Ride and Drive Event: Ford and Chevy Vie For Your Business

Posted: 09 Jul 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Ford and Chevrolet have been competing since the beginning and with today's challenging economic times, the rivalry has grown even more fierce. It was not so long ago that car dealerships were selling hundreds of vehicles a day and running out of inventory. Ford and Chevrolet could produce any vehicle of any quality level and have it be a top seller. As the consumer has grown more conscious and more knowledgeable, the business of selling automobiles has grown more difficult.

It is hard to negate the fact that the American auto manufacturers have made leaps and bounds in terms of quality and sustainability for the vehicles they produce. These companies have begun to emerge from the financial crisis and are plotting their return to dominance. New marketing tactics have helped lead the charge and get the consumer thinking about their products. One of the best ways to do this is by having the consumer be able to test the vehicles in a non-sales environment.

At the Barrett Jackson auction in Orange County, both Ford and Chevrolet had ride and drive events set up to stimulate the car enthusiasts at the auction. Without paying any money or being hassled by a greasy car salesman, I was able to test drive the full range of new General Motors products as well as several different Ford rides. After completing some test drives, I was then whipped around the track by a professional driver in a Corvette ZR1 which left little doubt in my mind that these companies know how to show off their stuff.

Hit the jump for more details on the Ride and Drive experience.

Video: Cunning driver does his best catch-me-if-you-can impersonation with the police

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 11:00 PM PDT

We’re all advocates of law-enforcement officials that go to great lengths to help and protect their citizens from rowdy rascals like this kid on a Citroen Saxo. Having said that, though, we couldn’t help but chuckle a little bit after watching this video of the kid elusively evading the police in a merry-go-round car chase in Coleshill, England.

The car chase stemmed from a police crackdown in the area, forbidding what’s called illegal car cruise events. Clearly, the patrol cars wanted to make an example of the wily driver, except that they couldn’t catch him. In their attempts to do so, the driver went around all available lanes, speeding up, slowing down, running in reverse, and crossing the middle divider as the pursuers tried in vain to catch him.

In the end, the driver of the Citroen sped away only for the police to find the car abandoned about 12 miles away with the driver still at large. We sincerely hope that the police catch this hooligan soon before he attempts to endanger any more lives.

But, still, you gotta give props to this kid for his elusiveness and driving skills. We haven’t seen the police made fun of like that since the days of the Three Stooges.

Video: Aprilia and the RSV4 pay tribute to the space shuttle

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 02:00 PM PDT

The Aprilia RSV4 has raced and been compared to a number of different things over the years so it’s a little refreshing that for a change, Aprilia USA is taking its competitive juices aside to pay tribute to the the of man’s greatest technological achievement: the space shuttle.

When the first shuttle mission launched back in 1981, it opened the gates for a golden age in technological advancements that coursed through various industries, including the automotive and motorcycle segments. The space shuttle program made so many things possible in this world and opened our eyes to a world full of never-before-though-of possibilities.

Now that the space shuttle is nearing its end, the folks over at Aprilia USA have released a pretty cool video paying tribute to the space shuttle program and all the men and women responsible for designing, building, and operating the very machine that made space travel possible.

As part of the video, Aprilia uses facts from both the space shuttle and their very own RSV4 superbike to note how the former set the precedent - in more ways than one - for the latter, and so many other machines, to become the technological marvels that they are in their own right.

It’s not so much a comparison video this time around for the RSV4, but more of Aprilia tipping their helmets off to one of mankind’s finest achievements as it makes its final voyage into the cosmos.

Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet '800 E' V12 by Brabus

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 11:00 AM PDT

How would you like to own a Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet that can smoke even the most powerful of exotics in the world? It sounds like we’re reaching considering that the car doesn’t really belong in the same exotic landscape as those devil-may-care machines. But once you see what German tuning company, Brabus, has cooked up, you’re going to have to pick your jaws up off the floor. Don’t feel too bad, though, because we just picked ours up too.

This is the Brabus 800 E V12 Cabriolet and it really does defy all kinds of reasonable explanation. It’s based on the E-Class Cabriolet and it’s got enough power to shame even some of the most powerful supercars on the planet. Of course, all that is owed to the 800-horsepower engine under its hood, which really is beyond comprehension when you think about it. It’s an E-Class, people! Make no mistake; the E-Class has some serious juice in it, but 800 horsepower?

We’re starting to be at a loss for words so it’s probably best to find out more about it after the jump.

BMW M3

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 11:00 AM PDT

August 1985. This was the day BMW announced the most powerful 3-Series they have ever built. And in its 25 years of history, the M3 has seen four different generations and evolved from a 2.3 liter inline-four cylinder engine with 200 HP to an impressive V8 hitting 420 HP. It may not be the best sports car out there, but it is surely one that combines most of the virtues required from a sports car: an extraordinary look, great performance, the best class handling, and a luxurious interior.

In 2013, the sports car’s history will move on to its next chapter as BMW will be set to reveal the new generation M3. This time, the model will only be offered as a coupe and cabrio - the sedan version will be dropped - and will feature a twin-turbo 3.0 liter straight-six engine for the first time. This engine will be bumping up the M3’s horsepower to 450.

UPDATE 07/08/2011: The British magazine AutoExpress has revealed new details about the upcoming generation BMW M3 set to be released in 2014. It seems that the new BMW M3 will be powered by a fresh 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine equipped with three turbos – one powered by electricity, rather than the exhaust gases. Output will be around 450 HP (up from the current output of 420 HP). The body will feature a mix of steel and ultra-light carbon fiber-reinforced plastic.

Hit the jump to read more about the future BMW M3.

Dodge Viper ACR wants to break records during its Viper Record Tour '11

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Chrysler may be about ready to unveil the new generation Dodge Viper, but the company isn’t finished with the current generation just yet. Apparently, Chrysler wants to make history by breaking as many records as they possibly can with the Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR revealed just a few months ago.

A few months ago, the Viper SRT-10 ACR became the fastest production car at Miller Motorsports Park and had already sealed the deal with the fastest lap time in the Nurburgring back in 2008. Now the car is preparing to start an intense attack across the country to stake claim as the fastest production car on as much legendary courses as possible.

The tour is called the Viper Record Tour ’11 and features stops at the Monticello Motor Club, Sebring International Raceway, New Jersey Motorsports Park, and even the Nürburgring Nordschleife where Dodge hopes it will break the Viper’s own 7:22.1 lap time.

The driver for the tour has yet to be announced, but rumors are suggesting that Kumo Wittmer — the driver who set the production car lap record at Miller Motorsports Park with an ACR - will be one of the drivers sitting behind the wheel.

To say we’re excited about Chrysler’s plan of action would be an understatement, so stay tuned and hear all about the Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR’s success - or lack thereof!
