completely unmodified Mercedes C63 AMG sports sedan have smashed the existing World Record by 394 meters achieving a total distance of 2308 meters. This feat will get his name scrawled on the record books, adding yet another title to his established driving career.

To achieve the record breaking distance, Mauro chose part of the Handling Circuit at Mercedes-Benz World, Weybridge Surrey. The circuit provided a complete 360 degree circle of tarmac which saw him complete almost 8 laps.

Andrew Mallery, Commercial Operations Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars commented: "When Mauro approached us to hold his record breaking attempt on the circuit at Mercedes-Benz World we were happy to offer him the support. He has been a valuable member of the driving experience team for several years and is a respected driver in the industry, so there was no doubt he would achieve his aim".

Job well done, Sir!

Future Porsche 911 Targa 4S may get old school Targa option

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Porsche hasn’t offered the fixed Targa roof option on the ever popular 911 model since 1996 when it got replaced by a sliding glass roof version on the 993 models. Before that, automakers were quivering at the thought of the Department of Transportation banning convertibles so the Targa roof was invented to beat the system. That fear ended up being entirely unwarranted and the Targa top, made popular by the Porsche Targa, started to fade off into the distance. Now, a couple of German magazines are jump-starting the rumor mill with whispers of a fixed roof Porsche Targa comeback for the new generation 911. Could it be so?

The way we see it, the idea of bringing back the real Targa option isn’t very likely in today’s market. More of the concepts that are being brought out tend to have a more modern design and for a major automaker like Porsche to revive a concept that is way past its expiration date seems unlikely. We have a feeling that the current glass plates are here to stay. That being said, if Porsche were to go the vintage route and bring back the Targa option, it would be interesting to see its response. It could be a huge success, or it could leave people shaking their heads like they did when the Cayenne and Panamera first came out.

Either way, we expect to see the first models in the 911 line-up in September. At the point, we’ll get all of our answers as to Porsche’s decision on the matter. Stay tuned!

McLaren MP4-12C sold out for the next 3 years

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

The McLaren MP4-12C made quite an impact at its official launch back in 2009. People all over were very impressed with the vehicle and success seemed to be a sure thing, but we don’t know if anyone - including McLaren themselves - anticipated to see the supercar sell out so quickly. According to Ian Gorsuch, Regional Director of McLaren Automotive, the launch of the MP4-12C on the Chinese market will have to be delayed until 2013 because the company does not have enough cars. In fact, the MP4-12C is sold out for the next three years

Initial plans were to produce 1,000 units a year, but Gorsuch says this number may go up slightly depending on circumstances. In the same breath, however, Gorsuch added: "We want to produce less cars than the competition. The key is making the dealership profitable. We will produce less cars but the dealers must have more cars than the competition because the long-term goal is profitability."

The MP4-12C is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 592 HP at 7,000rpm and 443 lb-ft. of torque between 3,000 and 7,000rpm. It will reach 60mph in 3.3 seconds and can hit a top speed of 205. The first customers will receive their cars in December 2011, but if you haven’t placed your order yet then don;t expect to get one for another three years.

Video: Tanner Foust's record-setting practice jump almost turns into disaster

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

By now we’ve seen the footage of Tanner Foust, aka Hot Wheels’ ’Yellow Driver’, and his remarkable record-setting jump for the longest of a four-wheeled vehicle at the Indianapolis 500.

The feat in itself is very impressive considering the dangers and risks involved in such a daredevil stunt. But while we applauded and congratulated Foust for his courageous derring-do, what we didn’t know at that time was that the whole jump almost never happened.

In a recent video that was just released by Hot Wheels, the company took us back to one of Foust’s previous practice sessions and showed us just how close he came to severely crashing his four-wheeler.

The video goes into detail about how a perfect jump is supposed to happen - Foust was supposed to hit the ramp at a speed of 109 mph and continuing to accelerate - and how Foust got it wrong on one of his attempts, a mistake that almost proved fatal were it not for the modified suspension system in the four-wheeled vehicle.

Check out the video and watch how a practice stunt that almost went wrong could have severely injured one of Top Gear USA’s hosts.
