2013 Porsche 911/991 Turbo shows off its rear wing for the first time

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Just when we thought the next generation 911 would be set to the side until its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, our spy photographers were able to catch even more images of the future model. Better yet, we were able to get spy shots of the 911 Turbo that include that big rear wing, a feature that was vacant on the prototype captured in its winter and spring testing, but highly anticipated for the production model.

Aside from the elaborate rear wing, this new prototype features enormous air intakes placed against wide fenders, totaling up all the proof we need that this is the most powerful Porsche in the 911 line-up.

The 2013 Porsche 911 Turbo will be powered by a 3.8-liter flat-six engine that will deliver about 550 HP, a bit higher than the 530 HP found in the current 911 Turbo. Porsche will also offer both brake regeneration and stop start systems to help reduce fuel consumption by 12%. The new Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox will also be offered and with no less than seven forward gears, it combines the driving comfort of a converter automatic transmission with the dynamic gearshift of a sequential racing gearbox.

Expect to see the new generation 911 Turbo at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show March, with sales beginning later on in the year.

Video: Top Gear USA Season 2 trailer

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 08:00 AM PDT

The second season of Top Gear USA will air on Sunday, July 24th, so naturally the History Channel is already priming the crowd for its grand second season entrance with the show’s first trailer. After watching the almost two minute long video, it seems as though Top Gear USA may have all of its kinks ironed out - even if Adam Ferrara is still part of the trio.

Along with comedian, Adam Ferrara, Top gear USA welcomes back professional racing driver, Tanner Foust and automotive and racing analyst, Rutledge Wood. This first trailer shows the three of them driving classic cars and has a bit of an 80s theme running through it. It was pretty cool, but we would have rather seen actual footage from the second season. Guess they’re saving that stuff for the next trailer.

Enjoy the video and let us know what do you think: will the new season be better than the previous one?

Porsche 911 Turbo

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT

The new generation Porsche 911 (991) is scheduled to grace us with its presence at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September in its Carrera and Carrera Cabrio bodystyles. We’ve seen plenty of spy shots illustrating the details on each of these variants, but new spy shots have uncovered the higher performance version - the 911 Turbo - which should be making its world debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March.

For the new generation 911 Turbo, Porsche is cranking things up with a sportier appearance, coupe-like proportions, and reduced overhangs. The large air intakes situated on the flanks of the 911 Turbo will rush cool air into the 3.8-liter flat-six engine pumping out about 550 HP. This engine will be combined with Porsche’s newest technologies, including brake regeneration and stop start systems which will help reduce fuel consumption by about 12%. The engine will be offered with an improved manual gearbox as standard, or an optional Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox. The PDK will have with no less than seven forward gears, combining the driving comfort of a converter automatic transmission with the dynamic gearshift of a sequential racing gearbox.

The new generation Porsche 911 Turbo will go on sale later in 2012.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Posted: 13 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Leaving the other debuts of the Chicago Auto Show in the dust is the brand-spanking new Camaro ZL1 - the most powerful Camaro ever. This beautiful beast is powered by a LSA 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine that produces an estimated 550 HP and 550 lb.-ft. of torque which is just enough to get our hearts racing and our fingers twitching to grab the wheel.

"Camaro ZL1 is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously," said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "It's the most technically advanced Camaro ever, so we've chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history."

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be distinguished by a new front fascia, hood with air extractors, and a signature center section constructed of carbon fiber rendered in satin black finish. Completing the look is a set of 20-inch wheels and exhaust tips with ZL1 badge on the grille, hood, and brake calipers.

UPDATE 06/13/2011: It’s been a few months after the Camaro ZL1’s official debut and Camaro5 is now offering new details on the most powerful Camaro ever. Apparently, the ZL1 will not only be offered with an automatic transmission, but also with the Performance Traction Management from the ZR1. In addition to this tidbit, it seems that the estimated "550 HP" is also not correct, as Al Oppenheiser has confirmed that the output will be higher than the 550 of the CTS-V. Production will begin in the first quarter of 2012.

Ford Mustang 'Vanquishd' by Western Motorsports

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT

Muscle cars seem to be prime targets for some serious tuning upgrades. Whether it’s because of loyalty to speed or to the vehicles’ history, these cars have received all kinds of modifications to boost their performance or their muscular stance. Western Motorsports knows a thing or two about these types of developments, focusing on performance parts for Ford vehicles. They even released a Ford Mustang ’Vanquishd’ in 2006 at the SEMA Show which took advantage of Ford’s most exotic engine built for Aston Martin: the 6.0 liter V12 found in the Aston Martin V12 Vanguish. That specific vehicle is now on sale for a price of $79,900.

The price tag may scare a few people off, but before anyone goes running in the opposite direction, be aware that this particular Mustang now boasts of a full 600 HP as found in the 6.0 liter V12 engine from the Vanquish. This engine is mated to a 6 speed manual Tremec T-56 transmission, custom 6-2-1 headers with Magnaflow 3" exhaust, and a special set of Baer Extreme 14" 6 piston brakes. The car also gets new KW Suspension coilovers for the front and rear.

Next to the new technical additions, Western Motorsports also hooked the Mustang up with a BASF R-M Carrizma Candy Blue paint job and a classic design glassback roof, as well as a new set of iForged wheels size 19", equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Tires, 275/35ZR19 front and 345/30ZR19 rear. The interior gets Cobra Missano leather and Alcantra seats, an AiM Strada Dash and Datalogger, colecraft billet custom fender, and hood vents.

Porsche wants another sportscar between the 911 GT2 RS and 918 Spyder

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Something’s cooking in the Porsche headquarters and knowing these guys, it could only mean thing: a new car.

The buzz going on around Stuttgart is that Porsche is looking into introducing a new supercar, one that will sit between the 911 GT2 RS and the 918 Spyder. The rationale behind this idea is that the company wants a car that can bridge the price tag gap between the 911 GT2 RS, which retails for $338,500, and the 918 Spyder, which will sell for $1.1 million.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Porsche sales boss, Bernhard Maier, commented about the company looking into the idea of introducing a new Porsche supercar. "We’re currently examining what options can be derived from this gap in the product range," Maier said.

"Between the top 911 model and the 918 Spyder, there’s a price range that we’re not serving, but where other manufacturers are selling one or another product."

Just so we know what Porsche is getting into, the new 911 GT2 RS is powered by a 3.6 liter six-cylinder boxer engine that's boosted by two turbochargers, produces 620 horsepower with a 0 to 62 mph time of just 3.5 seconds, a top speed of 205 mph, and an impressive Nurburgring lap time of seven minutes and 18 seconds. Meanwhile, the 918 Spyder is powered by a V8 engine that produces more than 500 horsepower and three electric motors with an overall output of 218 horsepower. The numbers translate to a 0-60 mph time of just 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 198 mph and a Nurburgring lap time of under 7:30.

Camaro Superfest 2011 brings a surprising color palette for the ZL1

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 02:00 PM PDT

Camaro Superfest is the longest running all-Camaro event in the USA. A couple of weekends ago, this event took place in Riverside Park, Ypsilanti, Michigan, providing visitors of the show a chance to see the first and second non-red Camaro ZL1: one was white and the other was yellow (the Bumblebee star from the latest Transformers movie). The white ZL1 is also the first model to featire an automatic transmission (usually the ZL1 is offered with a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission).

The Camaro ZL1 is powered by a LSA 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine that produces an estimated 550 HP and 550 lb.-ft. of torque. The model will be distinguished by a new front fascia, hood with air extractors, and a signature center section constructed of carbon fiber rendered in satin black finish.

This year the Camaro Superfest hit its 20th anniversary and was held from July 1st to July 3rd, 2011. This is an event where the attendees must drive a Camaro, no matter the year.

Rumor: Hyundai working on Corvette Z06 rival

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 01:00 PM PDT

The automotive industry has been sprinkled with a number of supercars from rather unlikely countries in the recent months. Samplings from Sweden, Denmark,Spain, and even Poland are popping up to give the major supercar manufacturers a run for their money. Now, it’s rumored that we may be adding Hyundai to the mix as well. The South Korean automaker is rumored to be working on a new supercar that will take on models like the Corvette Z06, the Nissan GT-R, and the Porsche 911.

If produced, the new model could be a sports coupe powered by the company’s new all-aluminum Tao 5.0-liter V8 engine. The choice for transmission is still up in the air, but due to the car’s excessive weight, it would be a rear wheel drive model. Since it will be placed above the Genesis R-Spec Coupe, expect the new supercar to deliver more than 429 HP and 376 lbs-ft of torque.

Hyundai’s new supercar will deliver the same luxury options as the Equus sedan, including an iPad owners manual and pick-up and delivery service when the car needs servicing.

Of course, this is all just a rumor at this time. When asked about the future supercar, Hyundai CEO John Krafcik said there is no supercar in the works. In fact he replied, "No, no," and called the rumor "scurrilous nonsense." Anyone recall how many vehicles were born out of an outright denial?
