Ferrari California 'Dreamin' by Wheelsandmore

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 08:00 AM PDT

We don’t know if this was what the Mamas and the Papas were talking about when they released their hit, California Dreaming, but this latest tuning package from Wheelsandmore would definitely warm us up on a Winter’s day. Apparently, the German tuner thought they could do better than Ferrari by tweaking this California’s engine, along with its exterior look, to come up with their California ’Dreamin’ package.

The ’Dreamin’ package starts off with a new removable, valve controlled exhaust system and an update to the ecu software of the 4,300 cc V8 Direct Injection engine. These changes boost power to 500 hp and 525 lb-ft of torque, up from the standard 460 hp and 357 lb/ft of torque. Other technical additions include an optional combination of 200 cell sports catalysts and premuffler replacement tubes, handcrafted by Wheelsandmore.

The California ’Dreamin’ package continues on the exterior with aerodynamic and design packages. These packages include lacquered selected serial parts and a double-line black race stripe, black plasma coated end tips, and discreet carbon elements at the front- and rear bumper. Other additions include side skirts and a carbon boot lid spoiler. The final touch was provided by a new set of 3-piece forged wheels (size 9.0x21" at the front and 12.5x21") wrapped around S1Evo barrels from Hankook (245/30/21" tires at the front and 345/25/21" tires at the rear). The Ferrari California was also dropped by about 40mm with special lowering springs.

Predator Xtreme is a supercar mash-up of disastrous proportions

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 07:00 AM PDT

You know how people immediately assume that combining elements from jaw-dropping vehicles and mashing them all up spontaneously nets them a wondrous piece of automotive engineering? Sure, it works sometimes. But for the most part, we're left scratching our heads while looking at this ungodly sight, bemoaning the sheer lack of creative foresight by the people who built it.

This is the Predator Xtreme, a car that could have been built when somebody put a Ferrari Enzo, a Lamborghini Reventon, a McLaren F1, and an Infinity G35 into a giant blender, put it on full blast, and watched as this piece of work come out.

Now, it probably isn't as bad as it looks, especially at first glance. But once you take a minute and start examining the car, you'll notice that a lot of what makes the car look the way it does is the elements found in the aforementioned supercars. The front end looks like a dysfunctional marriage between an Enzo and a Reventon, the interior seating lay-out looks to have been ripped out of a McLaren F1 – except that this one looks far more cramped - and don't even get us started on why those taillights look suspiciously like the ones found on the G35. It's because they are!

Ultimate Lotus Evora sporting 400 HP on the way

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 05:00 AM PDT

1.

The gang over at Lotus has been putting in its hours lately with tons of new projects and ideas scheduled for production. We thought they would be done what with their five revamped models and the production of their new engines, but now we find out there may be more. It seems Lotus is also planning a new top version of the Evora model inspired by the GT racer car.

While there aren’t many details on the upcoming model just yet, we do know it will be placed above the Evora S model. The first rumors suggest it will be powered by an upgraded version of the 3.5-liter supercharged V6 engine that will deliver around 400bhp.

Before the Ultimate Evora arrives, however, we’ll get to see the revamped Lotus Evora and its "147 improvements" including higher-grade cabin materials, a sportier exhaust note, and sharper gearbox. Lotus boss, Dany Bahar, says that Lotus’ priority is to "improve the quality, to give the car a soul." This refreshed model is scheduled to be unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and will then be followed by a convertible version in about a year and a possible plug-in hybrid concept in two years.

Audi TT-RS American model

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 04:00 AM PDT

Audi finally came to their senses back in September 2010 when they decided that it was time for the TT-RS to make its way back to the States, but their most recent announcement may leave some with less than what they bargained for. Along with the TT-RS’ first appearance on American soil at the Chicago Auto Show, came Audi’s announcement that we will only be getting a limited run of 1,000 units of the vehicle. Audi is obviously playing the supply and demand game since 11,500 fans expressed their enthusiasm over the TT-RS in only one month. No official details were given on the car, but Audi did confirm that it would be $10,000 more expensive than the current TTS, priced at $51,000. Sales for the Audi TT-RS will begin at the end of Summer 2011.

The Audi TT-RS will be powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine that will deliver an extra 20 HP compared to the European model. With a total of 360 HP, the engine will only be offered with a conventional six-speed manual transmission and will sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. We expect to see a greater top speed compared to the European model.

UPDATE 07/08/2011: Audi has announced prices for the 2012 TT-RS, a model that signifies the return of the RS nameplate to the U.S. The Audi TT RS will be priced at $56,850 (excluding destination charges, taxes, title, options and dealer charges). By comparison, the Audi TT-S version is priced from $50K.

Miami GT by DDR Motorsport

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Miami, Florida is more than just sun, sand, and South Beach. It's known for those things of course - not to mention all the hot people that live there - but there's one more thing for which Miami is starting to get known: a burgeoning auto scene.

Plenty of the world's most exotic and expensive supercars run through the roads of Miami and where variety seems to be no problem, a certain auto company is looking to make heads turn with their own custom-build supercar, the Miami GT.

The brainchild of DDR Motorsports, the Miami GT, is the epitome of what Ferdinand Porsche once said, "I couldn't find the sports car of my dreams, so I built it myself." It's a one-of-a-kind supercar that takes customer satisfaction to heart. While the basic elements of the car have already been built, there are plenty other elements of it that can be customized and styled depending on the customer's whims and preferences.

Call them a niche supercar builder all you want, but you can't deny the potential of what they're cooking up in South Beach.

Details on the Miami GT by DDR Motorsport after the jump.

Lamborghini Gallardo "Galaxy Warrior"

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT

You can spin its name however you want, but the name "Galaxy Warrior" doesn’t necessarily sound like something you’d want to put in your car. Sure, it could pass as the name of the Ultimate Warrior’s long-lost cousin.

But as a styling package for the Lamborghini Gallardo? Nope. Not good at all.

True to its name, this "Galaxy Warrior" Gallardo that’s being sold on Ebay Germany does look the part of an intergalactic machine from the world of Warrior. But here on this planet, where the Gallardo is considered one of the most beautifully-designed cars in the world, there’s no room for robotic-looking Italian supercars, even if its an attention-grabber in every lost sense of the word.

In any case, the people responsible for this ungodly sight is a company called ATS Automotive, which gave the Gallardo an aerodynamic kit that includes a new front bumper, new side skirts, a number of new air vents, a new rear bumper, an aftermarket rear wing, and new twin-pipe exhaust system, and a new set of alloy wheels.

While it does sound like a package that’s got everything you need in an aero kit, the visual result of the whole car leaves a lot to be desired.

About the only thing redeemable about this car is that it still comes with the Gallardo’s 5.2-liter V10 engine that produces an output of 560 horsepower. Other than that, and that alone, we’d leave this one alone.

Honda Insight Hybrid Rally Car by Oaktec

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 02:01 AM PDT

Since time immemorial, we always thought that the whole point of auto racing was to determine which of the competing cars is the fastest among the lot. That simple premise has been set in stone since the olden days so we figure that it wouldn’t change anytime soon. But banning a car from competition because its "too fast" against its competitors? That doesn’t sit too well with us.

The car we’re talking about is the Oaktec Honda Insight Hybrid Rally Car, a gas-electric eco sports car that competes - or was supposed to compete - in the Formula 1000 rally championship. The only problem was that its rivals lodged a complaint for its withdrawal because the car was too fast for them.

Turns out, the problem stems from its tuned gas-electric hybrid system, which easily achieves 100 mph when driven at cruise control and its unique Bosch-sourced CVT automatic transmission. Furthermore, the system allows the car to compete while running at 82 mph, a staggering number considering that the second best car returns only 65 mph.

Modern Day Steam Machine to Break Land Speed Record

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 01:00 PM PDT

We love going fast and we love pushing the limits to see what our vehicles are capable of. The Bonneville Salt Flats provide a perfect setting for speed junkies of all kind to come and find out what they are capable of achieving. This dry lake bed has been dominated in recent times by the internal combustion engine and even jet power, but an older form of powering four wheels is about to take center stage once again.

The U.S. Land Steam Record Team will be attempting to beat the current record in their newest steam powered vehicle. In 2009, Team Inspiration from Great Britain broke the 1985 steam record by hitting 148.308 mph. The previous official FIA record of 127mph was set in 1906 by American, Fred Marriott, driving a Stanley steamer at Daytona Beach.

Driver and car designer, Chuk Williams, in conjunction with Cyclone Power Technologies will be the latest steam pioneers when they attempt the record breaking run in August 2011. The state of the art streamline design is projected to hit a top speed north of 200 mph, which would undoubtedly seal its position in the history books. We look forward to reporting more on the attempt once the team makes it to Bonneville.

Is the 2012 Porsche 911 Prototype Taking a Fiery Page out of the Ferrari 458 Italia's Manual?

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Please tell us it isn’t so. During a routine test drive over in Steinegg, Germany, a 2012 Porsche 911/991 prototype has inexplicably gone up in flames. According to fire chief commander, Klaus Buchinger, the fire started in the engine bay and "the car has burned like tinder." Apparently, the car completely burned through in only 15 minutes. The cause for the fire is still unknown.

The vehicle testing was a special prototype developed for the Chinese market, but will be finding its way back to the Porsche center in Weissach for further examination. Once the malfunctioning element has been discovered and corrected, we’re sure the 2012 Porsche 911 will successfully find its way to its official debut later this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. That, or it will continue to go down in flames like the first few Ferrari 458 Italia units. We’re hoping for the former and not the latter.

As a reminder, the 2012 Porsche 911/991 will be powered by a 3.4-liter, direct-injected flat-six engine that delivers a total of 350 HP at 6400 rpm and max torque of 280 lb-ft between 4400 and 6000 rpm. The Carrera S, on the other hand, will get a 3.8-liter flat-six with direct injection engine that delivers a total of 400 HP at 7000 rpm.
