| BMW M3 by Active Autowerke and MAC Posted: 04 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT Who said that American tuners do not know how to update a German sports coupe? Active Autowerke, a Miami-based tuning shop, and Mac Auto Couture have unveiled two impressive update packages for the new BMW M3 Coupe. Their updates include significant exterior and interior improvements, but also many changes made under the hood. And although the two tuners said nothing about the new output, it is rumored that the 420 HP was left far behind. Their package include a new front bumper, carbon Kevlar front splitters, a vented race hood, carbon Kevlar vents, new rear diffuser, carbon boot lid, REcaro seats, KW Clubsport Coilovers, performance steering wheel flat bottom. One of the most impressive packages is the one painted in Ithaca Green. It features all steel widebody conversion to quarter panels, complete color change to Lamborghini Ithaca Verde pearl green, dry carbon fiber roof, dry carbon fiber Vorsteiner front spoiler and rear diffuser, Vorsteiner Aero bootlid, moldings and mirror bases painted matte black and a new set of 20" wheels. For the engine upgrades the tuners also placed a new supercharger kit and a new exhaust system with custom tips. | Fiat 500 Marcia Corta by Camal Posted: 04 Jul 2011 08:00 AM PDT If you are a fan of the Pininfarina Design House then Alessio Minchella and Alessandro Camorali are names very familiar to you. Among the cars they have designed the most famous ones are Ferrari 599XX, 599GTO and 458 Italia. In 2008 they have founded "Camal" and the first car to be designed by their little company is 500 Marcia Corta ("Short Gear" in Italian). A quick look to their car will unveil a design language inspired by classic Abarth models and retro rally cars. The exterior package includes new new front and rear bumpers, sideskirts, spoiler, and competition-style quad spotlight pod. As their concept is based on the 500 EsseEsse, under the hood you will find the same 1.4 liter turbocharged engine that delivers 160 HP. But it will be combined with a new exhaust system. The 500 Marcia Corta is just a concept at the moment, but Camal is currently looking for partners to help with production and distribution. | 800 HP Toyota Celica fastest car at Goodwood Posted: 04 Jul 2011 07:00 AM PDT During this week-end the automotive world turned its attention to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and now is time to see which cars were the best in the show. One of them - the fastest car overall at Goodwood was a 800 HP Toyota Celica - who needed only 48.07 seconds to blast up the 1.6 mile driveway of Goodwood House. This result placed it in front of many famous racing cars, including recent Formula 1 cars. The car was built and driven by the former British Rally Champion, Jonny Milner. The car is based on the sixth generation Celica and weights only 2314 lbs. In order to obtain a better weight distribution, the driver's position has moved back 12 inches, and the car's center of gravity has been lowered by raising the wheel arches and upper suspension mounts. Under the hood there is an engine borrowed from a World Rally Championship winning Corolla fitted with a Rotrex supercharger that ensured an output of 800 HP. The car was also equipped with a nitrous oxide injection system and super soft rallycross specification Michelin slick tires. 800 HP Toyota Celica fastest car at Goodwood originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 4 July 2011 14:00 EST. |
| Posted: 04 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT With a history that began in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 is one of the best sold convertibles on the market. In its 21 years of history, the MX-5 saw three different generations, numerous design updates, and even more engine changes. However, the most impressive update has been announced for the fourth generation that is set to be launched in 2012. The Mazda MX-5 will remain a rear-wheel drive compact sports coupe with exterior design inspired by the Shinari Concept unveiled earlier this year. With the new generation, Mazda will focus on reducing the total weight to less than 1,000 kilos. At the launch of the Shinari concept, Ikuo Maeda, general manager of Mazda Motor Corp.'s design division said: "this design will lead to the next generation of Mazda design and will lead to other elements." Guess the MX-5 will be among the first to adopt Mazda’s new "Kodo - Soul of Motion" design language. Updated 06/09/2011: Inside Line has released today new details on the next generation Mazda MX-5 roadster. It seems that one of their insiders confirmed them the next model will loose no less than 720 pounds from the 2,480-pound curb weight of today’s Miata. In order to obtain this impressive weight reduction the company will use high-strength steels for the body, a smaller, lighter engine and a more minimalist specification. The model will be offered by a 1.4 liter turbocharged engine equipped with direct injection and variable cam phasing as part of Mazda’s SkyActiv engineering efficiency program. Updated 07/04/2011: The British company Autocar has revealed new details about the next generation MX-5’s turbocharged four cylinder engine. According to the magazine the new engine, a 1.5 liter one, and not 1.4, will feature variable cam phasing, lighter, low-friction reciprocating parts, and possibly a new exhaust manifold design, all of them as part of Mazda's SkyActiv engineering campaign. The body will be made in steel, but it will feature high-strength panels, and some ingenious structural solutions, such as a twin-backbone frame, to solve the problem of open-top rigidity. | Posted: 12 May 2011 07:00 AM PDT The wait is over ladies and gentlemen: Lamborghini’s next hypercar has made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, and dare we say what a hypercar it is! The new Bull God will feature an earth shattering 700hp V12 and the highest power to weight ratio of any car in its class. Yes, this is the new, long waited Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Lamborghini is really good at creating sinister super sports cars, but it is equally as talented at naming them. According to the company, "Aventador" was the name of a bull that entered into battle on October 1993 at the Saragossa Arena, earning the "Trofeo de la Peña La Madroñera" for its outstanding courage. Having the courage to go up against a new world of super sports cars will be the name of the game for the new Lamborghini flagship. Today's world is extremely high-tech and many new players have entered the arena. Lamborghini has been promoting its carbon-fiber monocoque technology and the Aventador's 2.9 second 0-62mph, but will that be enough? According to Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. "The Aventador is a jump of two generations in terms of design and technology, it's the result of an entirely new project, but at the same time it's a direct and consistent continuation of Lamborghini's brand values. It is extreme in its design and its performance, uncompromising in its standards and technology, and unmistakably Italian in its style and perfection. Overall, the dynamics and technical excellence of the Aventador LP 700-4 makes it unrivaled in the worldwide super sports car arena." UPDATE 03/04/2011: Lamborghini has placed an online configurator up for our greedy little consumption. We’d talk more about it, but we’re on our way over to build ourselves an Aventador! UPDATE 04/29/2011:Shortly after the Aventador’s official debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Lamborghini was pleased to announce that the super car had been sold out for the 2011 model year. Now, the company can puff out its chest that much more since the Aventador is now sold out for the next 18 months! UPDATE 05/12/2011: Ever wonder what it would be like to watch a car be built inside a museum? We didn’t think so, but the folks over at Lamborghini decided to bring the Aventador to the Chiostro del Bramante for the viewing of the "La Forza del Toro". Knowing that bringing the supercar inside the museum would be difficult, the engineers of the Aventador decided to bring the materials inside and build the car right then and there...without the benefits of any machinery at the production facility. Impressive indeed. Check out the video after the jump. Hit the jump to read more on the new Aventador. | Mazda MX-5 Miata Karai Special Edition Posted: 04 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT There’s not much arguing the fact that the MX-5 Miata is one of Mazda’s most popular models of all time. So if there was any other car in the Japanese automaker’s lineup that has earned the right to spawn special edition models left and right, it’s their iconic sports roadster. With that thought in mind, Mazda has once again given fans of the MX-5 Miata another special edition model for their consumption. This one, called the Karai, comes from the automaker’s European division and has been given plenty of new digs that will most definitely give it plenty of attention from die-hard Miata fans in Europe. You can make a case that the all these special edition Miatas have become one too many, even for its popularity. But that’s the thing with this venerable roadster; somehow, people just can’t get enough of it, no matter what their tastes and preferences are. The Karai, which means ’sharp’ in Japanese, certainly fits the name it was given. | Posted: 04 Jul 2011 02:30 AM PDT German automaker BMW is one of the most diverse brands in the industry, having branched itself out past its cars division into other ventures, particularly motorcycles. At the company’s recent Motorrad Innovation Day 2011, the German brand unveiled their latest two-wheeled concept machine, the electric drive E-Scooter. Featuring a design that lends itself to the lack of a main frame, the E-Scooter comes with an aluminum battery casing that is connected to the steering head support, the rear frame, and the left-hand mounted single swing arm, which is directly hinged to a horizontally installed shock absorber. The charging device of the E-Scooter comes with a charge cable that allows the bike’s battery to be recharged in a painless manner - any household power socket will suffice. The electric drivetrain of the E-Scooter allows it to reduce its range by somewhere around 10 - 20 percent depending on the bike’s profile. The E-Scooter’s performance numbers have yet to be announced, but BMW is pegging the bike to produce an output that ’s right around the range of maxi scooters that are currently powered by a 600-cc combustion engine with a driving range of well over 60 miles. For a scooter that boasts of an electric drivetrain, that’s a mighty impressive number given that it compares favorably to its fuel counterparts. | Posted: 04 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT The German tuner Edo Competition is usually focusing on models from Ferrari or Lamborghini, but this time they came with the M5 Dark Edition - a 555 HP BMW M5 wagon that wants to prove that even family cars can be fun. The most important part of he tuning package is of course the engine update. The tuner is offering a recalibrated ECU, high-flow air filters and catalytic converters as well as a newly developed high-performance exhaust system that will increase the engine’s output from 500 to 555 HP and the peak torque from 384 lbs-ft to 413 lbs-ft. Also, after removing the speed limiter the car can hit a top speed of 190 mph. The 0 to 60 mph sprint is also made 0.5 seconds faster (4.2 seconds). The package also includes a modified front and the new rear skirt, a new rear wing and a new set of 20" light alloy wheels with painted centers and Dunlop tires. The interior combined carbon fiber with precious leather, making the M5 a very elegant and enjoyable car. Edo M5 Dark Edition originally appeared on topspeed.com on Monday, 4 July 2011 09:00 EST. |
| Bluebird Team wants a crack at the land speed record for an electric car Posted: 03 Jul 2011 11:00 AM PDT We’ve been harping about world records on this site for a little while now. It’s not because we’ve suddenly developed a fascination for them, but because we’ve always been on the look-out for records like this. One record that seems to continually pop up recently is the land speed record for an electric car. And just as it always comes up in conversations, somebody is trying to take a shot at beating it. The latest attempt we’ve heard about comes from the Bluebird Team, a team of engineers and drivers building a car - the Bluebird Electric - with the hopes of breaking the top speed record for an electric car. Headed by land-speed racing veteran Don Wales, the Bluebird Team is looking at breaking 500 mph in the Bluebird Electric, a notable feat considering that the current record only sits at 307 mph, which, incidentally, was set just a year ago. Despite the lofty goals being set by the team, the work done to jump start the entire project is still in its infancy stages. The dream is there; the money, unfortunately, isn’t. "I have a team of 30 people requiring accommodation and feeding and volunteers are needed to help as course marshals and fodders, " Wales said in a statement. "Without a principal sponsor as yet, the development of the car is taking all of what limited budget we have". Lack of money notwithstanding, the Bluebird Team is still pushing forward with their goal. As part of their testing, the team took the car to the Pendine Sands in Wales on July 2 and 3 for some testing. If anybody’s interested in giving these guys a hand through donations, you can do so by contacting Rebecca Nicholls on her email at rebecca@bluebirdspeedrecords.com. Learn more about the Bluebird Team and their BlueBird Electric Car after the jump.
