Porsche 996 gets an LS1 V8 engine transplant

Posted: 02 Jul 2011 05:00 AM PDT

A beat-up, burnt Porsche 996 is a sight for sore eyes. To put it plainly, the finest in German engineering doesn’t deserve to be treated like this by an engine fire that rendered it virtually catatonic.

Fortunately, LS1tech forum member "1dirtyZ" has come to save this particular 996 from the jaws of a junk shop incinerator. Taking the completely destroyed 996, 1dirtyZ bought the Porsche sports car to give it a complete make-over, one that specifically involved changing the powertrain and putting in a General Motors LS1 V8 engine to replace the 996’s old 3.6-liter H6 engine that produced 316 horsepower. With the LS1 V8 engine, the Porsche 996 is looking at a new output of around 345 horsepower and 350 lb/ft of torque.

The project is far from a finished product - as you can see, there’s still plenty of work left to be done - but from the looks of things, it should be done sooner than later. In the meantime, there are a couple of videos you can watch of the GM-powered Porsche 996 - how often do you hear that? - hitting the road for some test runs after the jump.

Video: 7-year old steals car, drives it for 20 miles

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 11:00 PM PDT

Seven-year olds are supposed to be playing with their toy cars, not capable of doing something like this. In a piece of news so bizarre it should give everyone their morning jolt, a seven-year old boy was caught by police after he apparently stole his mom’s car and, even more amazing, managed to drive it 20 miles at speeds reaching 70 mph.

The whole scene played out in Huron County, Michigan where authorities were notified about a driver navigating around town in a Pontiac Sunfire. Normally, this wouldn’t be cause for alarm, but considering that the driver was a seven-year old kid in his pajamas, it raised more than its fair share of shock from motorists within the area.

Fortunately, the police were able to corral the boy in his attempt to see his stepdad in Filion, Michigan and did so without having to resort to anything more than just boxing him in before the kid finally pulled over on the side of a rural road.

This should be a pretty interesting case for prosecutors who are now in the process of discerning whether charges are going to be filed on the boy or his parents.

One thing we do know is that the boy’s parents should be a little more careful in what they teach their kids at a young age. Playing with toy cars is fine, but playing with the real thing is not.

HSV SV Black Edition

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) has unveiled the special edition "SV Black Edition" based on either ClubSport R8, ClubSport Tourer R8, or Maloo R8 models at the Melbourne Auto Show. This special edition will be offered in both manual and automatic transmissions and will go on sale in September.

The "SV Black Edition" will be offered with matte black detailing, a Vector hood scoop and fender gills, HSV’s bi-modal exhaust system, and 20-inch forged alloy wheels. For the interior, the Black Edition models will add a unique dash treatment, leather seats, and a leather-bound steering wheel, on top of the already generous E3 equipment list. A special Enhanced Driver Interface (EDI) system that will offer details on power, torque, manifold pressure, fuel, elevation, voltage, oil and air temperature will also be available.

The standard equipment list includes a reversing camera, park assist, and satellite navigation. There will only be 225 units built and, despite the "Black Edition" name, this special edition will be offered in Sting Red, Heron White, Alto Grey, Nitrate Silver, and Phantom (black).

Ferrari 599 Replacement

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 11:00 AM PDT

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a replacement for the Ferrari 599 Fiorano, but this is the first time we can offer more details about the new sports car. For starters, expect it to make its official at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March with sales beginning later in the year.

The 599 replacement will be built on an all-new chassis and will borrow design elements from both the 2012 Ferrari FF and the Ferrari California. The model will get modified bumpers and new headlamps, a modified bonnet, and a new exhaust system with tips that sit higher than on the current 599.

Fans of true sportscars can also breathe easier knowing that the replacement 599 will not be a hybrid model. It will instead be powered by a direct injected 6.3-liter V-12 - the same as in the the FF - with a total output of 700 HP. The engine will be combined with a rear-wheel drive system and the Ferrari’s latest seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.

Car Infographics: The Real Consequences of Drinking and Driving

Posted: 01 Jul 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Getting ready for a big party this weekend? There may be some things you need to know before tossing back a few drinks.

Almost 30 people in the U.S. die every day in a car accident that involves a drunk driver. That works out to about one death every 48 minutes. Theoretically, think about how many people have died since your work day began. Even worse, about half of the 181 child passengers who died in a car accident in 2009 perished because of a drunk driver.

Don’t want to think about death? If a drunk driver is caught doing the deed, the consequences aren’t exactly appealing either. We’re talking DUI programs, suspension or loss of license, tons of monetary debt, and even jail time. With every drunk driving incident you accrue, the consequences get even steeper.

Basically, don’t be an irresponsible dimwit. Before you slather on your cologne/perfume and put on your party clothes, take a second to plan your return ride home just in case the liquor’s flowing at the latest hot spot. Get a designated driver, grab some cash for a taxi, or arrange to spend the night if it’s a house party because becoming a statistic just seems like the ultimate buzz kill.

Check back with us soon for the next installment of our Car Infographics series!
