McLaren MP4-12C GT3

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

McLaren is making its way back into the GT sports car racing scene with a limited number of GT3 racing cars based on the MP4-12C sports car. These models will be designed and developed by McLaren and CRS Racing, and should make their first racing debut in the 2012 European FIA GT3 Series.

"The 12C's architecture and design was always aimed at high-performance and ease of maintenance - two key criteria for potential customers. Combine that with the vast amount of racing experience in our automotive team, and CRS Racing's specialist development experience, and the 12C GT3 should be an exciting proposition for the top teams planning to race in GT3 from 2012."

McLaren is confident that the MP4-12C’s revolutionary lightweight one-piece moulded carbon chassis, high levels of downforce and aerodynamic performance, and focus on form and function make it an obvious choice to bring back racing success to the McLaren name. The last win McLaren had was in the McLaren F1 GTR when it won the Lemans Series 15 years ago. The MP4-12C GT3 will be the first McLaren car built for FIA GT series racing since the McLaren F1 GTR finished production in 1997.

UPDATE 05/05/2011: At yesterday’s official launch of the new MP4-12C GT3 race car, managing Director Antony Sheriff talked about the company’s future plans and we like what we heard. Turns out, the company has plans to offer a road legal version of the GT3. It will be limited to about 20 units and will be put on sale at a price higher than $500K.

In an interview with Inside Line Sheriff also said that McLaren doesn’t have any plans to "over-egg it" with the MP4-12C. A roadgoing McLaren is in the works, but the car will not get various models like Porsche did with the 911.

UPDATE 06/30/2011: The McLaren MP4-12C GT3 will make its world debut at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed, held from June 30, 2011 - July 3, 2011. The model has received a front radiator, which increases the maximum ambient temperature at which the car can run, along with a new gearbox cooler mounted on the rear Aerodeck. Check out the modified racer in the 16 new high res images that have been added to our picture gallery!

Bugatti Altess Concept by Amadou Ndiaye Pulls Double Duty

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT

These days, everything needs to have more than one purpose. Our cell phones double as date books and mini-computers for access to our emails, our televisions sets now have the ability to become a fully-stocked video rental shop, and even our refrigerators can come with digital calendars and photo albums. With all of our technology expanding their range of use, it seemed only natural for industrial designer, Amadou Ndiaye, from Montreal, Canada to come up with a Bugatti concept that served its own dual purpose as well.

The Bugatti Altess Concept is more than just a car; it’s actually two cars in one. The first variation of the vehicle is a fully enclosed grand tourer that, with a few adjustments, can be transformed into a hardcore gentleman's racer where the driver and passenger sit in the open air with only a small windscreen for protection. This transformation is achieved by removing the hood, roof, windows, and rear quarter panels and replacing them with a lightweight single-piece panel that allows to the sun to stream right in. A discreet spine bisects the car to keep it intact during the removal and addition of parts. The design for the concept was inspired by the 1930s Bugatti Atlantic, which was considered the most beautiful pre-war vehicle.

The process for transformation is kind of cool, as is having both a coupe and a roadster in one model, but as for seeing it in production form, that’s just not going to happen.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Berzerk by SR Auto Group

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 06:00 AM PDT

The dog days of summer are just about here and SR Auto Group is preparing for the heat with a cool new "LP560-4 Berzerk" package based on the Lamborghini Gallardo.

A car such as the Gallardo cannot be trusted to just about anybody, but SR Auto Group has consistently prepared dominating packages for the super car and their latest project is certainly no different. Being a natural beauty to begin with, the LP560-4’s body was accentuated with the use of clean, sophisticated lines provided by a two-tone finish front bumper, carbon fiber side skirts, and a carbon fiber rear spoiler. The polished look was then capped off with an Ocean Blue paint job and new set of Monotec T04 wheels offered in size 20" and painted in a gloss black finish.

No updates were provided for the supercar’s 5.2 liter 560 HP V10 engine, but the sounds reverberating from the vehicle get a deeper, more defined tone with a new RSC performance exhaust system. This does nothing for the 3.7 sec 0-60 mph sprint time, but it’ll surely get you noticed.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics stars in Mission: Impossible 4 – Ghost Protocol

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 05:00 AM PDT

The Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol will air on December 16, 2011, but while many people think Tom Cruise will be the star of the show, we would beg to differ. If we do find ourselves checking out the fourth movie in the Mission Impossible franchise, we’ll be doing so just to get a glimpse of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car that will inspire the production BMW i8 version.

"We are thrilled to be involved again in another Hollywood Blockbuster," said Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing. "The BMW Group leads the way in developing future mobility with a focus on sustainability. One great example is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car which will be presented in the film. With its futuristic design and large glass surfaces, the car offers a fascinating perspective on the future of sheer driving pleasure – in combination with maximum efficiency. Also with BMW ConnectedDrive technology, it is the perfect car for Ethan Hunt to outsmart his pursuers through narrow streets and busy city traffic."

Hit the jump to watch the Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol trailer, but more importantly, pay close attention to the one minute mark to catch a glimpse of the BMW i8.

Porsche 911 / 991

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT

The 911 is the most successful model in Porsche’s history. It started its long history back in 1963 and since then Porsche has offered five distinct generations: 911 classic, 964 Series, 993 Series, 996 Series, and 997 Series. Moreover, the sixth one is already under intense testings and will make its official debut in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

It may be a little unorthodox for Porsche to be bringing out a new generation 911 despite the fact they just revealed a facelift version, but the requests keep changing and Porsche must answer the call of duty. Their latest target is improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The sixth generation 911, or the 998, will be a completely new vehicle, even though everyone will recognize it as a 911 model. Shortly after the launch of the 998 911, Porsche will also be releasing the Turbo, GT2, and GT3 in 2012.

UPDATE 06/01/2011: According to new details offered by Car And Driver, the next generation Porsche 911 will drop the current 6-speed manual gearbox and replace it with a seven-speed manual that will help to improve fuel-economy and reduce engine noise. The new gearbox will be derived from Porsche's seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic and will deliver the same shifting experience as the current tranny.

More details on the 2012 Porsche 998 911 after the jump.

Next generation Viper may once again race in Le Mans

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

There are times in our lives when all we need is a quick timeout in order to get our stuff together and have the ability to move forward. The Dodge Viper is doing just that and when it makes its grand return, it may extend further than the general market. Chrysler is currently weighing its options to decide if the next generation Dodge Viper should return to the LeMans series.

The original Viper GTS-R was unveiled by Chrysler at the 1995 Pebble Beach Concours and managed to secure the number one position in many events, including the 1998, 1999, and 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans series, as well as many championships in the FIA GT Championship and a couple in the American LeMans series. With such a high rate of success, it seems crazy for Chrysler to not partake in these same events with its bigger and better Viper and we don’t think we’ll have to question their sanity for long. The company has already begun the process for building a race-spec version of the next generation Viper for the LeMans series. The new model will be prepared by Riley Technologies, which has produced the title-winning Grand-Am chassis for the past eight years. Once complete, the racing Viper will have to take on models like the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, the BMW M3 GT2, and the Ferrari 458 GTC.

Chrysler’s motorsport manager Gary Johnson said: "We are investigating some things and seeing what is out there, although no decision has been made yet. We have to be very careful about what we do."

American Chopper Cadillac Bike "Paul Senior" Edition

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 03:15 PM PDT

The Teutel family, particularly Paul and Paul Jr., are most known for being the famous father and son team of Orange County Choppers. At least until their huge egos clashed.

A few years ago, Senior and Junior had a pretty serious falling out that resulted in the former firing the latter from Orange County Choppers. In turn, Junior set up his own company, the aptly named ’Paul Junior Designs’, to go head-to-head with his father.

The acrimony between the two was the perfect opportunity for Cadillac to put one against the other in a custom bike building contest for charity. With the opportunity to build a bike based on the Cadillac CTS-V, Senior and the rest of the boys at OCC decided to go old-school with their approach, clearly emphasizing power over style with a powerful V-twin engine that was given some extra doses of power courtesy of a shot of nitrous.

Design-wise, Senior’s take a lot tamer than that of Junior’s, which might probably be the reason why fans of the show have given an overwhelming stamp of approval to Junior’s work - 96% to 4% really isn’t much of a contest, to be honest - compared to that of Senior’s.

Despite the contentious relationship between the two, both Senior and Junior participated in the competition because the two bikes will eventually be auctioned off to benefit the Cure Duchenne charity.

Bids are now being taken for both bikes and, as expected, Paul Junior’s bike has been racking up bids compared to the dryness of bidders for Paul the Elder’s bike.

Check out Senior’s work in the photo gallery below.

American Chopper Cadillac Bike "Paul Junior" Edition

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 02:15 PM PDT

Paul Teutel and Paul Teutel Jr. are household names in the world of bikers both local and foreign. As the men behind the popular American Chopper TV series, the two Pauls have become famous for their custom-tuned bikes, racking up a list of high-profile clients that include musicians, actors, and professional athletes.

And while Paul the Younger is no longer part of the Orange County Choppers team, father and son will forever be linked together, which leads us to this pretty unique build-off involving the two protagonists - or antagonists, depending on which side of the fence you’re on.

In collaboration with Cadillac, Paul the Older and Paul the Younger each were given free reign to design and build their own Cadillac CTS-V-inspired custom bike.

In the case of Paul Junior, his interpretation translated to a lowered piece of monstrosity with a metallic black finish and the prevalent use of chrome accents to go with the unique, albeit imposing modern-day look. According to Junior, he wanted to design the rear end of the book to bear striking similarities to the rear of the car, even using the taillights from the CTS-V by incorporating them into his work’s fender.

The two bikes will eventually be auctioned off to benefit the Cure Duchenne charity. Seeing as the egos in the Teutel family never seem to run dry, a Discovery Channel ran a poll to see which bike the public liked more. To no one’s surprise, Junior blew Pops out of the water, holding a staggering 96% - 4% edge in fan approval.

Either way, both bikes can be had for the highest bidder. Just head over to the link and post your price. Best be warned, though, the bids for Junior’s bike are going straight through the roof.

Nissan GT-R Agent Orange

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

AMS Performance’s version of Godzilla is back and still dressed up in the Agent Orange garbs found on their previous model - the Nissan GTR Alpha 9. The Alpha 9 was packing over 900 HP and could complete the quarter mile in the mid-9 second range, but a change of ownership and a new Alpha 10 package later and the GTR can now boast of 1,000HP!

The new Alpha 10 conversion kit features an AMS Alpha 10 Turbo System, a balanced and blueprinted VR38 AMS Race Engine, and an AMS Alpha 10 transmission by Sheptrans, among other things. These additions take the sports car to 1,000 HP and 679 lb-ft of torque running on 93 octane fuel. AMS Performance has already tested this monster and has earned an official quarter mile time of 9.1 seconds at 163 mph.

The Nissan GTR Agent Orange’s fiery growl can now be heard from miles away with a new AMS 90mm downpipes (catalytic converters available), an AMS 90mm resonated mid-pipe (race version available), and an AMS 90mm race exhaust upgrade.

There’s enough additions to the Nissan GTR Agent Orange to make any car enthusiast drool. Check out the full list after the jump, as well as a walk-around video taken by an admirer.

Batman's new ride will be a Lamborghini Aventador

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 10:00 AM PDT

In the past few years, supercars have been all the rage in blockbuster movies, having appeared in a growing number of them that involve superheroes. Iron Man began that trend when Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., was seen riding the Audi R8 a few years back. Since then, a lot of high-budget summer movies have taken to exotics to serve as the protagonist’s main ride, including the Audi R8 Spyder in Iron Man 2, the Ferrari 458 Italia in the about-to-be-released Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 in The Dark Knight.

We bring this up because, apparently, the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, will feature none other than the Lamborghini Aventador as Bruce Wayne’s new set of wheels.

A couple of photos were even snapped by a forum member of Luxury4play showing the Lamborghini supercar in full movie dress up, including plates that say "Gotham" to go with a slightly different, yet subtle, silver finish.

It’s unlikely that this Aventador is going to be the new Batmobile for the movie because it doesn’t have all the trinkets and gizmos that are mandatory for Batman’s crime-fighting ride. Chalk the Aventador up as the latest in Bruce Wayne’s growing auto garage. Let’s just hope that it doesn’t suffer the same fate as that of the Murcielago LP640 - it crashed heavily in one scene - in the Dark Knight.
