Car Infographics: NHTSA Vehicle Theft Prevention

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

No one wants to walk out of their front door in the morning and find that their car has been unexpectedly snatched up by someone else. Although it would be an amazing excuse to get out of work, you don’t want to deal with the hassle that follows. Unfortunately an estimated $64 Billion worth of vehicles are stolen every year and only 57% of those vehicles are recovered.

What makes these numbers worse is that about half of the vehicles stolen were taken due to driver error. All this means is that the vehicles were up for grabs due to the keys being left in the ignition or the doors being left unlocked. It’s a shame, but it happens. In fact, it happens even more often if you live in California, Florida, or Texas, which are the three top states for automotive theft. Break that down to the top ten cities for automotive theft and you’ll discover that California has six cities on it.

Bottomline: You may not be able to convince douchebags to not steal cars for a living, but you can at least take every necessary precaution to make sure you are not a victim. Get a car alarm, lock up your doors, and make sure you take the keys out of the ignition.

Check back with us soon to find more interesting tidbits as part of our Car Infographics series.

Singer 911 No.3

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 08:00 AM PDT

A few months ago, we showed you the magnificent Singer 911 that brought the classic designs of the Porsche 911 and combined them with a modern chassis and drivetrain. This combination produced a car that bridged the best of both worlds in one very, very unique package. Well, it turns out that there’s more where that came from.

Singer is back with a new Porsche 911 model and this time, they’re turning to British engineering firm, Cosworth, to prepare the new engine that can be found on the new Singer 911, affectionately called the ’No. 3’.

The third model takes the reins from its previous two incarnations - those models were dressed in green and orange - and comes with plenty of new-age materials to make the price tag skyrocket to six-figure proportions. Of course, all of it is justified once you realize all the elements inside this car.

Unfortunately, this particular model already has a very happy owner to go home too. One that, we can assure, paid a hefty price tag for the chance to own it.

Details on the Singer 911 No.3 after the jump.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST

The 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show allowed Subaru to unveil the Impreza Design Concept, a preview version of the next generation Impreza. Based on that concept, Jonsibal has imagined what the WRX STI version would look like and we say, if the production version looks anything like this, it will surely be a success.

The concept’s design is defined by a theme of "Dynamic, Enticing, Secure." Starting with this theme, the WRX STI version adds requisite fender flares, a top-mount intercooler, and, that massive wing on the back.

The standard Impreza is expected to be revealed in early 2011. It will continue offering the same 2.5 liter Boxer engine, but rumors are also circulating that a hybrid version will also be available, a first for Subaru. The WRX STI model will follow a few months later with sales beginning in early 2012.

The Car Show: Season 1 Episode 1

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT

We can’t say that we were looking forward to the premiere episode of The Car Show, simply because we didn’t feel that Adam Carolla was going to be all that funny. If he was, then The History Channel would have considered keeping him as part of the Top Gear USA trio. Turns out, we were absolutely wrong.

Adam Carolla may be a jumbling, mumbling mess at times, but his delivery actually makes him a bit funnier. It helps that he was teamed up with Dan Neil (automotive columnist for The Wall Street Journal), John Salley (4-time NBA Champion and actor), and Matt Farah (SmokingTire.com), who seemed to deliver more chemistry in the first episode of The Car Show than Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara, and Ruttledge Wood had in their entire first season. Don’t get us wrong, we actually like Top Gear USA, but we may like The Car Show even better so far.

Spy Shots: Audi S6 Avant spied testing with no camouflage

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Audi confirmed the arrival of the new S6 awhile ago with the car’s world debut date set for the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Now that the debut is only a few short months away, the S6 Avant is getting stripped of its camouflage and enduring some of its final testing. Our newest spy shots reveal every aspect of the new station wagon, minus the S6 badges, but what we’re really interested in is the upgraded engine underneath the sparkling exterior.

The 2012 Audi S6 will be powered by a newly developed 4.0 liter V8 engine with twin-turbos, allowing the wagon to deliver about 450 HP. Not only will the new engine deliver more power, but true to the times, it will also reduce fuel consumption and emissions by about 20%. The model will be offered with a Quattro four-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox fitted as standard.

After its world debut later this year, the Audi S6 Avant will go on sale - in both sedan and station wagon versions - at the beginning of 2012. If you live in the U.S. and don’t care for station wagons (which covers most Americans), don’t worry, the S6 Avant won’t be coming over here anyway.

Aston Martin V12 Zagato Racer

Posted: 29 Jun 2011 07:00 AM PDT

We haven’t even gotten around to digesting the full breadth of the Aston Martin V12 Zagato and we’re already getting a close look at the race-spec version of the new Aston supercar. Or at least something like it.

In preparation for the car’s racing debut at the Nurburgring later this week, Aston Martin gave the eager public a first-hand look at the race-spec version of the V12 Zagato. It might only be a rendering of the car, but at the very least, it gives us an idea on what to expect when the car officially makes its track debut on May 28, 2011 at the 53rd ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup VLN race.

Judging from the rendering, the race-spec V12 Zagato looks pretty much like the street-version with a couple of notable additions, including the prominent rear wing, the table-top front lip, and the black wheels.

That’s as much as Aston is willing to share for now. But at least the wait won’t be that long before we see the race-spec version in the flesh. Good timing too, considering that the 24 Hours of Nurburgring is scheduled for June 25 and 26, 2011 and Aston Martin will be fielding two V12 Zagatos in the annual endurance race.

UPDATE 05/31/2011: This past weekend the V12 Zagato Racer completed its first run under race conditions in the 53rd ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup VLN race at the Nürburgring. Naturally, the car experienced some minor issues, but the data obtained in the race will be used to tweak the vehicle just before the 24-hour race next month where two V12 Zagatos will be competing. Check out David King’s comments on the racer, as well as a video of the Zagato racer as it takes off on the track after the jump.

UPDATE 06/22/2011: Aston Martin will enter this weekend’s Nürburgring 24 hours race with two V12 Zagato Racers. The first is race car number 3, nicknamed 'Zag' (red) which will be piloted by Aston Martin CEO, Dr. Ulrich Bez. The second racer is a green V12 Zagato (nicknamed 'Zig') - car number 5 for the race - which was prepared by the small team based at Aston Martin's global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire. The ’Zig’ will be driven by One-77 Chief Engineer Chris Porritt. Check out the image gallery for the first images of the red ’Zag’. Enjoy!

UPDATE 06/29/2011: After making quite an impression at the Nürburgring 24 hour race last weekend, the V12 Zagato racer will make its British debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 1, 2011. Just another reason for us to add new high res images to the picture gallery! Enjoy!

Top Gear Season 17: Episode 3

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 03:00 AM PDT

The third episode of Top Gear was aired over the weekend and to our surprise, the show can actually put out a meaningful 60 minutes without all the usual wisecracks.

Granted, there were still jokes, but humor was somehow left in the sidelines in lieu of some pretty fascinating reviews on the McLaren MP4-12C and the Range Rover Evoque. On top of that, reigning Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel also stopped by for a quick chat with Jeremy Clarkson while also taking his talents behind the wheel of a Kia Cee’d as part of the Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car segment.

The two best segments though include the Stig’s scintillating lap of the MP4-12C, posting a lap time that you wouldn’t believe until you see it and a segment on second-hand cars that left us with an idea on the merits of owning a brand-new city car as opposed to a second-hand version of something that’s more appropriate to our tastes.

SSC Ultimate Aero II

Posted: 18 Nov 2010 01:00 PM PST

The battle for the title of "World’s Fastest Production car" has just heated up – again. And this time its round two of the classic David vs. Goliath encounter: diminutive Shelby Super Cars taking on the might of VW-owned Bugatti. American one man show SSC, forced the world to take them seriously after the original Ultimate Aero snatched the title away from the Veyron with a run of 256mph, recorded on a four-mile-long Texas single carriageway that featured a dogleg bend that needed to be navigated at "just" 210mph. The man at the wheel was 71 year old Chuck Bigelow who had no racing experience and refused to wear even a crash helmet.

Hitting back, the Veyron Super Sport took to VW's ultra-modern, ultra-smooth and wide Ehra Lessien test track, with a pro driver at the wheel and crowd of engineers at their beck and call. The result was an impressive 267mph from the 1200HP special edition.

Considering all that Bugatti have at their disposal compared to Jerod Shelby and his band of 16 engineers – that work from a garage behind his house – you begin to realize the magnitude of their accomplishments. Now they have unveiled their new creation, a 1350HP RWD beast that's yet to be officially named. For convenience, we'll just call it the Aero II.

Full story after the jump.

Bentley Continental GTC Speed

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 02:00 PM PDT

Bentley unveiled the facelift version of the Continental GT towards the end of 2010, so the next logical step was to refresh their Continental GTC Speed as well. The Speed model is still based on the original Continental GT that was launched in 2003, but has been given updates to make it look fresh and new.

After being spied during some brake testing in the European Alps only two weeks ago, the Bentley GTC Speed has been caught yet again, this time at the Nürburgring race track during some hi-speed testing. This prototype revealed an aggressive front fascia, a vented hood, and new headlights. The back of the Bentley also got tweaked with the addition of a trunk-mounted spoiler, slimmer taillights, and a revised exhaust system.

As with the previous models, don’t expect to see any big changes under the hood. A twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 engine will be residing at the heart of this beast with an output bigger than the current 600 HP. That power will be transferred through an all wheel drive system and transformed into a 0-60 mph sprint time of under 4.5 seconds. Since the future GTC Speed will be lighter than the current model, we expect greater fuel efficiency as well.

Expect the facelift GTC Speed to debut by the end of 2011, with sales beginning in early 2012.

Audi S5 Convertible

Posted: 13 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT

After being introduced into the market back in 2007, the Audi A5 line-up is entering the 2012 model year with new, advanced technologies and an updated design. These type of mid-cycle refreshes are to be expected, but the one modified feature that brought some minor confusion to the automotive world is the downgraded engine found under the hood.

The previous Audi S5 came packing a 4.2 liter V8 engine that cranked out 354 HP, but the 2012 model will only get a supercharged 3.0 liter TFSI engine with a total output of 333 HP. This may leave a few people shaking their heads, but greener is leaner and this new engine will provide an improved fuel consumption of about 20% (getting it to 29.04 US mpg). If the environmental aspect isn’t enough, then rest assured that the 2012 Audi S5 Convertible will still deliver impressive performance numbers.
